Tonight, I was thinking about noshing even after a satisfying dinner. Instead, I made sure the food was put away and I folded clean clothes. Then I pulled out some winter clothes (long sleeved tops and fleece pants) to try them on and realized I need to put away some summer stuff to make room (although in SoCal, we sometimes need both for a long time). The urge passed and I can't believe how content and full I still feel two hours later. Time to go to bed. emoticon

Hi Susan, thanks for taking the time to respond.
And it makes sense that in order to lose weight, one has to restrict calories. I am not there yet, just started my 3rd week of SY online.
I am encouraged when i read the forums. And i might think that i am not so compulsive in my overeating. It is a beginning.

I do other methods as well, although I give SY credit as the thing that really changed me the most, the one thing I would not have been so successful without. I did the online program and have been very active in the forum there for over two years.

Some of the other things that have helped me:

I previously lost weight tracking my nutrition with Dietpower (www.dietpower.com for a free trial). However, before SY, after I got to my goal weight I quit using Dietpower and gained it all back and then some. This time around, I still use Dietpower, but I try extra hard to make this a permanent lifestyle of calorie restriction, not dieting. (Calorie restriction is a minor cut in calories- like 10-20% less than the average for your age, which is done as a lifestyle to slow aging, not just until a weight loss goal is achieved.)

I read and follow some of the principles from "The Gabriel Method", including particularly trying to eat raw, live food (like fresh fruits, veggies, and sprouts) at every meal and supplement with Omega 3 essential fatty acides.

I read and follow some of the guidelines from "Mindless Eating", including setting "food policies" of not eating when watching TV, driving, working, or doing anything else. While watching TV or at the movies I sip water.

I use self hypnosis, particularly Darcy Buehler's "Think Yourself Thin" and Paul McKenna's "You Can Be Slim."

I read "The China Study" and have gone more "flexitarian"--- many of my meals are whole foods, plant based, with some of my meals having a little bit of meat. I don't have "allowed" and "not allowed" foods, but I try to eat primariy whole, raw fruits and veggies, beans, and greens.

I think of myself as a "nutritarian"--although I don't fully follow Dr. Fuhrman (the originator of this term). I try to eat the most nutrient dense foods possible and avoid processed and junk foods.

Hi Susan,
thanks for your encouragement!
i realize that you have been very steady and successful; is it due only to SY, or did you follow other methods as well? (i hesitate to use the word diet)
Have a good day,

Rachel,

That sounds like great progress, pausing and making a rational plan about the treats you bought, instead of just totally treating it like it's bad.

Hi there,

i am on week 2 of Shrink Yourself. It is really helping.

Last sunday night i felt the urge to "treat" myself.
So i did buy all sorts of goodies.
BUT when i got home i realized that i did not want to binge but i did want to have something nice to eat.

What i did, which is a first for me: i portionned everything and froze it, giving myself permission to have a taste of a treat, rather than feeling that i am sabotaging my progress.

Also, with the help of the program i am making more time for constructive behaviours (meditation, pilates, cleaning my place etc...)

I am quite happy to see a few names from SY.(hi Slenderella!)
To all, have a good successful day,
Rachel

This afternoon I did dishes and listened to a podcast about changing habits instead of snacking on the quesadilla I started to make. Much better preparation for the guests I'm having tonight. I'm just supplying the venue so I don't have to do food prep and yet I will get to enjoy great stuff. I have tons of yogurt and cottage cheese containers that our local recycling cannot accept saved up. I'm hoping to get guests to take the leftovers!

Go Rachel!!! What a hard thing to do, to cut off your taste-buds in the middle of what they thought was going to be a big treat, but wasn't. Unfortunately I did just the opposite this evening, but your post is an inspiring reminder that we have other choices. It's never compulsory to finish the donut. Especially if it isn't a very nice one!

Someone just offered me a donut. I LOVE donuts and this one was chocolate glazed. So I took it and figured I would just log it in my nutrional tracker. After the first bite I decided it didn't taste as good as the chocolate glazed donut in my head. I took another bit (just to be sure!) after about 1/2 the donut I excused myself to get a book. I took the donut with me and hit it in the trash can- that's a change for me- hiding something in the trash rather than hiding food so I can eat it later! It's gone now and no one is the wiser that I didn't bother to finish.

Ooh La La, yes, I am remembering from Judith Beck (I now have her new book) that we need to "strengthen our resistance muscles" as much as possible. Giving in a little here and there only weakens that "muscle."

LOL, have fun w/ the bougainvillea...I am tangled in several loads of laundry this morning (on my own spring break!) I had just told my husband last night that the laundry also triggers the anxiety that leads to that powerful urge to eat. I'd rather eat than deal with it! So, I'm breathing and realizing that since I'm going nowhere this spring break, I can handle these mundane household tasks! I'm just thankful I have the time now.

Phyllis, I wanted to compliment you on the teeth-brushing, in addition to just plain ol' going to bed. I just went to the dentist last week, and believe me, brushing my teeth and flossing is going to end my eating a lot more often.

Rogue, finding a "place" to wait it out is an excellent strategy. It gives a person a chance to see that the beast's ferocity is just an illusion. The more of those experiences we can get under our belts to help offset so many of eating, the the stronger our "not-eating" response will be. I hope to remember your determination the next time I am in similar straits.

Today, one of my spring break days, I am jousting with a bougainvillea in my yard. I'm surprised by how much I can feel my heart rate go up trying to untangle long branches and prune some of them. I can't really count it as an "instead of" because I wasn't even thinking of eating when I started, but it is definitely helping me to "fast" until my next meal.

Well, last night "the beast" was hovering and tempting me like crazy. I went to a quiet, dark place and decided to BREATHE. I'm going to keep trying this distraction/coping technique. Sometimes the temptation is so powerful that my Harriet tells me that I don't care..I just want the food. I tried to ignore that last night. Went over on my calories, but did not binge.

Last night, I met a friend and we went to dinner and to see a play. Anyhow, when I got home it was about 10:30. I was tired, but I kind of wanted to eat something sweet. I did not have anything like that in the house. I might of eaten something else but instead I brushed my teeth and went to bed. It did not take long for me to fall asleep :)

You go girl! Next time you are at Super Target check out the Vitamuffin mix. It's pricey but the muffins are tasty, healthy and only 100 cals each!

Last night I went into a Target late to possibly get some plants for my garden and found myself wandering the food aisles. (The garden area was closed.) I talked myself into and out of chocolate chip cookie mix, a can of frosting, and a bar of dark chocolate. Then I bought a box of Fiber One cereal, went home, and watched The Dog Whisperer.

My husband asked if we could stop at the dairy on the way home from work for milk and I said, 'sure'. Little did I realize he also wanted to stop for an ice cream cone! When we got there he kept looking at the varieties. I first thought, 'hmm what chocolate do I want?' Then I thought, 'I've had my sweets today, no need to have more, I'm not even hungry!'. I watched him eat a 'birthday cake' ice cream cone (I took a nibble it was GROSS- I hate buttercreme frosting and that is what it tasted like) and then I came home and made dinner. I was really proud of myself for thinking twice.

It's more what AM I doing instead of eating. I'm in the middle of cleaning instead of having dinner. I had a fabulous Greek lunch around 2 p.m. and am not a bit hungry.

I threw away a Girl Scout cookie! I opened a box of cookies for folks to take a cookie off my desk when visiting my office. I was down to 3 cookies yesterday. Today 2 of the 3 were taken. At the end of the day I looked at that last cookie and quickly dashed it in the trash!

Today I used food at an inappropriate time, but much less than I have. I'm not especially hungry now, but I've made an executive decision to eat a normal dinner. However, as an exercise in control, I went for a walk and am waiting for ten more minutes. I will watch TV while I stretch for those 10 minutes.

I'm writing now because I had a fine dinner with nice company, I just got home from a comedy club, and it would be so easy to go in the kitchen and eat leftovers or other food I have on hand. It's good stuff, but it doesn't matter how "healthy" it is (grapes, cabbage, collards, etc.) if it is feeding something that food can't fix. That is just reinforcing the habit. I'm trying now to think about how good I am going to feel when I wake up in the morning. I might be very hungry; so what! I'll eat! I'm also trying to imagine that being my normal behavior so that some day, I won't even be thinking about possibly eating and talking myself out of it. I'll just think about the other things in my life, like "normal" people do. There are millions of people for whom this is not a struggle; I'm going to be one of them.

I got up and did a few leg exercises. This inspired to put some music on and I danced for about 15 minutes. It was enough to get me to distract me and then I got online for awhile. By that time, I was ready for dinner!

Great job Wen! Too often we 'feed' our tiredness. Sometimes I tell myself when I think I'm hungry and I'm really tired to lie down for a few minutes and if I'm still hungry I can get up. My experience is usually the same as yours and then when I get up I'm not hungry. Glad you learned something about your body.

Last night I was crabby and tired so I got into bed at 6PM for an hour and ended up sleeping through the night!!! Guess I was figting off a cold or something! Today I feel MUCH better! Was feeling a bit nibbly so I made a cup of tea and had 1 oatmeal cookie with it. Feeling very victorious in general! Heard all about the highlights of the game but had zero superbowl munchie hangover to boot! yay!

Life is a gift! Tear into it!!!

Pat, I like your ideas. One of my favorite books is by Bill Bryson "A Short History of Nearly Everything." If you haven't read it, please do. It makes you realize how lucky we were to ever be born and be on this precious Earth. He is a secular writer.

Iris- I'm sorry to hear about your hand! That is pretty scary. It sounds like you are ok. I am so glad you didn't go out for the chocolate. It never is as wonderful as it seemed and I tend to beat myself up afterwards.

We put new flooring in the first floor of our house right before Xmas last year. It was so stressful and eating at home was difficult if not impossible. But it was 3 weeks of our lives not forever. I hope your remodeling is finished sometime soon.

This very cold weather makes me reach for the comfort food, big time! I've decided to look for other ways to comfort myself....a good book, watch an old movie and yes, even going to bed early for wonderful sleep!

Having a little cry and going to bed early sounds reasonable to me, for now! You did a great job!

Yesterday the remodel and the week got to us both, and we had a bad argument. By dinner-time I was starved, feeling no desire to eat any earlier in the day. I left and went for a drive, he did as well. We got out of each other's hair for hours - a good thing. We came to a place of resignation in the evening. I worked in the cramped space in one corner of my torn asunder kitchen, chopping vegetable on a plywood-covered workspace. Here's a bit of advice: Never chop vegetables when you are in grief and angry. Your mind isn't there. I slammed a big very sharp chopping knife down on my index finger and cut all the way through the nail. Talk about being startled out of your funk! Once I was able to pry my throbbing finger out of the towel I had shoved it into, my husband cleaned and bandaged me up. Afterwards, I finished dinner. Though I was full, all I could think of was, "I WANT something SWEET, I want CHOCOLATE!" There is no chocolate or decadence in the house. It saved me, and I was fine. I let myself cry from frustration, I went to bed early. Maybe its not the best answer, but it was better than numbing the day with an éclair.

Great job Oolala. Sometimes we have to focus on what we are dreading instead of eating to avoid. Right now I am dealing with some true challenges in my life and I am trying to face the unknown head on, rather than eating. Check out my latest blog for the details...

Well Done Lady Iris! There is a really good blog out today on SP Daily Spark about choices. It's that we loose our motivation but we chose the quick reward (chocolate) over the long reward (health). Take a look if you get a chance.

RACHEL, I'm so glad you weren't hurt. That sounds like a dreadful accident. It is terrific that you didn't fall into a big pile of food, because that would have been so easy to do -- you're amazing!

I went out for lunch with a pal yesterday, and we usually splurge. She's a mommy of a 14 month old, and naturally tiny, so she can afford it! I decided to not fret and just have a plan. We both ordered a low-fat soup from Panera & water to drink. Afterwards, instead of shopping, she mentioned going for a walk. I didn't even feel tempted when afterwards we stopped at Starbucks and she ate three little chocolate pastries. Its the first time I can recall NOT feeling deprived when someone else was eating a sweet. I just wanted to be so focused on my friend, our (too rare) conversation time, and my small skinny latte, that it just rolled by. When I got annoyed with my husband later, and hunger rolled on me, I just sat with it .. observed it, sipped water ... breathed some more, and then went to bed. That's HUGE for me. I think it was a good day.

Boy, you are right about SUGAR MUNCHIES leaving you feeling BAD the next day.

We watched a good movie tonight with CLINT EASTWOOD in "Grand Torino." It was really an interesting story, although I usually don't like him that much. (I remember him back in the FIST FULL OF DOLLARS days). He played a good character in this story of life changes.

I sure am happy you weren't seriously injured. Several years ago my sister hit a large deer near her house, since they live out in the country. She was late for an appointment that evening and driving down the country road much faster than usual. She didn't get hurt, but it wasn't good.

Today I am trying very hard not to emotionally eat. So far I have been successful and I'm pretty proud! This morning I killed a deer with my car. In my old pre Shrink Yourself pre knowing myself emotionally self I would have eaten everything in sight! Now I'm facing the fear, relief (no one was hurt) and frustration head on. You can read about it in my blog. So I wanted to stop in and say I'm not eating so I can encourage myself to stay that way!

I spoke with a friend who told me to come over for some dark chocolate covered peanut brittle (this is my idea of heaven) after dinner. I'm going to try and figure out what that would be in calories and add it to my tracker so I'm ready.

Tonight instead of eating I watched, 'Kung Fu Panda'. It's all about a Panda who is an emotional eater. It was actually inspiring... not as much as Shrink Yourself however.

Great job just going to bed. I tell myself to go to bed when I am tired but think i am hungry. Then, if I can't fall asleep I can go get a snack. Amazingly, when I get up in the morning I am not starving. Well done on the choice!

I realised that I was absolutely shattered, and went to bed early!!! Sounds trivial, but it's significant for me to do that and not to reach for the sugar to keep myself going for another couple of hours until my "regular" turning-in time... And I feel rested and ready for new busy day now, which I certainly wouldn't have done after an evening of sugar munchies. Yay!

I checked out a book from the library on learning sign language. That kept me busy during the "Danger Time" after dinner.

Today I went hiking with an out of town visitor, so that kept us busy. On Friday morning, I went and got bargains at some local thrift stores, but everything was in my car. I had taken it all out to clean it for my friend's visit, so put everything in two under-the-bed storage containers. Tonight I emptied them out and dealt with all the stuff in ; then I cleaned them. When they are dry, they will be ready for some summer clothes/shoes storage.

Yesterday, I didn't do anything instead of eating. I just ate. I had a party to go to in the evening and ate in celebration of that. Oh, well! I refuse to mourn it. I'll be fine today. I'm jumping back and forth between cleaning (out-of-town guest tomorrow) and posting. Will be dancing tonight, so I'll get my exercise.

Ah yes, I am dreaming thinking these holidays go as planned emoticon We are home with just the 5 of us. It's the immediate family. Most of my family is on the East Coast and no one is closer than 500 miles away. We did have fun though. Not much food left (as planned). Tomorrow is my anniversary, another eating day. I hope to get to the gym by 8 AM emoticon

I noticed last night that I was going to the cookie jar and KNEW, in that instance, that I was eating solely for an emotional reason (too many expectations, as always, and too much work getting the meal together) and I FORCED myself to immediately put them back. No excuses.
Food NEVER helps. I was so proud of myself!!!!

Today I woke up and went to the gym for a 90 minute 'fat blasting' class! That gives me the incentive not to blow it too much for Thanksgiving. I've already put my food allotment for tonight into my spark nutrition page. I hope everyone is enjoying time with friends and family. Happy Thanksgiving emoticon

I remembered the last time I had eaten on the way home instead of waiting and how I was sorry I hadn't waited--so, today I waited. And it was better.

Love to hear that SY is helping. Today I was so swamped at work with things I had procrastinated on that I found myself absorbed and didn't think about eating. Why, how normal!

Okay.........Yesterday was Halloween....after walking around with my son for over an hour we came home and had some candy. The big news is I stopped after about 6 pieces. Huge for me.......normally I would have eaten 3 times as much! I stopped and didn't feel deprived...AND I didn't beat myself up for indulging (I mean, it was Halloween after all!). Then I made sure to get plenty of exercise today. Yeah!

I don't have a particular success to post, but I didn't want the month to end without stopping in. I feel that I am moving toward more and more experiences of waiting until I am hungry to eat, which means I have had to spend time doing things instead of eating. One of them is just forcing myself to stay in my classroom after work without taking a break to go across the street to buy junk. Another is thinking about the nice dinner I am going to have as a way to convince myself not to get junk on the way home and spoil my appetite. Mmm, food tastes so good when I'm hungry!
