I do like to go check out the blogs of people that pop up on here, but it is usually between me and maybe three other people. I feel a little sad about it.
Let's pick it up!

I am thinking about sending a team mail to see if that gets more attention to see who is still here than posting on a message board...

Thoughts?

For any of you out there with red hair this past week someone wanted to brake the Guinnes Book of Record for the most red haired people assembled at one time. The old record was 250 and she aimed for 500. To her surprise 900 people came, had their picture taken and enjoyed the moment.

Hello, fellow classmates. It's comforting to see there are still some of us left who joined the same week way back when.

I'm hanging in there on maintenance, fluctuating 2 or 3 pounds within goal. This is the longest I've ever stayed at my goal range. Ever.

Take care.

Hey all! I haven't posted here very often and I just realized that we are all coming up on our Sparkversary. For me it will be two years next month. I haven't always been very active hear and the first year I didn't have much success, but over the past year I have managed to drop 50 lbs and I am now on the downward slop again. I have decided to try and make this more of a commitment so that I can stay focused and suck up some of the wonder full support, advise, and tips that you all offer, and hopefully send some of each back in return. I have made it a personal goal to get on here everyday and post a blog. It has been very helpful, and I have met some wonderful people who have helped me through some rough patches already. So why not a new spark year resolution? I have made it a goal to walk more so that I can do a 5k! I will be walking it at first, but I hope to run it sometime in the future. So I challenge all of you to come up with a goal! Let's see what we can do in our new spark year. Are you with me! emoticon

Live,Love, and be Happy!

Thanks you, Stormfan. This is the website to get support. I couldn't have done it without my Spark buddies. Well, I could, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

Good luck.

Y'all are so nice with the compliments... but I have lost 60lbs over the course of 4 years. I joined SparkPeople in August because I found it was a better tracking system than Weight Watchers on-line. Since August I have lost about 28 lbs.

Slow but sure!

Thanks again for all the nice comments!!!

So Cyndy ... maybe you're losing slower than molasses, but from your tracker, that is a fantastic amount of molasses you've lost.

Besides, it's still better to be losing ...even if it's slower than molasses ... than to be gaining, right?

Alan -- Feel Better!!!!

I am still losing weight slower than molasses.... my metabolism just stinks! I tried a circuit training class this week.. using the BOSU ball. I am so sore, I can't even tell you. Gotta hand it to those who can do those exercises with ease.

Have a great weekend!

Just wanted to check in and say Hi. April was a cruddy month for me (as I just blogged about). May is getting back into form and on track. I still have bronchitis, but with cough-medicine in-hand (and ultimately ingested), I'm planning to work through the coughing!!

Hope everyone's been well!!

And yes, I promise to get the next challenge rolling very very soon. I know what I want people to do .. .just have to figure out the points for each item.

LOL - thanks for all the links Cahibomom!!! They were most appreciated!!

Yes, today I turned 50. Or, as has been plastered on balloons and signs around my house today: "Nifty Fifty" and "Oh-No!! The Big 5-0".

But I have to say, I haven't felt so great since (healthy, fit and overall happy) since I think I was 18 (when I was last at this level of fitness). So turning 50 was quite the pleasant experience.

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes!!

You are right Alan. I should just focus on the things I can control. I am usually pretty good with keeping the work stress out of my personal life but I am struggling with it this time.

Will try and get my exercise minutes first thing in the morning. I am not a morning person but I will force myself to change that for the next couple of months - maybe it will become a habit.

I am in the finance industry too....used to work for a small bank which has now been bought over by one of the big banks.

I hear ya 4GAYATRI - all too well. My company (a company in the same industry as AIG) has gone through 2 waves of layoffs. I'm one of those who remain, but it seems there's more work to be done than before and obviously fewer people. It's why I was going through 16-hour work days for the last several weeks - making sure projects get completed as per original deadlines, even though there aren't enough people (aka "human resources") around to get the job done on time.

(BTW, I'm in IT also, managing several departments - it's become a project/program management nightmare).

Anyway ... I take a different view of the eating and exercise - I use them as my rock to remind me that I have control over some aspects of my life. And there's nothing more stress-relieving for me than working up a sweat. As tired as I was with those long days, I still got in my 2 - 3 hours of cardio/ST each day. It's the only way I stayed sane. I suspect you know how good it feels to be on track (by way of challenges, etc...). Maybe you should try that approach - as tough as it is sometimes to watch what we're eating or find the time to exercise, it *is* an aspect of our lives we absolutely can control. So let the control of eatign and exercise help get you over the hump/despair of the workplace.

And no apologies for venting - it's a very healthy thing to do. And that's why we have this team - you know you have people who'll listen.

Hang in there!!

Alan

I am in real trouble....have been adding and losing the same 1-2 lbs in the last few weeks. Taking part in the challenge helped a lot and I don't want to slip again.

emoticon

I think the my work life is affecting my real life. Maybe I am just making excuses but here is what is happening....

My company was bought over and nearly everyone in our IT dept. is being laid off. That in itself is not the problem....the severance pkg will be good, we have enough saved up and my husband's job is going great. The problem is we all have to stay for the transition/conversion period which started in January and will last for another 2-4 months. So, there is a lot of work to be done but people are of course not very enthusiastic about it. I would call the work atmosphere poisonous. People are worried and stressed out. A lot of unhappy people - some are bitter because they are not among the 10-15% who managed to keep their jobs, others are unhappy because they are working longer hours as more and more people are leaving. I am not sure whether to feel sorry for those who are leaving or for those who are staying.

By the time I get home....I am mentally exhausted and have to really work on eating healthy and getting the exercise. I don't always succeed. I can't wait for this to be over(hopefully by June) so that I can get on with my life.

Sorry...just needed to vent and what better place than this. emoticon

I wish I could get outside! This week the weather took another turn for the cold and it's ranging around -10 celcius all week, with crazy winds like 40 km/hr! We just can't win.

On my bright side, when it IS nice enough, my parents bought my daughter a playset for their deck (and yard once the snow melts) that has a swing and a slide.

It's so nice to decide to go outside ... and just go aside (no bundling up required!). We went to a waterpark this weekend and spent a healthy amount of time at the park. Weather was gorgeous this weekend. The rain waited until today to show up!

Hey Katie - Busy morning for me. Attended my oldest DS first baseball game this season. The sun was shinning bright, but it was still 35 degrees out. Luckily, the wind wasn't blowing. When DS wasn't playing, I went for a walk....climbed an unbelievable steep hill. By the time I got to the top (1/2 mile), my heart was pumping out of my chest and I was drawing in raw freezing air something fierce. Good cardio...

What's everyone else up to?

Katie - Ultimately, its whatever works for you. Trackers work for some (like me) and for others, it's just a pain in the butt. You've been off the tracking wagon since November, but you also have been dropping the pounds ... so I guess not tracking is the way to go for you. Keep up the great work - with or without tracking!!

Cahbomom - LMAO... I'm really not sure if its a girl thing or not, but I know my daughter has been calling me a girl because I have been somewhat fascinated that my body looks the way it does now!! I mean, the last time my body was even close to being in the shape it was now was after my freshman year in college when I shed the "Freshman-30" and got back to my soccer-playing weight. Of course then I did the "Sophomore-40" and the rest - up until I took my life back into control - is history. But yeah, with every few pounds or more toning/bulking up the clothing size changes a bit. I think I've hit my limit size-wise on pants. I was a 32" waist when I was a fit-teenager, and I'm a 32" waist now. Not bad considering 17 months ago I was a 54+" waist. The shirts are what's scaring me. I pretty much wear a "large" in all my shirts (which are basically polos, t-shirts, or soccer jerseys), but I accidentally put on one of my wife's "medium" t-shirts and it fit (in a slightly-snug, show-off-the-abs-and-chest way). I'm not sure what scared me more: that I was able to fit into the medium, or that my wife threatened to divorce me if we wound up wearing the same size clothing!! :-)

As for the snow, we got about a foot on Long Island, and a foot where I work (Stamford, CT) and even though the highways were supposedly clear yesterday, my local streets were no plowed, so I decided to work from home. I'm annoyed though - REALLY wanted to go outside and make snow-angels (haven't done that in years) and got caught up with work and forgot to. Maybe tonight...

I stopped using the nutrition tracker... I fell off the wagon in November, and I think part of it was because I was getting frustrated with how much time Spark was taking, and most of it was the nutrition tracker. Now that I came back to Spark in January, I use the articles, message boards, videos and fitness tracker, but I don't even look at the nutrition tracker. I find I'd rather focus on the fitness aspect than the "diet" aspect... I already rarely eat above 2000 calories, and my range is around 1700 that I'm "allowed" to eat, so I can guage myself how I'm doing without spending an hour a day entering every little thing into the tracker.
BUT it does work for some people!!! I'm not doubting that.. especially at the beginning I was glad to know how much I was actually putting into my body.

Cahibomom, we're supposed to be getting a little bit of snow today, but that's not unnheard of since I live in Saskatchewan, Canada... we've had snow on Easter before. Heck, we've had snow in MAY before... though it's not as common.
I'd rather have the snow than the bitter cold... it always seems warmer when we're getting snow. Much rather have snow coming down and it be -10 Celcius, instead of bitter cold winds and no snow.. like the -30 Celcius weather we were getting a couple weeks ago.

RAINDOGMA - Welcome... Glad to know that you've stuck around and have benefited from using the trackers. I've found them to be great. From what I've gathered, those that use them seem to do better in the longrun.

KATIE - What fun finding pants in a smaller size!!!

ALAN - You keep dropping the weight, too. Do you have as much fun when you see the need to buy pants in a smaller size??? Or, is it a girl-thing?

How are the rest of you doing?? Any snow?? We dodged the bullet in NE PA. We only got 4". That's not too bad. just enought to shovel. I'm assuming that Alan's was digging himself out this morning, since he wasn't the first one to huddle today.

Hey everybody... just wanted to introduce myself. You pulled me in with the March Challenge and so there. Here I am. I have been sparking since August and I love the tools. I am most successful when I log all of my food each day. I have just begun to log exercise. I have been on a stinking plateau all of February and really want to power on through it.

Luckily for me... I am partnered with JNNSALAS.

Have a great day!

I just want to say that I am in LOVE! The clothing store I buy all my dress/work clothes (and some casual but dressier) amazed me today. I went in to look, and found the cutest pair of semi-dressy/semi-casual looking black pants. The salesgirl said they call them "miracle pants" there, because you literally drop sizes in them. The salesgirl is usually a size 16 and she can wear a 12 in these pants!!!

I only just started fitting into my size 10's from this store, that I bought 2 years ago. They are snug but I can wear them to work comfortably. I tried on these so-called "miracle pants" in a size 10 and they were SO baggy at the waist, I had to get a size 8!!! Talk about a boost in confidence!
Hee hee I like being able to say that I'm wearing a size 8!

I've been in the same "too busy to do everything on SP I need to do" mode. My company just closed their financial quarter, the process of which I'm intimately involved with (and lol - not "intimate" in a good way :-). I'm lucky if I'll really see the light of day until the end of March. But a good challenge always helps keep me here :-)

Jenn - if you need any help, let me know.

JNN - we're all waiting with baited breath to see what you've come up with for the next challenge!!

I've been working long hours at work since I returned from Xmas break. My first deadline on this project is due next week and hopefully things will slow down a bit from there. A challenge might be a good idea to keep me on track.

Life's been pretty crazy the past week. Had to put some extra hours in at work getting a financial package finished up, and have run out of energy by the time I'm home.

Jenn, Just like you, I've been checking in and logging my nutrition, but haven't had any time to chat. I'm ready for another challenge. As usual, I've let my fitness efforts fall by the wayside. Need to step it back up and make sure I'm getting my 30 mins. in.

Picked this up from another team... It's too good not to share.
Valentine Day Gift idea????? emoticon

Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife.
A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this:

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was
our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse- sized tazer. The effects of the tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....??

WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA batteries in
the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed
the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

AWESOME!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.
Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently
(trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the
bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second
burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms
and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on
the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in
circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to
myself, 'no possible way!' What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.. .?
I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head coc ked to one side as to say, 'don't do it
dipsh**,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that
bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . .

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HE**!!!
I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body
slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in
the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipp les on fire, nut s nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a tazer, one note of caution: there is no such
thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is
dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.. A three second burst would be
considered conservative?

IT HURT LIKE HE**!!!

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits
(what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nip ples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling.
Apparently I poop ed on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nut s and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!

P.S... My wife, can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!

LOL ... so you become the reigning Queen of the Challenge and then go and disappear, huh?! :-):-)

Well, welcome back!!! Sounds like you've enjoyed yourself (the obscene work hours aside) while away at least. And isn't that what it's ultimately about - being able to enjoy life!?

Anyway... like I said, welcome back!! And um, when are you putting the kissing video(s) on youtube for us to watch????

Hey Peeps! I'm back... Wow - I didn't mean to be gone for so long. I finished that challenge and just ran for the hills! What have i been doing?

1) Lots of work. Generally, I can get my work into a normal work week. But for the last 10 days, it's been work, work, work from 7:30 - 4 and then 7 - 11PM. CRAZY!

2) I perform with an improv company and we were hired to create 15 videos reenacting famous movie kisses (don't worry - in mine, we really didn't kiss - just looked like it - don't worry hubby!). So that was fun but insane how much work it took. I was going to send you the links so you all could vote for me (they paid us to increase the submissions for an online contest) but then I thought that i didn't really want your first impression of me to be in a parody video kissing my fellow performers. Especially because one of the scenes was from a horror movie...

3) My best friend got married! it was awesome. It was like 50 degrees in Chicago on Saturday and we were all running around in our sleveless dresses with no coats. Speaking of the dress - while yes it looked nice and I felt good - wow - it gave me a big kick in the butt that I still have a long way to go. Which leads me to...

4) I signed up for a marathon! Wow! It's a non-competitive walking marathon but a marathon nonetheless. My friends from Chicago are doing it with me and training starts later this month.

5) While I haven't been on SP, I haven't given up! I was so stressed that I made myself meet up with friends at the gym and found out that I love running. Not all the time but doing short bouts durinig my treadmill workout. Love it! It really helped me with all the stressed recently.

Good news - work is relaxed again and I'm back to SP. I've been thinking of all of you and miss you terribly!

xoxo

Sheila -- Just got that sunshine and warmer weather you sent us. Came through this weekend and it's still hanging around, and I'm soooooo enjoying it. Today almost felt like spring. Hopefully, the sun will stay. There's still a lot of snow and ice that needs to melt.

How are you doing... Everyone, still hanging in there?

I'm doing well so far today. 64 ounces down, and it's only 3 pm. (That's an achievement for me.) I just kept raising the water bottle while watching my kids' 3 basketball games this morning. Eat a complete veggie/fruit lunch and I'm off to the treadmill this afternoon.

Update: 130 mins on the treadmill today. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Um.... I know the I-80 route well, all 5 hours of it. And, as an added bonus... I know the other 6 hours across Ohio and Indiana all too well. If you're headed over to the Ludington, MI area, hop on the ferry and it will almost take you to JNN's neck of the woods. (Okay, you'll be in Wisconsin, and still have to drive another 3+ hours. But, I'm sure JNN would love a drop-in visit. Of course, I'm not sure the ferry runs this time of year.) Can say ROAD TRIP????

I haven't been affected yet ... icy, slushy, disgusting mess outside on Long Island, but I stayed home to finish up the college financial aid applications. I'm hoping things don't freeze up either - I'll actually be heading across NE PA (and N PA, and NW PA) en route to Michigan tomorrow. I hate I-80 in PA and there's only about 400 miles of it to drive through. As long as it's dry (or at least not frozen), I'll be okay, and continue to be unaffected by the weather.

Enjoy the rest of the week everyone. I'll try to post something while on the road!!

Capitalized on the extra snow and ice today. Came home and shoveled/broke-up the ice on the driveway for 30 minutes. Definitely a work-out. It was a nice change.

Is there anyone on the team that's been greatly effected by the recent storm? So far, NE PA has lucked out. Tomorrow may be a different story, when all the wet snow freezes tonight.

Yolanda, The food tracker is an excellent tool. Don't let it overwhelm you. It definitely gets easier once you get the hang of it. I use it everyday, and find it very benefical in knowing what I'm actually eating. From it, I've learned to make healthy choice, and use the tracker to confirm that what I ate is OK and fits in my calorie range.

Remember, to holler out with your questions....

This evening I love all of you, your encouragement has been so wonderful I feel every hug but new medicine three pound weight gain, ugh
I must lose 30 pounds before they will consider replacing my knee and it is so painful I want it done but what do I do

Maybe someone will walk me through the food tracker I originally had them provide a menu but there was alot of food on the menu every day and I could not do it and got spooked.
I would like to put my own food in but when I tried I failed. Please someone walk me down that lane.

My weight loss journey (if I can call it that since it has only been five months) has been pretty slow too. As others have said:
It is not all about the weight loss. It is about eating better, exercising and getting healthier. Of course we want the weight to come off and it will, even if it doesn't happen as quickly as we want it to.

Yolanda-
My meds make it hard for me to lose weight too so I know your frustration. I just keep in mind that even though the weight may not be coming off, I am making better choices that are better for my body. Even if the weight never comes off (which I hope it does) I am living a much better life. I feel better, both physically and mentally. I know this is what is best for me.

Keep with the program. You will see results. Remember, you are worth this!

Yolanda,

Success #1: You haven't quit!!! That's remarkable. Too many do, when they become frustrated.

Success #2: You haven't gained any additional weight. From your tracker, it looks like you've lost 4 pounds. Considering your situation with your meds, that's remarkable.

Success #3: You're reaching out and letting us provide the encouragement and support you need when you're down. If you run a hospice, your a VERY STRONG person. You can do this!!! Stay true. Look forward, and pat yourself on the back for what you're doing... your commitment.

Success #4: You here!!! and we love it. Together, we're less venerable to self doubt. Stay positive. You are worth it.

I haven't found the answer to success to be any one particular thing or easy fix. (If it only were....) Consider tracking your food intake and see how you do compared to your calorie range. SP has some great strength videos that I've fallen in love with, which can be toned up/down depending upon your particular situation. The videos are only 10 minutes long, and fairly easy to work into our crazy lifestyle. Hopefully, the others will have suggestion for you too.

Hang in there.... You're worth it!!!!!
