Afternoon Brenda, :-)

I sure know what you mean, when you say you are afraid of the water.

When I was 9 years old and was in the 1972 flood (Hurricane Agnes) that hit the "Northeastern Pennsylvania". We lived in the Wyoming Valley, 2 miles from the dikes that held back the Susquehanna River.

Needless to say we lost everything.

I'm now 47 and every time we get rain for more then 3 days I get scared. It's just something that made a impact on my life and I will never forget the fear of that night.

Even though we don't live anywhere near there now. I live in the Pocono Mountains----the fear is still with me.

You can do a "Google Search" and see the destruction.

I feel for anyone that has or had to suffer the fate of a flood or any kind of disaster, it's something that you never get over.

Have a "Great Day"

Hi AXREAH,

Our weather is also yucky. A huge wind/rain storm is on the way, scheduled to hit here later on this afternoon. Ocean waves are supposed to get 35 ft high. We are two hours from the beaches. The water scares me more than the trees. We are in the Chehalis Valley right in the flood zone where the rivers overflow. I'm stocked up on food in case the stores flood, which happens quite often in the winter. The lumber yard across the street will flood but our building is on higher ground so I don't worry about that.

Have a good weekend.

Hi Brenda,
WTG on your walking, it doesn't matter where or how you do it----as long as your getting that exercise in, that's all that counts :-)

Seems Isabelle' and I are on the same wavelength. Somehow during my cleaning escapade, I tweaked my knee. So I have put my cleaning on hold, for the next few days---probably until Monday. I sure don't need knee problems.

Isabelle' is feeling a bit better, but I sure don't want to push her either. We will both be housebound.

The weather yesterday and today is YUCKY, so I'm not missing anything. The wind is terrible, the trees whipping around really scares me. I feel better staying indoors, when it's like this out there.

Have a "Great Weekend"

Hi AXREAH,

I don't know where all the other's are. Anyway, I really miss the little woodstove I had at my last apartment. It was the 'party room' adjacent to the garage, 16' x 24' that I rented when I first found myself alone after my husband's stroke and he went to assisted living. It was my main source of heat because the wall heater was too expensive to use. It would be cold in the mornings but didn't take long to heat up the room. I was there for two years and two months, then I moved here.

I hope your dog's leg heals fast. He probably twisted it somehow.

I just do my walking indoors in the halls and stairways. Three trips around one hall is a mile. I'm on the third floor and mostly use the stairs.

Have a good day.

Hi Brenda & Friends,

Nothing new here, getting out walking. Unfortunately today, no walk. Seems Isabelle', somehow tweaked her front leg and is limping, so we are homebound for the next few days. I won't go without her, her heart would be broken. :-(

It's okay though, I started my fall cleaning and it takes me quite a few days. We have a lot of wood in our home and I wipe it all down with Murphy's Oil Soap----very time consuming.

It's gotten cold here, as well. However, I told DH, "No way are we starting up the furnace yet!" I refuse to give those oil companies an extra cent! So we are burning our fireplace, it keeps it toasty in here all day, even through the evening. However, the mornings are a bit chilly, until we fire it up, once again.

Matter of fact that is were I'm headed now. To clean out the fireplace, pick up some kindling from the woods, start a fire and then start my cleaning---once again. :-)

Have a "Great Day & Week" :-)

Hi Everyone,

I got well just in time to go set up for my yard sale down at the community center down the street. I did pretty good and also got really tired from being sick the week before. I'm ready for the next one the first weekend in November. We are having a craft sale here at my apartment complex that same Saturday so my friend will sell my doll dress pot holders here for me so I can be at the big sale.

I've had to turn on my little ceramic heater the last few days. It may freeze tonight so I picked my tomatoes. I'm not ready for this cold weather. We barely had a summer so no one got many tomatoes in our area. A Master Gardner will speak here about container gardening, which is what we all do here on our balcony's so that will be interesting.

I'm going to hit the rack now so you all have a good week.

Great walk this morning, we beat the rain and did 4.19 miles in 66 minutes.

Nothing really to see, just the leaves coming to their full colors now and it really is pretty. It's hard to believe that in about 2 weeks the tress will be bare and winter will be arriving soon.

Hi Brenda,

Happy your feeling better. I hate being sick!

Hey Mom,

The weather has been GREAT here, as well. We got hit with frost last night.
I tried to see if there were any mushrooms popping this morning, but I didn't see a one.
This summer killed us for the mushroom season, too dry and I LOVE going picking. I look forward to it every fall.

We have been having beautiful weather here. But supposed to have frost tonight, I am not ready for that. I had planted some roses this summer and covered them tonight.

I live on the West Coast, WA State. Rains storms are moving through the last couple days but at least it isn't as cold as it was. Some areas are under flood watches along the rivers. We are in the valley and it usually floods every year--some years worse than others. Last year was pretty calm.

I am almost over the crud, even getting my appetite back now so I have a chicken and a roast baking so I won't have to do much cooking the next week. I do a lot of portioning and freezing.

Have a good week.

Now it's just plain cold and I'm sick. I don't like this at all. We are supposed to have the worst winter in 50 years so yesterday I went to Walmart and stocked up on everything I think I may need when I can't get out. If it floods, all the stores get flooded too so I plan for any disaster as well as I can.

I lost two pounds so far this week wighout really trying so that is a good thing.

Have a good weekend.

Isabelle' and I haven't been out for a walk in days! It's been raining here since Monday. Hopefully tomorrow will be nice and we can get out.

We sure needed the rain, but not all at once----I even feel depressed. YUCK!

Today is a really nice day, although a little chilly, the sun is out and my tomatoes are ripening nicely. I'm hoping the nice days stay long enough for the rest of them to ripen, then I can clean out the pots. I have a balcony garden because I live in a huge apartment complex. I miss having a yard to work in.

On the walking front. :-)

Isabelle' and I got out for a 3.25 mile walk this morning. What a nice morning. The leaves are really starting to turn now, I think the rain the past two days helped (we still need more though).

We saved 2 woolly caterpillars, the black and copper kind. I think I scared them both, one pee'd in my hand and the other----well did number 2! I wonder if that brings good luck??? LOL!!!

Isabelle' saw a hawk, she sat in the middle of the road. At first I thought it was the geese already, but I didn't hear them----then I saw the hawk. Just soaring above us, they truly are beautiful and soo...graceful to watch. I think we both could just watch them forever. :-)

That was all for today. We probably won't be getting out tomorrow. It's suppose to rain, starting after midnight tonight and go until early Friday morning. Everything needs it desperately, it's been a very dry summer here.

Happy Trails :-)

Brenda,

You are sooo...right, when I was growing up, there was a home cooked meal on the table after school and my mother was there all day, every day. She didn't work, she took care of the house, us, cleaning, etc.

No we didn't have the best clothes (a lot of hand me downs from cousins) or the best cars. We had what most don't have now, respect for all, morals and values. That's what we grew up with, not all the expensive toys, clothes, cars, homes, etc. Those are just THINGS to try to impress WHO???

Nowadays, everyone is trying to keep up with the Jones's (so to speak), living way beyond their means.

There is a place by us (about a 45 minute drive) and the houses are simply gorgeous and HUGE! These homes range between $250,000 & $500,000. Dream homes for some, not for me----give me our little Chalet that over looks the river, all of 1200 square feet and I'm happy here, amongst all of nature :-)

Anyway, (sorry I got side tracked) we had our furniture re-upholstered and the man who did it, was telling us about all those homes. He said, "I've been in quite a few of them and they are all the same. No furniture, no beds, no dressers, etc. Nothing. These people only live in a shell. They sleep on a mattress, on the floor. Their furniture consists of those plastic chaises and chairs. They spent sooo...much for the home, that they can't afford anything else once they pay their mortgage."

Now that is sad. Talk about being self-absorbed? They only care about what others see and not about who they on the inside----literally.

Society is in for a rude awakening. However, I don't see it happening just yet. I think it will take a few more rounds of recessions. Then it might just hit home and those people will FINALLY wake up. Hopefully, it won't be too late.

I totally agree with everything you say. I was writing a post a few minutes ago and it disappeared into the ozone. I hate it when I hit a wrong key.

The main thing wrong with the younger generation is there is no one home watching the children. Daycare is raising the children. People need to learn to live within their means and forget about trying to have everything right now instead of getting things as they can afford them. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get my drift.

Have a good day.

Hi Mariam

It makes you sick---doesn't it??? You pay taxes and all, yet no one will do anything.

This world is just out of control, too many without morals and brains. It seems everyone is just running around doing their own thing and could care less about anyone or anything.

It saddens me, because I know as I get older things are only going to get worse. To be honest, I don't want to live a long life, because I don't want to see or experience the devastation that the future will bring. It's truly scary.

What happened to respect for all, morals, values, humility---I could go on and on. It might sound terrible, but some of the children and young adults growing up nowadays actually frighten me----their behavior is so demented and cruel.

I do blame a lot on the games, news, TV shows, movies, etc. They show so much blood, gore, horror, language, sex (it all just sickens me) etc. that I actually do believe that children, young adults and even adults are just getting more and more desensitized.

We don't have children and when I hear horror stories on the news, I do sometimes "Thank God", because I just couldn't bare to think of bringing up a child in this world, nowadays. The worry, stress, etc. alone would be enough to kill me.

I give credit to all those parents out there that are raising children correctly, with discipline, morals and values. I can understand it's a hard job, but the rewards can be wonderful, when done correctly, with love, devotion and discipline.

Oh well, I guess not much we can do except keep moving forward----pray and hope for a positive change from our future generations.

On the outdoors front----Isabelle' and I haven't been out since Sunday, 2 days of much needed rain. Not enough though, we are in desperate need of a soaking rain for about 3 or 4 days.

Happy Trails :-)

Hi Isabelle

I can't believe your neighbor, I hate people who speed. Before we moved into town we lived on 10 acres boy do I miss that. Anyway our road was well maintained mainly because it was a school bus route. We had about 10 very small children living there. People use to speed all the time and I was always worried about someone or a animal being hit. And it did happen to much, family pets, deer rabbits you name it. I to called the police and was told that there was nothing that they could do. How frustrating is that.

Hi Friends,

Belle' and I didn't get out on Friday or Saturday. Friday I took her shopping to her favorite store :-) and Saturday the humidity was crazy.

However, Sunday (yesterday) we got out for 2.25 miles. The leaves are slowly changing now and it seemed more like Autumn as the air was crisp----no humidity :-)

Brenda,

Sorry to hear that your salad greens spoiled. I hate throwing food out.

"Thank You" for caring about the fawn---it means a lot to me :-)

On the police front. I did call the state police and they told me that I had to report it to our township supervisors first and they would have to call the state police, then the supers. would have to try to put a stop to the speeding.....it's just a long drawn out process.

However, I did call the TWP. Supers. and made them aware of what was going on in our small community. I was told that it will be brought up at the next meeting and they will see what they can do. In the meantime the Super. said he will keep me posted.

Far as a movie camera. I do carry my cell phone, hopefully I WON'T have to use it, but if I do I will! GREAT ADVICE! "Thank You" :-)

It saddens me, because the "Baby Furkid" had no one to stand up for her, so I'm doing my best and hoping for a good outcome, so this will NEVER happen again.

I must sound like a nut, but I just adore, respect and honor all of nature, from the trees to the littlest of creatures. I won't even kill a fly, if it's in the house, I capture it and take it outside.

I think majority of humans think that we could do whatever we please on this planet, without consequence----however, I believe their day will come. For some it can't come soon enough!

Well, I don't have to worry about the salad greens anymore because they spoiled. I think they were too old when we got them. I did get one good salad out of the bag.

Your neighbor sounds like a real jerk. She will end up hurting someone and then the police will intervene. I'm wondering if you can make a 'citizen's arrest'? If I were you, I would just call the State Police and tell them your story and maybe they will do something about her.

Do you have a movie camera? If so, you could record her illegal driving. I'm really sorry to hear about the fawn getting killed.

Isabelle' and I only got in a 1.71 mile walk this morning. I got in a argument with my neighbor about her speeding. It's 25 mph and she does 40 - 60.

I saw her the other day going about 40 - 45 and directly through a stop sign! When she turned and saw me standing on the corner, she was shocked and it seemed like she was trying to hide her face. She had a different car.

So I thought I would confront her on this today. Well she lied of course, said she wasn't going that fast and said she didn't go through the stop sign. This ticked me off all the more----I literally HATE liars and especially when you know the person is lying to your face! Grrr.....

Anyway a few minutes after she lied to my face and said that she didn't go through the stop sign, she said, "I go through that stop sign all the time, no one is ever there!"

Needless to say that ticked me off, so I said to her "If you DO NOT slow down I am taking it upon myself to call the State Police (we have no local police were I live), file a complaint against you, give them your name, address and tell them YOU are an endangerment to the community and it's people with your driving habits! Then you can take it up with them!"

Well, she got even more angry, used a few choice words and I just smiled and walked away.

Oh, wait until you here this part. There was a fawn killed on the road last Friday, the exact road that she was speeding through and I noticed over the weekend and the past few days, her car has been gone. My neighbor told me that she saw the car Friday afternoon and it looked like she hit something. I asked my neighbor what side and where. She said front right side. That would have been the exact side the fawn would have been hit on----it was laying on that side of the road.

I bet she hit it and then took her car right to the garage to get fixed. The car was there today and had no damage.

Let's just say, "I believe in Karma and it can't show fast enough for her!"

I'm really ticked, I just asked that she slow down and she acted like a raving maniac.

I really need to move to a location with about 10,000 acres of land and no one around at all. A place that I would have to call in a helicopter every so many months to do grocery shopping. I would LOVE it!

So that was my morning walk with Isabelle', not too enjoyable, hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Good Morning,

The Food Coalition dropped off cases of potatoes, cucumbers, apples, big bags of salad mix greens, and 50 pound bags of onions. This afternoon at 3 we are having a dinner made from them. It will be interesting to see what people come up with. I'm making apple crisp and sliced cucumbers and onions marinated in vinegar with a tiny bit of sugar. I had a huge salad for dinner last night. I added a boiled egg and tomatoes and shredded turkey. Yum! Of course my refrigerator was full to begin with because I'd been to the Farmer's Market the day before so I left everything in my shopping cart, covered it with a big black trash bag and put it out on the balcony. It got down to about 40 last night and will only get up to 55 today and it is supposed to rain off and on.
The leftover and over ripe stuff will go to the pig farm this morning so nothing will go to waste. Arlene took a cart and went around the building door to door delivering to residents who can't get out.

Questiion: Can I make soup stock out of the salad greens? It's spinach, red leaf lettuce and another kind of green leaf. I told some of the ladies to cook them but they say they can't be cooked. I'll never be able to eat them all before they spoil because it is a huge bag. I hate to waste food. Or: Can I run them through my juicer?

Have a good day.

Okay, so today, Isabelle' and I went for another walk (2.58 miles) down to the lake, didn't see much down there----a few hawks scanning the ground, that was all.

However, we did have quite a few rescues. Those white furry caterpillars were out in droves. I couldn't believe how many we saved from being squished on the road. I just hope they mean that we are going to have a winter like last year----a little more snow please. :-)

Happy Trails :-)

Brenda,

It sure feels like fall today! I actually opened my windows so that the warm air could warm the house! It was freezing in here today. BR....it's nice and warm now.

I agree the farmers had a bad season this year. Our county just issued drought warnings. Has me nervous, because we have a well. Not having rain----it's getting scary now.

Mariam,

Isabelle' is GREAT with the wildlife. I brought her up by telling her everything was a "baby" and she had to be nice. I just tell her "It's a baby, you be nice," and she just stands and watches.

Her favorites are birds though, she is a character. She actually plants herself on her butt in the middle of the road and watches the geese fly over.

She loves watching them---it is too funny. Even the neighbors look forward to the geese now, because they love watching her watching them :-)

Worms....I know what you mean, I've been seeing quite a lot of them here too.

Hi Brenda & Mariam,

I never thought much about walking around a store. Do people get in your way? I like to walk fast, I do anywhere from 15 to 17 minute miles. I think I would probably be plowing people over LOL!!!

"HONK, HONK!!! LOOK OUT HERE COMES AX!"

Also, I wouldn't be able to take my Isabelle' and I would feel terrible. :-(

Fall officially starts at 8:09 tonight. I love to watch the leaves change colors on the trees. Pumpkin growers are hoping for another 3-4 weeks of nice weather so the pumpkins will turn orange, otherwise they will be selling green ones. Too much rain here and not enough sun. Goofy weather this year. Now I'm wondering about the winter squashes growing around here, if they will ripen. It's hard on the farmers.

Hi Brenda

I like walking in stores and malls, people watching can be very interesting. I also park as far away from the entrance as possible, not only do I get a little more exercise but there is never a problem with parking emoticon

I've started walking around inside Walmart and if I want to go over to the other stores, I just leave the car and walk the couple blocks. I can't justify driving the car across the street. Walmart keeps moving things around to odd places that have nothing to do with the product I am looking for. I will go to every section looking for whatever and then if I can't find it I go to customer service to ask. Most floor people don't have a clue or they send me to the wrong section.

Hi Sandy,

The bear really aren't that bad here, no one feeds them, so they are relatively not social.

If one passes in front of us, we just slowly turn around and walk in the other direction.

It's not too often that we do see them and if they are out and about it's basically in the Spring and Fall.

I too LOVE this time of year. :-)

Afternoon Friends,

Isabelle' and I had another GREAT walk this morning 4.15 miles. She was like the energizer bunny and kept wanting to go and go. Needless to say, she is napping now :-)

We walked down to the lake and there we saw 2 Pileated Woodpeckers. They actually do laugh, just like woody----no kidding. Also, when they peck at a tree, it is sooo...loud at times, actually it sounds like a jack hammer.

When we first moved here, it took me quite awhile before I figured out what was doing the laughing and what was causing the sound like a jack hammer. :-)

Also, we saw a Doe in the woods, I just said "Good Morning" to her, as she stood watching Isabelle' and myself walk up the road. :-)

Well that's it for today :-)

Happy Trails :-)

Ax

Wow! You really do see a lot of wildlife! Sounds fantastic! I think I'd be scared of seeing a bear, but if you have a big dog - maybe not so bad. Glad to hear about your walks. I love this time of year, too.

I'm late getting here. Today is my busy workout day and I had to get some stuff done around here.

Isabelle' and I got out for a 3.51 mile walk. A nice cool, breezy morning.

We saw quite a lot of Turkey Vultures. They were nesting in the woods and I guess something scared them----all of a sudden they were flying through the woods and out in open space the road had provided for them. They are HUGE, and all you hear is WALP-WALP, as they flap their wings!

Isabelle' of course enjoyed watching them. She also LOVES watching the Geese fly over. As soon as she hears them, she looks up, finds them, sits on her behind in the middle of the road and just watches them until they are out of sight. She's done this since she was a pup. My girl just LOVES birds. :-)

Happy Trails :-)

It's literally a new day, every day---I LOVE it here---I live in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania.

We also, have wild turkeys. I laugh at them, because I have a bowl of water, I fill daily with fresh for all the critters and there are 2 turkeys that come 6 pm daily for a drink. They are like clockwork LOL!!!

You have to be very quiet though, as you watch them from our kitchen window, or they run like the wind. They are very skittish.

Also, the Momma deer and the fawns share a drink from the bowl. The fawns have now lost their spots, but they are still adorable.

I can actually say, "I'm honored to share a part of "God's Country" with all the critters."

Morning Mariam, :-)

Isabelle' and I got out for a 2.40 mile walk this morning.

We did save a few critters on the road (caterpillars and newts). I just don't have the heart to let them get run over by a car, so I help them reach their destination to the other side of the road. Call me crazy, but I just adore all kinds of nature and do my best to help and take care of it when possible. :-)

Also, I chatted with the neighbor and found out we just missed seeing a black bear, which tore down his bird feeder, once again.

I gave up long ago on the bird feeders, I just throw the seed on the ground and it's a free for all for the Chipmunks, Squirrels, birds, deer, bear and whoever else wants to snack.

That was about it for our morning walk. It was beautiful though---the sky was sooo...blue and clear! Simply gorgeous! :-)

Happy Trails,

Ax

Let's see last Thursday I saw my very first Coyote! Beautiful and I felt honored to FINALLY see one. I've been waiting for years, as I hear them down by the river, but I've never seen one. :-)

Today, I took notice of the many white furry caterpillars, they are so pretty. Pure white and they have little spikes of black fur sticking out here and there.

Last year when I saw them (first time ever), we had a "Wonderful Winter"! No ice, just cold and snow---I wish we got a little more snow, but anything is better then ice.

I'm hoping this is a sign that this winter will be the same. :-)

Hi All,

It's been quite awhile since I've been here. I didn't think the group was still up and running. Imagine my surprise when I visited and saw a few posts.

I would love to join your walking group, if you all don't mind.

I am an avid walker. I've been walking/hiking the Appalachian Trail Virtually now for almost 3 years. I only count outside miles, so it's all weather permitting. I walk with my Isabelle', she is my 5 year old Rottweiler.

We just got up to 1047 miles and we have exactly 7.32 miles to go and we'll FINALLY be in Pennsylvania (we started in Georgia). This is BIG for me, as it was my goal to reach PA, by the end of the summer. :-)

Maine seems very far off (that is were our journey will end), over 1000 miles. I just hope it won't be another 3 years! YIKES, 6 years of walking----now that's scary!

Glad to see a walking group starting. It really doesn't matter where we walk as long as we walk.

I am happy to see the bugs starting to go.

I'm in! I walked in the evening yesterday, and it was QUITE a bit cooler than even last week. First time in a long time that I needed a sweatshirt. But it felt SO good! Refreshing!

In the summer I look for bats during my evening walks, but I didn't spot any last night; must be the cooler weather.

I like the idea of a challenge too--but I do my walking in the pool, since that is where I exercise as well. I do some walking in my school and a bit outside, but I have to be careful with my walker and all.

I like the idea of incorporating the seasonal change as well--I hope someone can figure out how to put these ideas together, but if I can do it, i'll back this up.

A walking challenge is a good idea but I walk everyday in our building because there is no safe place around our complex to walk because we are next to a busy highway. Three trips around one hall is a mile plus there are three stories, I live on the 3rd floor and mostly take the stairs.

The leaves outside started turning red on some of the trees at the end of August.

Now that fall is fast approaching lets see if we can do a challenge to walk at least 3 times per week and keep a journal of what changes you notice on your walks. I did this morning and wow the leaves are changing slowly except there is one tree not far from my house that is almost all red. It's beautiful, love the fall colors. emoticon
