I've been a Sparker for 2 years so I know what Sparks is about and I won't buy the book. I have never been able to stay on the "Spark" Diet since I can't afford to spend money like that for such a menu. But, I do hope that "SparkGuy" really DOES get to talk about SparkPeople and be on some shows, as I've been so disappointed that others who appear on shows like ELLEN never get to mention Sparks but in passing.

After seeing a page display here on SP yesterday about the book, I will NOT buy it. It's a Diet book packaged as a non-diet. It comes complete with a 28 Day plan plus tips and rules from ppl who have lost a lot of weight.

According to stats, 97% of ppl gain the weight back within 5 years of losing the last of it. Most of the "success stories" haven't reached that 5 year marker yet.... Perhaps I am being a little negative, but I don't need to know what these ppl did; I did it too for over 2 years. Low calorie, lots of exercise, and self control are what they're stories breakdown to. I talked with a lot of those ppl when I was a member here before; I did what they did and it got me no where. I lost weight, but I was a shell of a person.

No diets for me and I will no support any materials that disguise themselves as common sense, when they are promoting actual dieting practices.

The "buying-a-diet-book diet" - love it! I read The End OF Overeating this summer and found it to be a nice compliment to Shrink Yourself. One helps to understand the physiological reasons behind overeating, the other the emotional. I agree, whatever helps in putting theory into practice - books, videos, journaling - is time well spent!

I'm on a buying-a-diet-book diet. I'm reading The End of Overeating now, borrowed from the library. The information on how much more food these days is designed to overcome the body's natural eating cutoff programs is enlightening and frightening, but it all boils down to how we are wired to have them make us feel better--in the short run. The last part of it is on treatment and mirrors a lot of Shrink Yourself principles and some from Judith Beck and Reinhard Engels, who are my favorite authors besides Gould. Just got to keep looking for whatever will help us put theory into practice more often than not.

Well, here's my take on it...

I'm not getting the sense that the revenue from the book will directly support Sparkpeople (and if anyone knows otherwise, please feel free to correct me). So I wouldn't order it just to support SparkPeople.

That said, I would be curious to know what is covered in the book, and even more interested to see the general reaction when the book comes out in January. I hope Sparkpeople is planning to upgrade the servers this site runs on because I suspect we're going to be flooded with new members!

NEED the book? - Probably not. INTERESTED in the book? - Most definitely!

I am seeing all sorts of ads for the new Spark! book offered by Spark People. Don't get me wrong- I love Spark People it has done wonders for me. But do I need this book? I have the program down pretty well and I know I am an emotional eater (does this book cover that topic like Shrink Yourself does? I doubt it) However I want to support SP and you get all sorts of free bits if you order it including 1000 Spark Points. So am I thinking of buying it for all the wrong reasons?
