Starting the month off right! Within calorie range 2 days. Had a can of energy drink on Sun. and a beer tonight. Sugar consumption is down the last couple days so I'm feeling pretty good.

Have been indulging in ice cream the last couple days and not within calorie range, but I'm doing it today. Had an energy drink but the rest of the day has been, and will be, good food. Determined to get it done!

I usually peel them and chop them up before I put them in the freezer. They don't turn brown unless you leave the peel on. I love using berries as well.

Can't imagine using frozen bananas for anything; don't they turn dark? I used a banana in a protein shake once and it was pretty disgusting. I do love to make protein shakes with blueberries or strawberries, though. Usually I use milk but with blueberries I can just use ice and it makes a pretty tasty treat.

Managed to come within calorie range the last 2 days. emoticon

Ice cream is my downfall too. I am wanting to switch to banana "ice cream" but my frozen bananas keep going into the smoothies.

ONE serving of ice cream!? You can do that?! emoticon I had ice cream last night on top of 3 beers and 2 slices of pizza and I think I probably had 3 servings.
However, today I not only came within calorie range, I was able to stay away from the beer and Coke in the fridge. Red letter day!

Good Morning everyone emoticon I managed to cut way back on the sugar yesterday. I wish I could say I did not have any at all, but I did have a Fiber One Chocolate Brownie with some organic peanut butter (just peanuts and salt) on it for dessert last night. Today my goal is to only have sugars that are in foods naturally, like fruits and veggies. emoticon

emoticon Hope everyone had a great weekend! We stayed home and got quite a bit accomplished. We moved a month ago and are still unpacking and settling in. It has finally warmed up so we're getting flowers and garden planted and the outside spruced up a bit. This place has a nice lawn area, but not a nice lawn so that will be our project this summer; just keeping the weeds mowed and encouraging what little grass there is to grow.

Oh...years, maybe. emoticon I'm not willing to cut it completely, but have really been working on cutting back for a year anyway.
I started noticing how is affects me (fatigue, trouble breathing, etc.) and just decided that I need to cut back. I stay away from the obvious sources, like candy and pop, and just try to limit other sources, like bread.

Yeah, you really need to watch that. I'm reading a book called 'Salt, Sugar, Fat' that talks about all the sugar in breakfast cereal. Quite an eye-opener! Some of them contain are over 50% sugar.

I've been way off, too. Getting back tomorrow. I'm going to stay off the energy drink for the next couple days and I have my supper planned. That's really what's hurting me right now. I've changed jobs and am driving an hour to and from work, getting home at 7 pm. Not a good time to try to decide what to have for supper. So tomorrow I'm going to have a chocolate protein shake with milk and munch on carrot sticks; that will take care of the urge to snack and the sweet cravings, too.
Wish me luck! emoticon

I definitely need to work on asking myself that before I eat. I talk myself into eating just that one bite, then that sets off the eating for the day. If I would just talk myself out of that one bite....

Ha! I love that phrase "eater's remorse", I think I now have a name for how I feel too often. Too often I ask myself "Why did I just eat that?" I am learning to ask why I want to eat something BEFORE I eat it

Thanks for the tips.....

I think I suffer from "eater's remorse" which is similar to buyer's remorse. lol The only problem is that when I eat without analyzing whether it is worth the extra calories, I can't return the calories later.

Hi there! emoticon to the team! There's a couple different ways that I've handled those kinds of situations. The first is to just go ahead and have a piece of cake, but ONLY one, if it's something that you hardly ever have and really like. You can usually fit one piece into your calorie range on any given day if you're really careful the rest of the day. Doing that may involve staying out of the chips and other muchies, though.
I've also found that I can say 'no' to the first piece (cookie, doughnut, etc.) but not the follow up. If it's something that I have available on a regular basis anyway, I can pass. And, if I am really honest, I can assess the treat and decide whether it really looks that good. Many times in the past I've indulged in something that really didn't look all that good in the first place, but I just wanted something to eat.

Take a step back and ask yourself why you want this (fill in the blank). You may decide in the end that it's really not worth it.

Good morning. I am new to this team. I joined because I really have a problem turning down sweets.

Yesterday, we had a cookout for our granddaughter's birthday. The temp was in the teens so needless to say, we ate inside. I made a pound cake with caramel sauce. There was also chips/dip and bratwurst. Again, I didn't hold myself back from eating that piece of cake, and I also had chips and dip. Any suggestions, on how to handle this in the future?

Nothing like a good 'housecleaning' to get you back on track, huh? emoticon Having a little trouble in that area. Came down with a sore throat last week and have been soothing it with Coke. Drank the last one tonight and thinking I won't be getting anymore.

I've discovered Jessica Smith's workouts and have been enjoying her ab routines.

I hope every one is settling in to their routines and focusing on their goals. I have come to realize that negative thoughts really do a number on me and need to find positive things to think about.

I overate yesterday, but seem to be back on track (but that's because I ate all the treats in the house).

Started my training for the half marathon that will be in April.

Have a great week!

Pies are gone so I guess it's time to cut the sugar a little more. I've been off bread and pasta since Wed. but it's not helping; maybe another week without it and cut the sugar too. I think I made up for the missing bread with an over abundance of sugar.

Here's to a healthy new year!

Starting to detox: I made fudge and cookies last weekend and they are all given away or eaten so now I'm detoxing. I had a little ice cream this evening but that's all the sugar I've had today. Tomorrow will be harder; I'm off work and we're going to finish up our shopping. Hoping to eat at Subway; wanting to try their new pastrami sub.

Hi Vicky! Welcome.
I'm sorry you're dealing with these tough circumstances.
Have you tried giving up sugar before? It could be that what works for me will not work for you and we all need to find our own way. But what helped me was to use fruit (pieces of apple and pear, for example) and raisins to replace sugar, for example in my yoghurt that I had for breakfast and sometimes for dessert.
If you have questions please post them, I'll do my best to answer!

Christina

Well, I've come within range 2 days but I'm stuck at home today. We were going shopping and to take my sis out for dinner for her BD, but we're experiencing blizzard conditions right now. It's been snowing since yesterday morning and the wind is blowing about 20 mph. Oh well, guess I'll have to work on some cross stitch or quilting projects to keep myself out of the kitchen.

emoticon Jessica! emoticon to the team!
A couple things that may help the sugar cravings after a meal are fruit (like an apple to clean your palate) or chewing gum. Fruit has enough sugar in it to sometimes satisfy the craving for sugar. Brushing your teeth, if possible, helps sometimes, too.
As far as sticking to a diet, I did really well in the beginning following Spark's quick start program. Going forward, I like to make sure I get at least 3 - 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day and TRACK, TRACK, TRACK! I've found that I just can't eat right unless I track what I'm eating. I think I just need to see it in writing to know that I'm on track.

Hi Jessica, welcome!
I think it is important to realize that not eating sugar (and eating clean in general) becomes (much) easier after the first few days. So if you can manage to get through the first say, 5 days without eating sugar (and hopefully, eating lots of vegetables) you will notice that the cravings become less, and when you do have them they become easier to resist!

This is my first time posting so please let me know if I am doing it wrong :)

I tend to have a lack of discipline and when I start a new health streak I end up giving up after just a day or so. I blame it mostly on cravings, and the need to want to eat sweets after every meal. I am posting to ask for advice on how to cut the cravings and stick to an eating plan. My body thinks I'm hungry even when I just ate (like belly growling kinda hungry). It's crazy and I get so discouraged.

I did the visalus shakes for breakfast and lunch a couple months ago and went from 150 to 141 where I seem to be stuck! Any advice?

Well, the beast was running wild again today! Had a very bad day nutritionally; I'm glad there was no pop in the house and nothing open in town. I did manage to refuse the energy drink that we've got tucked in a cupboard. I keep it there rather than in the fridge so it's not as handy. I'm not sure why the cravings are so bad all of a sudden; I've never had a stretch this long. Hope I get together soon.

Well, I got to work today determined to kick the sugar and who should appear at the door but the sales rep who always brings doughnuts! emoticon I hate it when that happens! I did manage to stay out of them but had a couple bite sized candy bars and a couple pieces of hard candy when I got home. I'm calling it a win!

Oh my! I'm right there with you! This constant eating has got to stop. I'm going to make a list of things to do whenever I head to the kitchen.

Read (I'm trying to brush up on the accounting to prepare for a new job)
Organize (My spare rooms are a wreck!)
Cross-stitch (I'm working on Christmas gifts)
Exercise!!!

I MUST dial the sugar back!!! Ive been out of control for months...last weekend I ate a whole box of swiss miss rolls in less than 24 hours...that's 12 cakes emoticon
Halloween candy....ice cream...cookies...donuts...I can eat all of this in 1 day. I finally forced myself onto the scale this morning and found Ive gained 12lbs!!!!!! I am mortified. Even though Ive seen whats happening in the mirror and my clothes...seeing those pounds on the scale made me sick. I cannot let this get worse...I must gain control...and I know the #1 culprit for me is sugar.

God help me find the strength to just say no this week and start getting the sugar out of my body. Im afraid its going to be a very long week...

Has your fatigue lessened at all since going off sugar? Mine usually does, as well as the achiness. Right now I'm experiencing both due to giving in to the sugar cravings. I hit the pop machine a lot while we were at the hospital and have been digging into the cookies at home and the leftover Halloween candy at work. I'm working on getting it together today and tomorrow; we're home and things are back to normal.

Tom had 2 stents put in his heart and one in the aorta leading to his kidneys. They found an aneurysm there 'accidently' when they did the heart cath. They were able to do all three at the same time, through the same hole so he's feeling pretty good now. He's sleeping A LOT better than he has for a long time.

Well, better get my walk in before it gets dark. We got my dog back from the 'sitter' (my brother) last night and I intended to get up and walk this morning, but forgot to re-set my alarm so didn't get up in time.

I'm so sorry to hear your SO is in hospital! I hope things get better very soon!
AND I hope you get the job.

I'm still doing WELL not eating sugar!
Today is day 33.

Apart from that I do feel that I'm eating probably too much, and eating more fatty foods, or being more keen on them, since I stopped eating sugar. That's interesting (and worrysome).
I weighed myself (I want to weigh only once a month but I have a hard time not doing it more often) and I have not lost a significant amount of weight. Let me add 'yet'.
Didn't exercise as much as usual, I skipped one day because I was extremely tired. I am always tired but this was worse than usual... On normal days I do 40 or 50 minutes of biking and/ or walking.

Doing a lot better this week. I have had liquid cals 3 days this week, 1 each day, and gone over range at least 1 day while I was traveling and forgot just how many calories are in a med. choc. shake from DQ. emoticon
My SO has been in the hosp. since Sun. night and I had a job interview on Wed. 4 hours from home, so I haven't really had much time to eat. It's been a long one and probably isn't over yet.
How are the rest of you doing?

Well, I made it within calorie range, but snacked half the afternoon instead of having supper. I had 2 cookies (I really need to throw them out, SO is not going to finish them) but the rest of it wasn't so bad.
I got in my exercise and actually went over my goal for calories burned. Now I need to clean out the deepfreeze so I can defrost it in preparation for a quarter of a beef on Mon. emoticon emoticon

All right! Let us know how it goes.

My intention for today is to eat enough but not too much at supper. I know my husband is going to make lasagne and I love it, so I usually eat way too much.
I will NOT have second helpings tonight. And enjoy that portion that I do eat thoroughly! :)

I caved last night and ate a couple cookies and then had chips and salsa. Guess I called it a little too early.

My intention for the day: NO LIQUID CALORIES! We have all my favs in the fridge but I'm not touching them.
Breakfast was 2 scrambled eggs with red pepper, onion, and half an ounce of cheddar cheese (my usual). I'm out of all my breakfast fruits but will have an apple later.
Dinner will be a hamburger patty with no bun and eggplant (fried in butter, of course) and I haven't decided on supper yet. Might make a casserole with hamburger, rice, and chili beans.

Finished off the pie from last weekend; there was only a couple bites left, so probably still within calorie range. Tomorrow will be hard; I only work until noon and I have a terrible time staying out of the kitchen when I'm off work.

Hi Dahlia! I cut out things like candy, cake, ice cream, all that stuff. I don't mind having a little ketchup or sauce or other product that contains a little bit of sugar. Most of those, I don't eat often anyway (maybe once every few weeks).

Hi Dahlia! It's good to have you in the group. The only way I've found to cut back on sweets is to CUT OUT SWEETS! Sorry, but I'm an all or nothing type. Right now I'm working on no liquid calories (pop, beer, etc.) and determined to lose 10 pounds by Thanksgiving. I'm also trying to stay completely away from cookies, candy, etc.

I didn't make it today, I caved and had a cookie when I got home. Still within calorie range, though. Lost 2 pounds since Sun.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the group and trying to find ways to cut back on sweets. I have a horrible sweet tooth. ChristaSP...when you say you've had no sugar for 27 days, are you talking about sweets and treats or about sugar in any food at all?
Thanks.

That sounds like a lovely day.

I'm on day 27 of no sugar today. That means tomorrow it's four weeks!
I've only managed to be sugar free for this long once before, about two years ago: I then wanted to be sugar free for three months - made it for six weeks.
Right now I'm just trying not to judge and not tell myself I 'must' make it: taking it day by day.
But I AM happy though to notice that I can do what I did so far. If I can do 26 days now, I can probably repeat it (and repeat it again). I think. I hope! :)

Well, I overdid the sugar again today. Made a yummy pumpkin turtle pie for a family get-together for my son. It has pumpkin pudding, pumpkin, and cool whip in a graham cracker crust. Not bad! Had a great day! Played pitch and had a good time visiting with family. They hardly ever come to my house and they're only about an hour away.

Sunny, I think Christa is right: you have to set up a Spark page to do a ticker and I can't remember where to go to do that.

Hi Sunnydesk!
The thing you mentioned is a 'ticker'. I think you need to start a sparkpage to get a ticker. As I'm Dutch I'm not good at explaining technical stuff (in a foreign language). But, if you go to the top of your page, you see an orange tool bar, one part of it says 'community'. If you place your cursor on it you see a 'menu' and you can choose 'message boards'. If you click on that you see a list of different message boards. One of them, in the blue area, is called 'site/technical help' and you can ask all your questions there.

I am so new to this and I have only managed to message back and forth with the team leader for no sugar. I noticed you all have a little scale under your comments showing how far you have come along on your goals. Can you tell me how I can get into all that and set a goal or a challenge? 62 years old and new to websites like this. Thank you very much! emoticon

It does get easier; it's like drug or alcohol rehab except that you've got more temptations (I mean, who tells a recoving drug addict 'Go ahead and snort this one time. One isn't going to do any damage' right?). But everyone feels perfectly fine with telling someone 'One piece of cake, or cookie, or whatever isn't going to hurt you'.

Have you noticed the blog on your Start page about the new Start page coming Mon.? I read the blog and watch the short tutorial video; it looks pretty cool.

Hope you're having a great end of the week. I'm off work through Mon. because my son is home. The calorie count is going to suffer, but will try to gorge myself. emoticon
Have a great weekend

Hi! I'm on day 24 today of not eating sugar.... And on day 18 of a 100 day challenge (see also the team '100 days by Linda Spangle').
I'm very glad / grateful that I seem to be able to keep theading days together of no sugar. It does seem that once I get throught the first week or so, it gets easier as the sugar is 'out of my system'. I hope so, anyway.

I haven't tried baked sweet potatoes. Never been a real big fan of regular ones, so not important to me to find a substitute. I read a book called 'Potatoes Not Prozac' by Kathleen DesMaisons that talked about getting off sugar and one of her 'steps' is eating a potato of some kind before bed. I thought that was really interesting because she suggests that white or red potatoes are best. If you have a Nook, I could lend the book to you.
I did pretty good today; didn't track supper because I had a dish that I haven't put in my tracker. It's hamburger, refried beans, cheddar cheese, and picante sauce. We eat it with tortilla chips and homemade guacamole. Mmmmm! It's one of my visiting son's favorites. He's going to be here until Mon. so I'm off work and will be trying really hard not to eat like a hog. I'm making quite a few of our favorites, including sour cream raisin pie. emoticon

You are probably correct about your variety at dinner. We often have a baked sweet potato with our chicken and a large salad. I am often a last minute cook, so I have found those shrink wrapped sweet potatoes that go in the microwave for 6 minutes. Same healthy benefits as an hour- long baked sweet potato which you probably already know is slightly better for us than white potatoes. I also use quick cooking brown rice and add some sauted Vidalia or sweet onions and or mushrooms to it.
I am seeing today that often my poor eating habits are emotional. Kinda having the empty nest syndrome right now, and went for Hardees fries and chicken strips today. It just felt too lonely to make something healthy at home. Wondering what I could have found that soothed ME at Subway? It think you are correct about less sugar helping pain. So far I have still avoided the sugar, other than a little honey in my coffee each morning.

emoticon I wonder if going off sugar will help with the pain? I've heard, and have kind of experienced, that sugar causes aches and pains in some people.

I made it within range again today and I think I've figured out a way to keep the evening cravings at bay. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I may just need a better variety for supper. Usually we do a casserole or grill fish or a burger and really don' t fix a lot to go with it but tonight we were in town so we stopped at Subway for supper and I was much more satisfied. I even had a peppermint pattie and still am not craving something more like I usually do all evening. Guess I need to rethink my supper.

One more day at work and then a 4 day weekend. emoticon

No Coke tonight! emoticon I think I actually came within calorie range, even with the couple bites of cinnamon roll that I snuck. I need to get on the elliptical. I did 30 min. last night. I wasn't going to get on it at all, but then I read something on a Spark page about some lady who rides her stationary bike for 1-2 HOURS a day! and I decided that I could do 30 min. on the elliptical.

I certainly understand about SO and undesirable treats in the house. When he has a glass or two of wine before dinner, I sometimes cannot resist. Just wasteful liquid calories. When my grown sons come to visit, then, I bring temptations into the house for them. emoticon But I think I probably eat more of the bad stuff than THEY do. SO cannot understand why I cannot keep ice cream in the house. You will bounce back from the temporary bump in the road. You have already made great progress! emoticon Your communication helps me soooo much. Chatting with you makes my accountability more of a fun thing! Thanks

emoticon SUNNY! You're doing great!

My goals this week are to eat ALOT less than usual through Thurs. and then use portion control over the weekend. My son is in the Army and is home on leave. He'll be here Fri. - Mon. and I'll be off work so I'll be cooking...and eating...a lot.
I've already had a can of Coke tonight (I wish my SO would quit buying it; he thinks he's being nice) but WILL NOT drink any Tues. - Thurs. I haven't been tracking calories but will try to get back at that for the next 3 days.
Also, getting on the elliptical since the weather is crappy and I won't be walking much.

Today, I decided that as a start I am going to do my best to cut out sugar and really lower artificial sweeteners. I did well today, by even avoiding the sugary dressing that came with my takeout salad and using a lite dressing with less sugar from home. I think I can get used to my coffee tasting more like coffee and not syrup emoticon . Another goal is to do some movement every day and especially some stretches that were doctor prescribed to ease discomfort I have walking. Thanks for listening! I really appreciate it! emoticon

It gets kind of frustrating to always track your food, but it does really help. Sometimes I just have to step back and not track for a couple days, especially if I make something new or that I don't have in my tracker.

I've been drinking an awful lot of Coke lately, but we are out now and not going to town for awhile, so I'm weaning myself off. That's a bad habit.

I will try the gum - maybe that will help. I just get so frustrated with myself because I know that its hormones, but I eat badly anyway. Oh well, I still do a lot better than I did when I wasnt watching what I ate at all.....I will just keep at it :)

I'm like that with bread the week before. The only thing I've found to work is sheer will power. Have you tried chewing gum or hard candy. Delivers the sweet but not as many calories. Other than that, don't keep any of your favorites in the house and find a distraction are the only things I can offer. Good luck!

This past week was tough for me too. As I have moved into my 40's, Ive noticed that my cravings for sweets have gotten much worse the week before my period. I find them almost impossible to resist. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fight the monthly hormone swings??

This is a no week for me. Im going to cut something from my diet each day. Ive been hitting the sugar and carbs pretty hard lately because of this sinus infection (I know, not a good excuse, but its what I crave at times like these) so Im going to wean myself off some of this stuff this week.

Todays no is bread. Managed to make it a pancake-free breakfast this morning, so Im on a roll. Also going to start tracking again.

Really been hitting the sugar and carbs lately. I've had a sinus infection and a bit of a sore throat and I crave carbs and Coke when I'm sick. Feeling better now, though, so it's time to stop!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Yep! I notice a lot of those things, too, plus less pain. When I'm hitting the sugar pretty hard, my hip and legs really hurt and my legs just feel like lead.

Finally finished my 100 days with no candy. I am finding it a lot easier to just have one piece once in awhile rather than emptying the candy dish or, better yet, not eat any at all. Still trying to cut down on sugar in all forms, but the peach cobbler that I made on Sun. sure was good! emoticon

I'm constantly amazed at the changes that I feel in my energy level and in my body when I'm not hitting the sugar so hard. What are some of the differences that you notice?

Yep, I'm still with you! Not doing so great, though. Starting a challenge for one of my teams next week; maybe that'll snap me back to reality.

emoticon LADIVA!

I managed to stay away from the gooey cinnamon rolls that our neighbor brought over; let my SO have them all. I came within calorie range Tues. - Fri. but went way over today. Had 2 cans of my energy drink emoticon and an ice cream cone. Oh well, I exercised more than usual this week. Felt a lot better yesterday and today after eating a little better for the last few days. Nice feeling. Hopefully, today's indulgence won't mess it up too much.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

Awesome - I think the first week is the hardest. Don't be afraid to experiment with healthy sweet substitutes - find something that works for you from banana "ice cream" to fruit. Play around to see what works for you! You can do this!!!!!
