I have made whole wheat bread and turned it into bread crumbs. That was because my loaves didn't turn out & I didn't want waste it. I mix it in foods to add fiber, especially if I added wheat germ or flaxseed meal to the bread recipe. I'll mix it taco meat, spaghetti, etc. It helps fill up my skinny husband too, lol.

I inherited a bread machine as well. I do not use mine because I have found that I cannot resist fresh warm bread with tons of butter.
It will go in my garage sale in the spring!

Thank you! I have some organic honey my adult daughter bought for me from a local farm. That sounds so delicious!

Owens, the bread falls because of humidity or not the right balance of yeast and sugars. i've pretty much figured it out for my area. it's just a matter of trial and error.

I've also figured a pretty good honey wheat recipe as well. i use about 1/4 cup of orange blossom honey for the sugar and cut the actual sugar amount the recipe book called for and its super yum!

My bread always falls cooking in my bread machine. Now I have a culinary school baking cookbook. The recipes are fattening though. I could use recipes for healthy bread.

Is that the Easter bread with the colored eggs baked into the braided loaf? I've never made one, but I remember childhood neighbors' moms making them!

I hope you have fun with making bread. I'm sure you will come up with your own honey-wheat recipe :)

:) I cook all the time and baking is more of a rarity. I do on occasion make banana bread.. which is a quick bread ;) and even my grandmother's easter bread..that's work and a half..but the bread is SOO worth it ;)

Thanks again! and we do have King Author around here.. i live in NC.. so i've seen it around. now i know what to look for. I usually pay a bit more for a Honey Wheat bread..that's 100% whole grain wheat. my kids love it because it's slightly sweeter but still healthy for them. :)

PS - your kids will have fond memories of you baking bread. I think of the memories of my gram making stuff in her kitchen when I was growing up. Such memories bring such a warm and fuzzy feeling :)

My pleasure! The mixes out here are King Arthur (flour company) mixes. Sometimes you can get them at Ross (like TJ Maxx) in their food aisle. They are about $3 each, but some stores charge more.

I'd suggest trying one of those mixes before making your own. When you make your own, begin with white bread, then wheat, then denser loaves as white is the easiest to make. This way, you'll have success right off the bat and learn how to tweak recipes.

I think it's less expensive to make bread at home if you compare apples to apples. For example, it's cheaper to buy Wally-world bread but is it the same kind of bread you'd make in your bread maker? I sometimes treat myself to a wheatberry bread that costs a little more, but so do those loaves if I buy them from the bakery section of the grocery.

There is a nice oatmeal bread I make that is absolutely less expensive to make as a daily bread. If you like, I can share the recipe with you :)

cool! I'll definitely be on the lookout for some! are they cost effective though? i go through anywhere from 3-5 loaves a week of bread off the shelf.. when it's a sandwich night for dinner.. it's nothing to almost polish off a loaf of bread. I've got a family of 6 but one's an infant..so doesn't count lol..well not yet anyway for eating of the bread..only by proxy ;)

Do you happen to know the brand name? and does it state on the box that it's designed for a bread machine?

thanks for lettin me pick your brain :)

They're not usually right on eye-level shelves. Where I live, they put them on the top shelf near the all-purpose and other flours in the baking aisle.

They are in boxes just a bit smaller than cereal boxes. Some of them include the yeast packets. I'm excited for you to try one! The smell of baking bread makes it all the more fun :)

Try one of the bread machine mixes from the grocery first. Wal-Mart sells them too. My recipes are a bit off because of the altitude here. The bread machine box mixes are a really good place to start though. I remember one of the brands at Wal-Mart was a delicious wheat-berry loaf. Mmm :)

Happy baking bread!

i've got a question for y'all..
i've inherited a Bread Machine..i'd love to use it, but i didn't get the instruction manual that came with. does anyone here have a bread machine that can give me a basic recipe? i'd make my own bread with it if i could.

thanks.
