Today began my week three on the Shrink Yourself website. I own the book
but could never seem to do any of the exercises....although it was life-changing
to see that the core belief (according to Dr Gould) of binge eaters is that they feel POWERLESS. That was news to me and so much more helpful for me to get my head around than the usual diet and exercise books that never seem to know what I am going through, as a binge eater.

I highly recommend the program. At first I was very reluctant to spend the $40 each month for three months, but then I thought about how much money I spend in binge foods, and the price was less to take the course.

Hi Rogue, I did the Shrink Yourself program online for a month, I've also read Dr. Gould's book. Loved the book and it's great for referencing.

I too didn't want to give up my sugar and favorite foods because I didn't want to feel deprived. I've been able to do this but not a 100% though better than before. I tell myself that I can have it in moderation so I keep a little something on hand and remind myself nothing is off limits. So far I haven't binged with the food in the house.
Hope this helps,
Gayle

I have been waiting for my "Shrink Yourself" book to arrive. I ordered it. I think something did not go through. I had a note that there was fraud on my credit card. I took care of that and they sent me a new card. But I think maybe the book was purchased with the bad card.

Could anything else go wrong. I am having a real string of glitches!!! emoticon emoticon

Dr. Gould's on line program is well worth the small amount of money, from what MANY others have said. I didn't do it, but I have loved the book. Emotional eating hasn't been a big issue for me, but I did love his book.

Setback. I was one lb. from a new 10 lb. mark. I figured any daynow I would getbelow that weight. Alas, going back to work has messed up my weight loss success. I know I can get the weight off pretty fast but I was looking forward to a noticeable success point. Tomorrow starts week 4 on shrinkyourself online. I hope week 4 has some kind of lesson that hits my problem. I have not yet hired a person to tidy up the house before I get home (tired and a bit angry from 4 years of ongoing caregiving). I hope I can find the phone number today for that person. Shrinkyourself gave me a good plan for reducing my daily stress but I have not done what needs to be done yet. Chris shrinkyourself.com

Week 3 ending soon. But it did not go as well as the first 2 weeks. Back to teaching is tiring and I missed the pool a couple of times. The pool workouts have made me noticeably stronger. At school there is a hill to walk from my car to the building. Yesterday I actually forgot I was walking up that hill !! Before I always struggled, breathing hard, and feeling winded.
emoticon emoticon So I gotta keep up with water aerobics no matter what. I ordered meal-on-wheels again but just on my pool days. Then I don't have to come home first to give him his dinner, Chris

Hi--again! I was hoping there would be more people using the online program-or thinking about it--or used it in the past...

It is the best thing I have ever found. I just did Week 3 guided lesson. I also used the Hunger Coach to the end.

Now if I have a craving I can use the Hunger Coach and pinpoint my trigger. It is very satisfying to enter the reason for my frustration. I used to think it was just exhaustion and me needing comforting. the Hunger Coach took it a step further and told me there is an underlying frustration there--something that is making me feel the only solution is to eat and feel better instantly. The underlying frustration probably came from a certain event like my boss giving me extra work that overwhelms me or s person I work with demanding I do something for them when I have "enough on my plate" already. So I stuff my face to push down that frustration. Eventually I get sleepy and numb and zone out. OK for a short time but sure adds to my problems (gain more weight) instead of actually solving a problem.

Chris

Hi! emoticon
I am near the end of week 2. I loved week 1. I actually felt hungry , decided it was physical hungry, ate something healthy and became satisfied! It was like a miracle. I figure if I experienced that a few times, I can do it more. This week has been harder because I have much more pressure and much less time. I am back teaching after the summer. I know I eat to numb myself. When I am tired and uncomfortable, eating is pleasurable. It is very hard for me to not eat at such times. I am at least trying to eat healthy things, though cheese tempts me and creamy sweet things. thank you all for being here and sharing your experiences. Chris

Good to see you again Rogue emoticon I would agree about deprivation- if there is something you LOVE there is a way to fit it in. I eat chocolate every day. I make sure it's good chocolate (Dark Dove Promise is my stand by) and I only eat it when I can savor and enjoy it. I focus more on what foods I can eat to make me healthy (what I can do) rather than focusing on things I can't have (like a chocolate bunny every hour!) It isn't always perfect but the thoughts defintely help.

Hi Rogue.

I'm starting Week 4 tomorrow. Love the program, it's just clicked with me. I don't know that I have the answers to your question but what I think about deprivation is once you decide you can eat anything you want, as long as you are physically hungry, until you are full (mindful eating), you'll never feel deprived again. And once you're not eating everything in sight because you have to get it in NOW, before you "start" dieting again, the binges seem to end. At least that's how it's been for me. Hope this helps.

I lost 70+lbs...and now the hard part, maintaining!

Hi everyone. I'm in week 5 of the online program. So far, I haven't consistently applied the principles but I'm getting a lot of insight from it. I've identified some "Sore Spots" and lots of "Catastrophic Thinking." I'm trying to figure out why I feel like I "need" to overeat (or why I feel powerless over food). There's this very strong feeling I have that I don't want to give up my sweet and fattening foods. Maybe it's deprivation? I'm not sure. Any insight? What does Dr. Gould say about "convincing ourselves" that we're deprived if we give up junk?
