I so identify with you on the COKE issue. I just know that I am addicted to it. My grandmother, who I loved more than anyone in this world, and I would sit outside on her porch in the hot Texas heat and drink ice cold Coke from the small bottles. She passed away 29 years ago and many, many times when I think of her I still cry and can see us sitting and drinking our Cokes. I was only a happy child when I was with her. She made me feel so special and I have never had that again in my life until recently. I now have a 3/12 year old grandson that loves me more than anyone else. I know this because he tells me this all the time. So, now I absolutely MUST lose this weight in order to be here for him.

How did you quit drinking them? I drink at least 3 to 4 cans a day and some days I have drank 6 or more.

You don't really need the book if you've got the online info. It's working the program that makes things happen anyway. It's much easier to have things laid out on separate sheets of paper, or separate screens, if you keep up online.

But, for anyone reading this who has not taken the online course, you've got to know if you are a person who will be inclined to cooperate with the timeline. I hoped it would inspire me, but it didn't. I love Dr. Gould, and think the program is great, but taking the course didn't make me commit to the work. However, I'm not sorry I did it, either! But it also wasn't a financial burden for me. emoticon

I did the 12 week Online Program and do not plan to buy the book, but will utilize this SparkTeam and the print out of my 12 weeks of work to continue working on Harriet and my emotions. I am really enjoying Inside Out Weight Loss - thanks for the head's up! Renee has a great voice and pace in speaking. She asked me to take a moment and become Present in myself - before starting on moments dedicated to me - a guided visualization...just lovely Podcast.

I am 100% responsible for my life choices.

I would say start with the book, it's got all the information, it's cheaper, you can do it however is most comfortable for you incrementally, and if you feel the need for more you can always do the online program. I'm doing both. But I wish I would have spent more time with the book before I signed up for the online course. The course is good, but honestly-it's all in the book. And you can go back over stuff. As far as a support community...I don't think anything is better than Spark! Someone is always here, and everyone's got the same goal. Hope this helps...Cindy

CarolAnn: Welcome! I did the 4 day class online and enjoyed it (it's basically 4 days worth of articles to read that is almost same info as in beginning of book but a little differently put). I also did a free interactive session online and participated in a live teleclass via phone where Dr. Gould spoke on emotional eating. All of this, along with reading the book have been great. I am still mulling over doing the online program but will likely not do it (due to money) until after I've read the entire book and gotten as much as I can from that. If you do the 4 days of articles they will send you an email with a promotional code afterwards giving you $20 off if you pay for the whole 12 week program (so $100).

oolala, thanks for the sparkmail. I was going to ask if anyone had signed up for the online program. I am just at the harriet phase of the book and went to the website. Going to sign up for the free 4 day program then if you all recommend it I'll try the 40.00 pay as you go plan. God knows I've tried so many diets. I succeed for awhile and then sabotage my efforts with binge eating.

ohlala I am on the same week as you... I do have trouble making the time to go through the guided sessions because I have 2 kids and when they finally conk out for the night that is when I feel like conking out too. I am going to continue doing it though. I'm ready for session 4. I have found something else that is similar to this also ... it is Renee Steven's "Inside Out Weight loss." She has free podcasts to listen to on her website and it is very similar to Dr. Gould and Paul Mckenna.

I had a baby girl!!! now I have to get off the preg weight... I did it before with Sparks I can do it again! Thanks guys!

You are getting the benefit of "peeling the onion" so just do it slowly. Dr. Gould is so "on the money" with his points and insight. You can tell he has worked with patients for many years and knows what he is talking about on this subject.

I've now done the lessons for the first 3 weeks of the online program. I'm still not taking complete advantage of it because I'm not using the workbooks very often. I'm still not sorry I signed up, though. The lessons include some neat checklists that break down some of the skills needed to do something else instead of eating. Often before I can do something concrete in the world instead of eating, I have to do something to change the way I am thinking about something first. I guess I could just divert directly to another activity, but I don't think that would have the healing effect. I'll keep experimenting. However, having done the lesson yesterday didn't stop me from emotional eating last night-over a man, no less! A terrible reason, esp. because we haven't known each other long enough for him to merit that much influence. But, when I analyze it, I realize that he, just like several other men in my life previously, represented something to me that I think I need. It's common in romance for this to be true, but my spiritual practice and this work I believe demand that I peel the onion of this belief. And, the cure, as is so often true, and which is easy to say but often hard to do, is to come back to the present.

Oolala,

I was just thinking about you today and was going to Spark Mail you to find out how it is going. You must have been reading my mind!

Well, that's just like how paying a monthly fee to be a member of my gym does not make me go to it!! Standing in the garage does not make you a car, right? ;-)

It sounds like you know you are behind and you still are determined to carryon so maybe you can find some time today to get through Week 2 and then be fresh for Week 3?

I know you can do it - I can't wait to hear how it goes!!

Just to let anyone know who is interested: paying for the online program is not necessarily a motivating factor. I haven't done my second week of work and I think I'm eligible for week 3 tomorrow! Harriet isn't going down without a fight!

You have 12 weeks to finish all of the sessions... so a week each session. After the 12 weeks you "graduate" but you can choose to stay for more online support and reviewing for $9.95 a month or something like that. I almost wish it were daily instead of weekly because I feel like I need to be motivated daily... but Sparks does that for me. You can split your days up ... take the guided session one day, do the workbook the next day and then scope out the lesson discussions on the forum on the other days if you need to. I am happy with it so far but wish I knew that it would be recommended to read certain parts of the book while you do it. I'm getting the main ideas though without the book and the homework/workbook is very helpful.

I had a baby girl!!! now I have to get off the preg weight... I did it before with Sparks I can do it again! Thanks guys!

So, Puppycat, does the lesson expire or does the link to it stop working? Ugh, I need to actually finish the book. I just have not had time. I am going to take it on this trip to DC tomorrow and will likely have a few hours here and there of reading time on the drive.

ohlala I shelled out the $40 pay as you go... Last Thursday... you have a week to do the homework and the guided lessons... so that is 2 hours out of your week. Don't worry I'm sure you will find time and catch up. I like the guided sessions but I am a little disappointed at the end it says to read chapter 2 and I don't have the book. Crumb... I didn't know I had to invest in both. They should give a synopsis of that chapter after paying for the online course. I don't know when I would be able to get the book but I am getting a lot out of the information that is there so far.

Oolala,
If you are like me, I have to be in the right frame of mind and have a good amount of time to sit down and do a program like that. Don't feel pressured. do it when you are ready, surely there is not a time limit?

Oolala,
Let us know your thoughts on the online program. I am still reading the book but wondering about if my committment level would be higher with the online program. I read alot so I have multiple books going all the time (am in a book club too). I am having trouble focusing on this specific book. I did get an email about a free teleclass on emotional eating with Dr. Gould which I signed up for (it's like a teleconference you dial into and listen). It is a long distance call but we have voice over IP phone at home so that is not extra for us.

I actually went ahead and took the deal on the online program. that was yesterday morning, and I haven't done the first lesson yet! But I will do it today or tomorrow. You are probably right about the fear factor. Isn't it funny, in a way? I mean, what can happen, really? I'm not going to get physically hurt. Oh, how much we want to avoid certain feelings, though they are so un-fatal!n Thanks, jibbie!

Oolala53, no one can do that for you, but you, so you have to look down inside yourself and face the FEAR and resolve to stay with it. I really think it is fear that would keep you from NOT being consistent. Change is fearful and looking at issues is upsetting. I've made myself read the book and I'm still working on it because I can't sit down and read straight through it, because it just gets too emotional. Even thinking about WONDERFUL times in my life, like Christmas Day 1959 when I was 10 years old, brought up a lot of feelings on how I missed being a child. But, I know the book has value, so I'm making myself do this.

If you do the free 4 day Emotional Eating 101 course online they will send you a promotion code after the last day to get $20 off the full program. I am struggling. The first week or two weeks I was reading the articles and then reading the book it was like I was under a magic spell. I was not as hungry, I was able to make good choices, resist bad choices and then this last week it was like a dam broke or something. Everyday I gave into some temptation to eat junk food of some sort - it was everywhere at work! I did not binge but I ate terribly all week.

I got an email a couple of days ago offering a discount on the online course. I keep wanting to think that I can do this just with the book and us, but I find that I don't keep up with it consistently. I'm afraid that I would do the same thing even after paying more online, but it might be just the thing to make me work through it a little more lockstep. but, I'm still on the fence.

I don't think the cost of the course is that much, but I don't need to do it over reading the book.
I do think it is worth the investment if you REALLY are dealing with emotional eating. My concern was NOT gaining back the weight again, and that is what got me into the book, because Dr. Gould said EMOTIONAL eating was the cause of diet failure. I don't want to FAIL this time and ever gain back the weight, but I know 95% of people do.
I think Dr. Gould is a very reputable man and his course is probably the best offered for the problem. You are smart to take it and give yourself the WEEKS to get through it and help yourself change habits.

I have the book and I marked in it with a Yellow Marker and wrote in it like a textbook, because to me it is just that. I was learning about myself. I haven't used the web site because I spend so much time here and on YouTube. I'm not a binge eater, never have been, but I was a problem COKE drinker and I quit it about a year ago. From the book, I could easily see that my love of drinking COKE was emotional, since as a child, my Father would take us into the tavern and buy us a Coke and chips. It was wonderful to be in the "adults' world" and in the hot summertime, it had A/C which was a big deal to me. My Father would laugh and talk to the local people and I loved seeing him so happy. So, COKE was much more than a soft drink.
I quit it, because my triglyceride level was 550 and it is down to 250 now, but needs to go lower.

I'm so glad that someone asked this question because I've been wondering about it too. I've only got the book, and it has occured to me that the online program might be better to do - at least it has the support forum. I started this group with the hope that we could build our own support forum - and I wouldn't ned to pay the extra money for the site! $10 a week works out to 80 South African Rands, which is a lot for me.

Hi,
The 12 week online course is $120. I think in American funds, but I'm not sure. Still, $10.00 a week is pretty reasonable, and so far I'm impressed with the course.

Hi,
I signed up a couple of days ago for the online course (I don't have the book), and I've completed the introduction and week one session. I still have work to do in the online workbook. It is quite a bit of effort, but I'm finding it very interesting so far.

FATLADYSINGING: I just ordered the book (due to Wendie's glowing reviews). I really would like to do the online program but my DH was not comfortable with the cost (yet). We agreed for me to try the book and then if I felt the online would continue my progress that I could do that. My book should be here by Monday and I am very eager to get started. I can relate to your comment about being out of control! Welcome!

Hi FLS

Shannon had a similar quesion so I dug up my response to her and pasted it here to save some time, hope ya don't mind! I think I saw on one of the other threads that Leslie just finished the 1st week of the online course so she may have some additional feedback for you...

"I purchased the book a few days ago (paperback version $14.00 at Barnes & Noble) and am loving it!
It is as if he wrote it specifically for me! The online program is great too- - it used to be called "Mastering Food". I actually purchased it about a year and a half ago but I never followed through with it. I just wasn't ready I guess. It calls for some deep delving into our selves - -our motiviations, our fears, our relationships. I kept telling myself I was too busy and let the assignments slip and pile up, but looking back I think I was doing an avoidance thing. I'd love to give it another go, but the book is in the budget and the online course is not. I do love being able to highlight and reread passages over and over again. It is working well for me. But I hope, once my situation improves, that I will be able to follow up with the interactive program. I think it is a lot of the same information, but the exercises are more complex and varied. And you have the option of purchasing actual live counselling sessions or specific email support as well. Either way, Dr. Gould really knows his stuff. I have read dozens of books and hundreds of articles on the subject and have purchased tapes, cds, hypnotism and biofeedback. But I have never heard it put quite so well and with such clarity. It is a simple program but it is not an easy one. Still, I am very excited about putting what I am learning into practice. Best of luck to you and let me know if you have any questions or need anything. I am pretty much an open book and am recording my experiences on my blog."
Wishing you the very best....

I just found dr gould's website and was wondering if you ladies use the book or online site and or which you prefer?

Has the book/program really helped you? I am debating on which to do/buy.

I am so out of control it is pathetic.
