hello, I'm Gigi from the Tampa, FL area and new to the group. Glad to see you have this team. I have been dealing with environmental and chem sensitivities for the past 3 to 5 years that was gradual with the onset of allergies. (some of my reactions are to vehicle fumes, smoke, chem cleaning products, petrochem products, laundry products, fragrances etc) Fortunately I was able to find a holistic m.d. who was familiar with environment and chemical toxicity and ran some tests and treated me for adrenal fatigue (which can demonstrate chem sensitivities) After two years of supplement support for the adrenal fatigue, decreased stressors, nutrition changes, and lots of rest these last 6 to 8 months, I am starting to feel myself again. I lost 30 lbs and looking forwarding to working off more. I unfortunately am still environmental and chemically sensitive and have to use my I can breath mask or a respirator when around triggers or just try to avoid them. I have made great strides in getting myself to feel better. I am now going to try out a limbic system retraining called Dynamic Neural Retraining that was mentioned to me from another group I belong to for the chem sensitivities. Some people have noticed a decreased sensitivity. I was interested to know if anyone on this team has gone through the program and their feedback?

I think its just because they have not experienced it, so don't believe it. I never knew how bad allergies could be until I got them. It is way worse than just the sneezing and sniffling they show on the tv commercials. They make it sound like all you have to do is take a little pill every day and everything is wonderful. Not so.

I am reading more and more about people being sensitive. What is really irksome though is that the doctors think we are all crazy even though there is lots of evidence that chemicals cause health problems.

In reading your posts, I see over and over again that people don't believe we really react to things. We need to find a way to educate people about MCS. I was so happy to find this group so I could blog with people who did not think it was "all in my head"!!

Tide is the worst!! I can't handle that one at all. I think it is cheaper, so a lot of people like to use it. Even before I was CS, I didn't like the way it performed. I used All. So it wasn't a big change when I started using the Free and Clear. I put baking soda in to boost the cleaning and whiten.

I always thought my friend was a hypochondriac and now that I am sick I STILL think she is a hypochondriac! She has had every malady known to mankind and now that I am CS she says she is too! I believe she has an intolerance to some things and maybe it is the beginning of CS, who knows, but I don't think she has it to the extent that I do. She uses scented Tide, bleach, ammonia, cleans her carpets twice a year with commercial cleaners, etc. I have not seen her in about 9 months because she won't give up the scented Tide and I just cannot tolerate it even for a minute.

I am ashamed to admit, I used to think my dad was a hypochondriac. When I lived in Denver, my mom and dad came to visit me. The pollution is terrible there, but I was in my 20's and didn't smell a thing. I didn't even have allergies. But, my dad said he kept smelling gasoline and auto exhaust. Little did I know I would be able to smell perfume from across a football field. LOL

Most medical doctors have got that look down pat. If you ever get rich and want to go to a MD who also practices homeopathy, you will have a totally different response. You actually feel validated by having someone understand.

I also read that article. It was very well written. I learned somethings from it too. I never thought about Child Abuse or parents being somewhat chemically sensitive. My dad was allergic to everything, my mom suffered from fatigue and migraines for years. I won't go into the child abuse. I put a link on my Facebook Page. I don't know if anyone will follow the link, but it is there.

Glad you had a good visit and they took such good care of you. So far, when I talk about MCS to the medical profession I just get the deer in the headlights look.

TREPPILS, what a great site! That is even clear enough for most medical people to understand! emoticon Thank you for sharing that. I will print it out and hand it out.
I recently had a colonoscopy and the hospital I had it at was one I had used about 5 years ago and then, it was real bad for people like me with MCS. What a difference though! They found out about my problem (I told the doctor and the nurse and everybody in between)and they actually took a separate room and cleaned it thoroughly, then turned the air conditioner on and left the door open prior to me going in. They were very concerned the cleaners they used would bother me. Then they took me to a room after where I was all alone so there was no problem with the public or other patients bothering me. I was so surprised!

I try to encourage everyone on the team to put their locations on the team map so everyone knows where everyone lives, but not too many people do it. You can check the team map.

Also, if you want to find someone near you, check the yahoo groups Green Canaries. It is a good one to join anyway, if you aren't already in it. There are a few other ones too.

I started with a new doctor and was going back Thursday for a review of my lab work. The patient area was loaded with fragrances as well as the nurse that checked me in. I had my mask on with a charcoal filter but the stench got through anyway. What a rough weekend this has been. Hope you had a better one.

Yes, it is the I Can Breathe mask. The first one I bought lasted about 9 months, but the newer ones the little plastic thing keeps breaking. Not too happy about that.

It can be a bit warm in the summer, but it beats the alternative (sore, achy lungs).

I guess we shouldn't feel embarrassed about wearing a mask. We should feel thankful we can be a witness that there is such a problem out there.

I have been using one of those masks for about a year now. I must have it on whenever I am in a car. Its a bit embarrassing sometimes, but you get used to it. I also wear one when I sleep at night.

I just bought a new mask with a charcoal filter. I got it online from www.icanbreathe.com. It works quite well and allows me more freedom. It has also drawn attention to the problem of MCS. I also wear a pin that says "Your perfume is killing me". Between the two, I have received a lot of comments-positive comments.

TREPPILS, I know just how you feel. We bought a USED car-a program car. The dealership put Bounce sheets under the seats! Wow! It was 6 months before I could drive it and that was after many many detoxing at the dealership. Seems they didn't realize this was a problem and now they are taking steps to correct that and not use Bounce anymore. A victory for our side!

I forgot to mention....I use a portable air purifier in my car made by AmerCare. It has a VOC canister on it. You can plug it into your power supply/cigarette lighter in your car or run it on electricity. It works pretty good esp. for longer trips. It is fairly small. I keep it on the seat next to me. I think it cost about $150.

I was thinking of buying a battery supply for mine and turning it on about an hour before I drive my car just to make the air a bit better inside.

I'm sorry you are having that problem. Sandy seems to have an edge on it though :) I just wanted to mention to you that bounce makes me extremely ill. Laundry detergents, fabric softeners and drier sheets are among my worst enemies. That may be escalating the problem.

Something very similar happened to me. I bought a new car since my old one was making me sick. At the time I had no idea why, but I suspected it was mold. Of course, it was MCS, so buying a new car was not a good idea at all. After 5 months I still could not be in the car at all. I eventually sold the car at a loss of course. I am now trying to find a replacement vehicle but am leary of taking the risk of losing more money on a car I cannot drive.

Anyway, I have done some things with my truck to make it more comfortable for me. This is what I have done:

1) Zeolite rocks. I keep these in my truck at all times. These absorb odors but need to recharged periodically by putting them out in the sun. I have also read about Zeolite powder which I have debated trying, but have not as of yet. The rocks come in small packages of plastic netting which makes them convenient to move around and take in and out of the car. The plastic seems to be non-toxic.

2) Carbon fabric. I lined the entire floor of my truck with it. I think it helps, but it tears easily. I used the bags of Zeolite rocks to hold it in place. I also put in on my seats and covered it with some blankets. After a while it scrunches up toward the back of your seat.

3) Borax. I cleaned the entire interior of my truck with a carpet cleaner using Borax. This may help. I have to warn you though that I used a bit too much and there was white Borax powder residue so I had to clean it again with plain water.

4) Vinegar. You could clean it using vinegar. I have debated cleaning the interior with just plain vinegar in my carpet cleaner. Vinegar neutralizes a lot of odors. I have a plastic odor on my carpet in the guest room where there was one of those plastic things to allow a chair to move freely on the carpet. The odor is horrible and won't go away. I am planning on doing the carpet with either Borax, vinegar or Mystical carpet cleaner which is chemically safe.

5) Baking soda. Keep on open box of baking soda in your car and change it often. This alone probably won't work well, but after you clean it.

Ventilate the car as often as possible, whether driving or parked. I bought some of those rain shields for the windows so I can leave my windows cracked open all the time even when raining. Keep a sun shield in your front window to keep the car from getting really hot on those warm, sunny days. This really keeps the chemical odors down. Also, park in the shade whenever possible.

You can get the Mystical, zeolite and carbon fabric at
www.nontoxic.com
They also have carbon blankets which are heavier and more durable which may be better options for the car seats than the fabric since the fabric tears so easily. The down side is that these products are not cheap. It is also difficult to find things on their website. It is not designed very well in my opinion. There may be other places you can get them, I have not looked.

I think I would try giving the interior a good cleaning and then put some sort of odor absorber in it afterward.

Please let us know if you have any success getting the smell out. We all have these problems, unfortunately.

I recently bought a new used car. The dealershiip in its infinite ignorance, put Bounce dryer sheets under the front seats. Long story short, I can not ride nor drive our new 2007 Toyota Camry because of the stench. It makes me ill, literally. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the smell? The dealership is doing everything they can think of. Right now, it is in the garage again and they are using agricultural lime in an attempt to get rid of the smell. I have a $20,000 car that I can't use! uggg! Help! emoticon

I certainly know what you mean. Working in IT, which I know you do also, you have to explain things to users on the phone a lot. Sometimes its really hard, but we all have those "I just don't get it" moments even though its obvious.

I just explained to a newby how to do that and how to add an emoticon. It's challenging to describe it all simply enough for someone who never noticed the buttons!

Yeah, I figured it out. From one fellow geek to another sometimes us geeks overlook the obvious! I probably just didn't go back to fix it once I figured it out.

Here is another site... http://www.mcs-america.org

This site deals a lot with the MCS persons rights and such but is also a good reference for info about what MCS is, alternative chemical free products for personal care, household cleaning, etc (look under Grandma's Cupboard for these). It also lists doctors by state who recognize and treat people with MCS. There is a bunch more info there also.

Not sure why my link doesn't work. The site name is correct. I've tried changing the way I put it in and it still doesn't make an active link. This site name is correct though.
