Patrick, your goal of dropping 50lbs in about a year is quite do-able. Consider this:
50 lbs in a year is about 1 pound per week.
3500 calories is the rule of thumb for a pound. That's gaining it, or losing it. That comes down to 3500 per week, or 500 per day.
How do you cut those 500 calories per day? It seems pretty daunting, but some obious choices are replacing any soda you drink with water. a 12 oz can of coca cola has 155 calories. a 16oz bottle has over 200. If you drink 2 per day normally, and replace those with 32oz of water, that's 400 calories off of the top.
Exercise burns calories. A 20 minute bike ride on a stationary bike at a moderate pace burns about 200 calories. Do that 3x a week and there's 600 from cardio alone.
