Anyone finding good deals? I'm getting my veggies at the local outdoor farmer's market. They grow organically but don't charge as much as the stores and are cheaper.

Vegan Way to make this-

Healthy Dinner

* 1/2 cup reduced-sodium chicken flavored broth
* 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
* 4 cups broccoli florets, frozen or fresh
* 1 garlic clove, minced
* 1 tablespoon vegetable or olive oil
* 1 lb tofu, cut into thin strips, seasoned with veggie chicken flavoring
* 2 tablespoons Dijon or spicy brown mustard

Mix chicken flavored broth and soy sauce; set aside. Cook and stir broccoli and garlic in hot oil in large skillet on medium-high heat until crisp-tender. Remove from skillet; cover to keep warm. Add tofu to skillet; cook and stir 3 to 4 minutes or until browned. Add broth mixture; mix well. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in mustard until well blended. Return broccoli mixture to skillet; mix lightly. Cook until heated through, stirring occasionally.

I buy a lot of things when they are on offer such as yogurts, butter, oats(I buy there biggest bag available) I try not to buy too much at our Co-op as it is expensive, I try to make things myself and not to buy ready meals as they are usually salt laden.

I have been on road for awhile. It is expense when trying to buy food without the opportunity to prepare as in home. I don't like how I feel eating food I don't prepare my way. I will figure out and compensate as time goes. Have a great week everyone.

I have a lot of steel cut oatmeal in the pantry.
I eat two servings in the morning. I have well over 110 servings, so this and a piece of fruit should keep my breakfasts going for well over 3 months.
I wonder if other people buy dry goods in bulk when they are on sale?
Sincerely, julia

Well I figure I should focus on what is in the pantry.
For breakfast I made some quick cook steel cut oats with a partial can of pumpkin, some all spice, nutmeg and cinnamon. I added stevia for a wonderful sweetness.
My husband is going to make me a emoticon Cake. I plan on enjoying and savor ing the moments.

I bought a beef pot roast Friday for $3.29 per pound. 3#=$9.87
Then a 2# bag of Carrotts for 79 cents and previously bought 4# bag of potatoes for $2.29
I used about 1/3 bag of potatoes, and all the Carrotts.
Some I'm up to $11.43 before tax. Every one of us four enjoyed a wonderful supper treat and there was leftovers for 3 of us the next day.
The slow cooker had a lot of wonderful juice so I added 12 servings of Great Northern Beans and 6 serving of brown rice to juice and have about six big meals of beans and rice for my lunches (or quick dinners).
I would estimate the beans and rice are around 25 cents per meal.
The roast/potatoes/Carrotts were around $1.65 per meal. We had big portions at dinner and leftovers.
What a treat. I enjoyed the rice and beans as I type this. Wonderful as well as cost effective.
If I had a butcher near by I would see if I could buy soap bones cheap. This would make a wonderful base for my rice and beans when I don't have the luxury of a big roast.
I wish I could share this meal with you in person, but hopefully this is special too.
Sincerely, Julia

I was able to make veggie pizzas, using almond flour for the crust.
Went to the food bank today, had to go through without paying for it.
I got lots of veggies, 4 lbs strawberries, junk food for hubby, some fish and more.

I so would love to go grocery shopping. Saturday evening I made 10 servings of dried navy beans with 10 servings of rice blends. Added broth and hot sauce and cooked overnight in slow cooker. I divided into 290 no serving size and froze some and refrigeratored some. That has been my main meals Sunday, Monday and today with my yogurt/pineapple for breakfast each morning. The beans and rice blends together is really good. I did add some Worcestershire sauce my sister had left here with garlic powder and ghost pepper sauce my DH boss gave us from his vacation. My stomach has a different kind of hole in it from the hot sauce. Can't eat too much. Have a great week everyone. Oh..... I found some cut celery in a draw in the frog from grad party over holiday weekend. Very happy treat :-)

I get my Xylitol at the Nutrition store. It's not cheap unfortunately, but it does last me 3 months, so total cost is $5 a month.
The crystallized ginger came in a packet from Food bank last year. I keep it in the freezer.
Teriyaki sauce can be made with Splenda or Stevia and powdered ginger.

Made a teriyaki sauce today with 2 tbsp sesame oil, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp Xylitol sweetener, and 1 small block crystallized ginger.

Mmmm was delicious, put it on broccoli, mushrooms, red bell pepper & a packet of salmon.

Wow Susan, those meals sound wonderful. I am so happy your DD is doing so wonderful thanks to both you and her dedication. That is emoticon .
On another part of this site someone mentions an "INflamation Rating" system. I did a search and it looked like a lot of interesting information on foods that are positive and negative for INflamation .
Maybe there could be away to eliminate the 10% in the future. It is nice when our children don't have pain. Tis is wonderful news.
Thanks for sharing.

Money is so tight due to so many expenses due at once. I am getting very creative making meals with what I have on hand.
Made a Mexican meal past couples of onion, red & green bell pepper, soy black beans, diced tomatoes, chicken pieces cut from an 8 oz breast. Added cumin, Mrs Dash's Chili Lime & Chili powder.
Last night I slice zucchini lengthwise into narrow thin strips then cut those in thirds to resemble egg noodles. Made an Alfredo sauce with butter, cream & mozzarella. Sauteed the zucchini in oil and bacon bits, added 3 oz foil packed salmon.

My daughter loved these meals. I have her off all starches and sugar for a year now and her muscle pain is down 90%.

emoticon Susan, that's a nice thing for you to say. You have a good point. Aldi's is about 8 miles away. So round trip is just over a gallon of gas in truck and less than a gallon in DH car. I save a lot of money when no one takes me emoticon . The veggie stand sold me avocado for 4/$1 because they were mushy. Wow, perfectly ripe for me. I have had avocado sandwiches for the last two days. I bought a cucumber and tomatoes and jalapenos to slice on top of some German rye toast. emoticon yummy. Life is so fantastic emoticon take care everyone.

I have no idea what is on sale this week. Lit'l shack opened yesterday. It is close to the house and I can buy locally grown produce there. It is a husband and wife trying to make enough to pay taxes on their land so it isn't taken away. That is what happened to many as our town grows and the city wants big business to come in. Three families had their property condemned so Sam come in. Their homes torn down and now that same property is for sale for more stuff to get packed in. It is so frustrating. So, this Lit'l shack cost more than Aldi's, but I want to support this family to be able to keep this property. I will find other areas to cut back. God will reveal in His timing. Happy weekend. I'm going to go get some Navy beans soaking. Sincerely, Julia

DH took me to Aldi's today. Quick shopping for baby carrots 99 cents per pound, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, 2# of dried Great Northern Beans, some frozen red raspberries, and some green bananas at 29 cents per pound. I think that was it besides a bag of potato chips and some Moose Track ice cream for my DDs . Oh, I bought eggs and some more egg substitute. I figure by mid week the banana will be ripe and I can make some banana bread with the egg substitute and whole wheat flour. I was able to get some flaxseed last night, so I'm excited to bake with these healthy ingredence.
I put together a great pancake recipe using egg substitute, oatmeal, almond milk (cow milk will do too). It was very good. If you want me to share the recipe, just ask. But since your dd doesn't like eggs I didn't know if you ever made just for yourself.

Good morning Susan. Well I had some of them dumpster diving egg substitute emoticon for breakfast ... Wonderful emoticon I'm glad I found them too. Well, as long as I don't get food poisoning ... emoticon
I put some onions, and mushrooms and kale in with them. After all that I was still able to add pineapple and cottage cheese to the meal with coffee. I real over did with food but not too much calorie. So, it is a great morning of spoiling myself a little. I better get some work done, but first I want to send you a goodie my friend. Have a great day Susie emoticon

My DD threw away my egg substitute emoticon . I took it out of trash, washed the container off, and put back in refrigerator emoticon
I said, why did you do this, she had read the expiration date to be Jan when in fact it is jun.
I told her not to throw out my food. I said I don't mind eating expired food. But, it wasn't expired, I just want her to leave my food alone. I get so frustrated with the waste. They have no idea what not having enough food is really like. I do, and I don't feel comfortable wasting food. Ugh . So, I'm going to make an omelet today for breakfast emoticon

I made steel cut oatmeal and pinto beans together. This is similar to rice and beans only a different twist. I'm really enjoying it. I made 5 servings of each, so I have a big batch to reheat. Tonight I sauté veggies together and added a serving off oats/beans with wasabi sauce added. It was great and very cost effective. I think I eat too much emoticon emoticon funny how my eating too much is on whole grains and veggies.

Physical therapy is helping emoticon . Thanks Susan!
Beans, beans, beans are getting to be a most favorite food for me. I can lift a 2# bag of dried beans and manage to keep them on hand. My DH found a roast in the back of the freezer so I slow cooked that yesterday. Well it had a big bone in it and a lot of fat, so I made a lot of veggies and mash potatoes for my DDss.
I had 45 grams of meat then a couple helpings of asparagus. emoticon yummy!
I didn't want to wash the slow cooker with all that good drippings so I washed some pinto and Navy beans, put the bone back into the slow cooker, covered with tap water, added some celery and greens from the freezer I have been collecting, dried onions and CURRY POWDER, yes curry powder, on a whim emoticon . I cooked on high a couple hours then low a couple hours.
This morning I calculated the serving size, reheated a serving, and enjoyed with cottage cheese and pineapple. What a great breakfast only I would appreciate emoticon
I cooled this concoction before putting it up in the refrigerator over night.

Oh I hope therapy helps and that you can go to pool. Sometimes physical therapy will put a heat pack on it that feels really good on the muscles surrounding the nerve.

I sure have been enjoying my pineapple chucks from Costco. There are 13 serving in the bag that cost $5.99. That's less then 50 cents a serving and I'm experimenting to see if it helps my OA symptoms. I thaw out the pineapple and mix it in cottage cheese ..... Yummy!!!
Sometimes I keep the chunks frozen and blender it with Greek yogurt for a delicious dessert. I add a packet of Stevia to the unsweetened yogurt for an additional burst of sweet, but probably more out of habit since the pineapple is so sweet on its own.
Well I'm off to physical therapy. Today is scheduled pool, but if the weather becomes stormy that plan will change.
My C5 root nerve is aggravated. I had spinal fusion of C5-6-7 but this root is above the fusion area. With DDD, this is to be expected. I just didn't want for this to occur. I'm hoping therapy slows the progression some.
Have a happy day!
Sincerely, Julia

It's fun to go to Costco...isn't it? when we have enough money of course. Nice you can eat beans and get full.
Yesterday my older daughter treated Mary & I to a girl's day out. We ate at Sizzler, I ate just veggies and meat. Drank tea and added my Stevia. Then went to a salon and all 3 of us had manicures and pedicures. Then we went home and I made veggies & chicken and salads for dinner.

Happy Sunday. I'm not emoticon so I don't know.
My DD took me to Costco today. We hope to visit my oldest DD soon, so I thought bringing her so cheese, nuts, chicken and meat would be helpful to her. She always seems to appreciate the things we bring.
I bought some Greek yogurt and frozen pineapple. Made a wonderful treat blending those two together.
I have been eating a lot of split peas this last week. 1# of split pea was about $1.29
10 servings, so I ate a couple servings a day. It has been a very filling deal.
I will probably make some dried navy beans this coming week.

Very cool that you have your DD a precious gift for her up coming birthday. April birthday people are precious. Several of my most favorite cousins and my wonderful Godmother were born in April. Have a great day. I'm looking fwd to seeing the pictures.
So a person can upload pictures from their android phone? I need to get my children to help me with this. I have yet to make a sparkpage emoticon something so simple for some is so confusing for me. I use to be quite bright. Now I am many times very dim. But I'm happy. And I am succeeding in my weightloss program emoticon

Went to my food bank today. We sit in camp chairs and socialize until the food is ready to distribute. We go through a line and select what we want and pay $20 for quite a bit of food. I go there weekly.

Usually someone passes around sugar & high carb food that I've been refusing, but today someone offered avocado, sliced egg & pieces of fresh asparagus. My spring green salad was so delicious! All I added to it was tomatoes(it's all I had in fridge) and my Ranch salad dressing made with almond milk.

AND ALSO GOT: 3 very very pretty new scarves w/ tags. I am giving them to my daughter for her birthday on the 23rd this month!!! Doing happy dance.. got her gifts.....hehehe

I did get my new eyeglasses! They are Transitions lenses and high index.I'll get a picture soon. I use my android cellphone, was cheaper than buying a digital camera. My cellphone was only $50.00. I've had it for a year now.
My glasses were total of $520, but with my insurance, only $62.
I'll add photos of my daughter to my album.

Thank you Julia!
I got lots of veggies again, 2 large bottles extra virgin olive oil, unhealthy snacks that my husband was able to take out of the house for me, lol, and bread for him and lots more.
Took my 13 yr old daughter shopping for clothes, got her 3 dresses, 2 skirts and a sequined jacket for $2.99 each, 1 skirt and a polo shirt at $4.99 each, a dress at $19.99 and a nice dress jacket at $7.99. A lot of the clothing is Forever 21 brand. Spent $60. The outfit she wore to volunteer in today, cost me $2,99 for the dress and $7.99 for the coat, retail total value of $100.
We got our income tax return in, and it's mostly gone between daughter's clothing and my dental work, oh well.

No one was available to take me to the store this weekend. My DH did pick up a 2# bag of carrots for me.
I had bought some raspberries (frozen) on sale awhile back, so I have been enjoying steel cut oatmeal from our pantry, frozen raspberries from the freezer that I mix into the oatmeal, and Susan got me to thinking my DD had helped me pick up some shelf stable almond milk the last time we were at the Walmart, so I added 1/2 cup of almond milk to my oatmeal ... emoticon . I'm eating like a queen. I put hot water on top of the raspberries for a while to heat them up before putting them on my hot oatmeal. Then I have the water as a refreshing raspberry tea. Wonderful, wonderful.
I have plenty of dried beans on hand and that frozen chopped Kale I had gotten at Costco for $3.99 a few weeks back. That one bag has about 21 servings in it, and I have 1/2 of the bag remaining, so I have no excuse not to get my veggies and fruits in daily. I just have to be content with what I have available to me. Which is a lot.
Have a terrific Tuesday emoticon
I think Tuesdays are my most favorite day of the week day days.

Those $'s add up. Glad you found such a great deal.
I had a recipe for garlic soup a decade ago and could never find it .... Well yesterday I found it. I had most of the ingredients so improvised a little and made a small batch. I now own a stick blender so that helps a lot.
It turned out devious. With the recipe calculator I could plug in all the ingredient and see the calorie count. emoticon and all these wonderful tools.
This soup is for the people that like onions and garlic. It is a very healthy cost effective soup. Today I added beans into it and made a filling meal.
1 onion, 14 +\~ cloves garlic ... (2 heads), 32 oz chicken stock, 1 slice old bread ( I used rye that was old), 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup grated parmasean cheese. Olive oil ( I used 7 ml).
Caramelized onions in oil, then add garlic. When garlic soft add broth. Cube up old bread and toss into broth. Heat all and then take stick blender to it.
After all chopped up good add milk, then heat on low and add cheese. Mix well and serve. Before the stick blender I would cut up onion more before caramelized it. The bread would dissolve on its own in the broth. The stick blender gives it a unique texture, but is not news scary.
I used whole milk because DD milk was getting close to expiration date.
If anyone try's this, let me know. I added wasabi sauce for a kick. Recipe called for red pepper flakes.
Enjoy

Great deals Julia. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can do with a pineapple core.
I was born with one hand so shaving under my arms is difficult. With my raging hormones hair remover creams do not work anymore. Luckily now they have pivoting 3 & 4 blade razors! I found that my grocery store has copy cat pivoting razors. I bought them for $4 less than major brand and I got 4 razors instead of 3.

My DD went to Aldi's with me today. I got a fresh pineapple for $1.29. I'm going to cook the core again instead of throwing it away. I tossed it in with some beans last week to add flavor. They were pinto beans and I used a stick blender to make an interesting refried bean dish. I had read that the core of the pineapple has a lot of nutrition that is even more concentrated. I did it because I hate throwing food away. I will use it again in something. I'm thinking of baking the pineapple core and a couple "getting old" apples in the oven then stick blending to make homemade applesauce. I'll let you know how it turns out. The pineapple isn't ripe yet, so I figure in a week to 10 days it will be ripe. I bought two (2) bags of oranges. A 4# bag was $1.29 a bag. Four (4) grapefruit rang up at 29 cents a piece.
Low fat cottage cheese and Fage 0% Greek yogurt will give me plenty of protein for the week ahead. I still have a lot of dried beans to soak and make for delicious dishes.
Have a great weekend. Sincerely, Julia

Had only $11 to spend at store last week. Got a 36 pkg corn tortillas ($1), big bag salad mix lettuce ($2.99), 3 large apples($1), 1 pkg sugar-free chocolate ($1.99), 2 boxes sugar-free jello ($1.98) and tub of butter/canola oil spread ($1.99). We felt like this was such a treat to get this food. We did not have enough gas to get even a free box at the food bank. We aren't starving, I have lots off cut veggies in freezer bags in freezer, and today cooking a roast I thawed. Still have 2 turkey patties, 2 turkey legs and a large chicken breast in the freezer. Payday is this Friday.

Make up .... That's sounds like an amazing deal for that brand. I'm fortunate I have no where to go that I wear make up but my daughters use it a little. One of my DD took me to Costco and I picked up my favorite Greek yogurt. I thought I was getting a great deal at Aldi's paying $4 for 2 cups, but the Costco was $5 for 6 cups. Until yesterday I thought Costco was $5 for the same 2 cup size. Once I picked it up it was 3 times the size.
So, I got yogurt and very lean pork loin for $1.99/#.
My DH took me to Aldi's today and I was able to stock up on fresh veggies and frozen red raspberries. Dinner was so wonderful. I had a wrap of sauté veggie (onions, carrots, mushrooms, celery and mini peppers). So yummy emoticon with 3 oz of grilled pork loin. I met all my nutrition goals today. It is a blessing to have the right healthy food in the house.

Aww Julia... you are such a positive thinker when things don't go as you like. An inspiration you are!
I had to get make-up with coupons for myself. Almay make-up at Rite-Aid was buy 2 get 1 free & I had two $2 coupons. Three make-up items ended up costing me about $3 each. I took a photo of myself in my car with all my new make-up on. posting it in my album now.

I'm cleaning out the pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Sometimes not being able to go shopping is a good thing. Well I did pick up some oranges at Costco at my husband's request. I tried one last night and it was pink. What the surprise .... I looked at the label and that's the way they are ... A pink orange. I'm disappointed I have 10# of them to eat ... Yuck emoticon . O well.

I hope you enjoy the products.
I wasn't able to go shopping Saturday so I'll make due with what I have. Yesterday I was out all day with DD and DH visiting a college thing. DH took us out to eat after ..... Way off my goals but it was an exception that taught me much as I log the data. I'm so ready for healthy eating at a realistic price. I really dislike eating out, but my family so loves it, and it was a special occasion. The college was about 3 hours away, so ..... O ell.
Happy, healthy and fun Sunday to everyone. emoticon and this team!

Thank you Julia. We wear these dresses for Jobs Daughters meetings and events. I am not going to the food bank today, we are good for food this week. Payday is Friday too. I went to an extreme couponing event last December. Today I printed coupons and made a list from a website http://grocerysmarts.com and will go to the store and spend less than $5 at each store with my coupons.

emoticon Susan. Back many many years ago I went golfing in Palm Springs. A uniquely beautiful area. Golf is less expensive in June. I love the heat. So glad you found beautiful deals.

So the Boston baked beans turned out great. Maybe not for everyone taste but it reminds me of the soybeans my mom would spice up so we would enjoy the food she could afford. Its so healthy too. I like the Great Northern bean better than the soybeans I had as a kid.
Happy Monday everyone emoticon

4# bag of oranges again for $1.39. Then a fresh pineapple for $1.29. Bought my yogurt and cottage cheese. I'm making a Boston baked bean recipe I found on this site. I changed the ketchup to BBQ sauce and bacon to bacon salt. I had everything to make them so I'm excited to try them tomorrow. 13 servings from a pound of dried great northern beans. Probably less than $0.15 a serving. emoticon

I only bought some chicken and fish at Walmart. I also bought my Almond milk at Trader Joe's this time. Wow, it's so much better than Almond Breeze. The rest of my food was from the food bank, was able to pay $20 and pick out food for myself. Got bell peppers, zucchinis, onions, cucumbers, radishes, lettuce, 2 loaves of bread, double pkg English muffins, Dijon mustard, cilantro, a honeydew melon, a whole spiral sliced ham, large jar of pickled bell pepper, some sugar free gum and a 16 pack of Crystal Light lemonade. I also got some junk food & gave that to my skinny husband, lol.

South California , I use to live there. In the 80's my area had lemon groves and wine vines. It probably looks so different now. I worked on the other side of Ontario airport at an aircraft engine overhaul facility. I bought a house later in Victorville which was a long commute but beautiful and well worth it. Now I'm in the Midwest and not sure where the oranges are coming from (Fl...Tx), but are great and on sale again this week for $1.30 a 4#bag and 25 cent grapefruit. I'm ready for some citrus, been doing apples all week. I figure as long as I can get this great fruit I go with that and add some navy beans in for protein.
Susan, I hope the food bank is good to you this week. I'm hoping you get to go skating too. Ice or roller was what I was curious about.
Take care guys! Sincerely, Julia

My oranges have been really sweet & juicy. I get them from the food bank. I had to get a free box this week & loved the food. Turkey luncheon meat, tomatoes on the vine, head of lettuce & more.

Hi Julia,

How were the oranges? Here in southern california, the oranges in our area have been horrible! Not juicy or sweet, and pretty pricey too! So kuddos to you on your find!

A 4# bag of navel oranges for $1.29. I bought two (2) bags and my DH & I am enjoying "raw" emoticon . I've been weighting mine on a scale in grams so that I track properly. I bought two and I'm already into the second bag.

This week hamburger was on sale for $1.99 a pound limit 4 packs. I brought them home and cooked them up and froze in smallish bags. Now when I make dinner, I can just chip off the amount I need and put the rest of the bag back in the freezer for another day. Because they are already cooked, I don't have to cook a whole pound at once....

I won't buy hamburger at regular price, it is just too expensive. Sometimes I will make meatballs - then I only need to take enough out of the bag for 1 serving -- , or I will season the beef with taco seasoning before cooking. Sometimes I will just freeze as burger patties....
