Jibbie,

You've told us this before but good timinig in mentioning it again - just last night I was thinking about this same concept - I just LOVE chips and dip and last night I about toasted off an entire bag and container of both while innocently watching a TV show. This was different from when I normally have a binge, in this case I just was completely unaware of how much I was eating because I was enjoying it so much. I started thinking back to how chips and dip were a mainstay in my childhood. I can remember many nights of watching some TV show I enjoyed and nibbling on chips and dip - so maybe those foods are comforting to me in some way that links to my childhood. It's weird because I am one of those folks who doesn't remember anything from childhood, or remembers very little but I do remember the chips and dip and a few other food things!

It doesn't take a WHOLE childhood to be terrible, but a couple of LASTING events can really leave scars.
I've probably told you about my LOVE of COKE, and that came from a HAPPY memory, because my father would reward me and my brother by taking us into the tavern with him after he got his "business" done in town, and we'd get a COKE and chips for "being good." He'd talk to the local men, and laugh and someone would give me quarters to play the JUKEBOX and it would be air-conditioned in there in the hot summer and "so grown-up".
I drank COKE as my COMFORT food for years, once I was an adult and could buy it for myself. I know that it connects me to my father, and a wonderful time BUT, it isn't healthy and I gave up drinking it last year.

SO, not all COMFORT food comes from just BAD memories.

I agree, Jibbie. Until I read the book, I didn't realize how much those childhood memories bothered me. Funny thing is, now they'll pop up and I face them and while painful, much healthier than laughing about them, cracking a joke about dysFUNctionality and running to the fridge to "celebrate" that "fun." But the past IS ashes and I am adult enough to move forward and take responsibilty for not facing what bothered me in the past but now confronting it head on. Geez--I sound like I had a terrible childhood--I didn't, really! LOL

I read a Sparkers blog who has been having a lot of trouble with emotional eating. I told her about ROGER GOULD, M.D. and "SHRINK YOURSELF". She is working on "peeling away layers." Our childhood memories can be so painful, but it is best to BRING THEM OUT INTO THE LIGHT and face them. They are so much more fearsome in the dark.
Take time to tell others about "SHRINK YOURSELF." I haven't found a SPARKER yet, that wouldn't benefit from reading the book.

Still behind Jibbie - but I was thinking about your index card idea. I have highlighted lots of stuff in the book - maybe I could put some of that on cards to carry in my purse....something to think about

I read the book at night before I go to bed, and use my PINK MARKER to high-light things I want to remember. I know I will read it over and over again, because this is a struggle. Don't let "HARRIET" beat you up about how much reading you are doing.
I've written some of the passages on 3x5 cards, so I can quickly review them. My dd, Maggie is writing her 4,000 word "Extended Essay" for school as she will be a high school Senior. She has note cards, and I decided to use some, too, since I'm "studying" the book. emoticon

It has been weeks since I've had time to get back to the book, or at least it seems like weeks. Once I got to the 2nd part (the exercises) I realized I needed some chunks of time to really absorb and practice what was to be shared and I just didn't have it so my response was more or less, just to put the book away for a bit, plus I seemed to be having such an easier time with food it was easy to feel like things were under control again. This past week has just been rough. I have realized I need to revisit and get back to reading so I can fortify myself again! So, over the weekend I am making it my goal to read something in the book, make some kind of progress!
