Hello team!! I am just waiting on a little extra dough so I can order some "GOOD" DVD's. I have Paul Katami, and I do want to purchase some better ones. Today I will be practicing my barefoot bell-less swing. I will be practicing my form. So no kettle bell. I want to perfect my form first. I hope you all have a swinging day!! Jen

I agree that "Enter the Kettlebell" is a great book. Pavel recently left the RKC arena and is now the leader of "Strong First".

That is a 8kg kb and should be the minimum you use. It is the smallest my instructor has at his gym. It may seem like a lot of weight, but remember that when you are swinging it, you do not swing with your arm muscles you swing with your lower body, the strongest muscles in your body. For 2 handed swings you should quickly go past the 8kg. But, the 8kg would still be good for a while for 1 armed swings and getups.

I hightly recommend that you read the book Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel. Pavel is the father of US kettlebells and his group certifies the top instructors in the country as RKC certified. I got it from my library. It is an easy read, but it is great book to give you a history of the bell and the basics on how to start and how to proceeed to the next level.

KBs is not about building muscles. In fact muscular people who change to KBs will often lose weight. Even above 18lbs your strenght will not be the bulging type, but the core type.

I have been taking classes for 4 months and although pricey, they are worth the price if you can find a RKC certified instructor. The instructor will not only make sure your technique is correct, but will make sure you do not get injured. KBs are not dangerous when done correctly. If not done correctly you can hurt yourself.

Even with all of that, I think they are the best thing you can do. I am 57 and they are getting me in the best functional strength I have ever been. I have eliminsted soreness in my bad knee and I am able to use and injured soldier more than I have in 12 years. Good luck.

Steve

Ive read - and reread the Kb challenge topic. Have been waiting to decide what would be my New years present to myself....................... so have decided on the 18 lb kettle bell to get started. Im 137 pounds.................... 5 '3" 59 years old. Fairly fit ---------------- Im a little concerned that this weight is just simply going to be too darn heavy to start with but i will try since that is the firm recomendation.

Im much less interested in losing pounds - than I am in toning and losing body fat. I have a regular power walking cardio routine and eat reasonably healthy. Always room for improvement there.......... but need to metl some fat - and so I know a change is needed for this new year. I have an 8 pound kb that I was working with last year.......................... I like the workout and understand the basics of a "good swing". Am ready to learn a solid foundation for a very good swing - and then workout 3x per week as recommended. Im not going to invest in a DVD just yet............ there are enough good ones on Youtube by the recommended instructors for free.

Ready - set - go

I do Halos once in a while (when I remember) and cleans--as long as it doesn't involve swinging the kettlebell. My hip, which has been diagnosed as arthritic, doesn't bother me much anymore. I've been doing JM's 30 Day Shred every other day. And I no longer need to take megadose RX of Ibuprofen anymore for the hip. It twinges, but nothing bad. I don't want to aggravate it yet with swings. It's my right knee bothering me now! I injured it back in the 80s when I leg-pressed way too much weight. Argh.

I hope everyone who posts here is doing well!

Oh, no! I'm so sorry. That's a major drag.

Do what you can, when you can. You can still work some upper body moves (halos, sitting "round the worlds") to keep that up. Good luck and speedy healing to you!

well my kettle bell workouts came to a screeching halt. Went on vacation and on a bike ride I locked up the front brakes and went right over the handle bars................. broke my foot in 3 places. Im in a cast and wish I c ould come up with upper body workouts with my kb I could do sitting down. I need upper body strength anyway.

Hi, I am doing well. I train more frequent now, but shorter. I did the test for myself :) RKC snatch test - I am starting doing 50 to see how much time it takes, and with surprise I did it in 2 minutes. I'm gonna try 100 on Saturday.

My training is different now. I don't do sessions, I just hit i.e. 10 snatches each hand before breakfast. At work run upstairs, no lift. Back home 30 pushups, and a bit later anything with or without kettlebells. Seems it works wonders. I'm gradually stronger.

Bryboy (and others),
I Saw the post on calories burned. Remember, you have to do exactly what the study participants were doing with the same KB weight to get their results (or close to it, your age, your weight, all that figures into it also).
The study www.acefitness.org/getfit/studies/Ke
tt
lebells012010.pdf
describes exactly what the participants were doing and with which size KB weights.
What the participants did is not something most people can do for an hour (I have heard of a couple of top RKC instructors being able to work out at that level for that long but it is rare and they talk about how hard it is).
To figure out your calories burned, use a heart rate monitor. This will not include the after burn (muscles recovering) but gives you a more accurate number than 1200 calories an hour.

The kettlebell workshop went well. She is a RKC trainer and really helped us understand our form. Unfortunately it is a 45 minute drive so I doubt I will be taking wkly lessons. I will probably drop in periodically to learn more movements.

Hi , I find KB to be brilliant for fitness and toning but confused as to how many calories they use. I read an article this week stating you burn over 1000 an hour. Can this be true?

Hello all! Have recently joined SP and have just joined this group. Discovered kb 5 weeks ago and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Taking classes from certified instructor that teaches at my gym and out of her home gym. I can already see improvements - flexibility and core are better and I can now touch the floor! and can also see the start of definition in my arms.

The kettlebells I bought came with a DVD. I realized this wasn't anything I wanted to guess at. I really want to learn the art form/proper way of it.

I just found how kettlebell workouts are efficient. Three weeks ago I couldn't do turkish getup with left hand, and barely one or two with right one. Today I had no problems with both, and did 5 per side ( 44 lbs kettlebell ). Very happy anyway emoticon

For anyone looking to get a good deal on kettlebells This site has them on sale until Sept 30. I just ordered 2. For ME shipping was only about $15. (I did only order the blue 12 kg, and the 14 kg ones)
THese are the same that are used at the live class taught by a certified trainer here in my area.

Mike - I don't remember which one Sarah uses in the Vol 1 anymore. But I know in the Warrior 1 and Bootcamp ones she uses a 25 lb bell and it's the "go fit" brand. The warrior 2 workout uses 2 bells.

I will be giving this to my Mom for Christmas. She is 73 and does some form of aerobics everyday. She can run circles around all of us grown kids and grandchildren. However she is hunting for something to help tone her Mid section up more and I think this will be perfect for her.

this one. It looks like for beginners, but it rocks.

Anyway, maybe anyone knows what kettlebell is used in this DVD ?

I read the main post on this site and took the suggestions to heart and decided to ditch the Danskin workout and Paul Katami

I just received my copy of "The ultimate Body sculpt and conditioning with Kettlebells by Lauren Brooks that I ordered from on the edge fitness. I cannot wait to get home and try it.

I ordered this Friday evening - did not pay extra postage and I got it today - that is awesome service.

I concur. Andrea Du Cane's "Kettlebell Boomer" is perfect for anyone just starting out with kettlebells, regardless of age. Andrea teaches the basics, but it is also a dvd that you can use as you advance. The "students" range from beginner to advanced so that you can follow the person that most fits your skill level.

Debfromhouston, what Songs415 said!

Despite being too young to qualify as a baby boomer, I did a Boomer workshop with Andrea Du Cane and think that the Boomer Kettlebell DVD is a must-have for anyone over 35 that is not an athlete and starting out with kettlebells.

Debfromhouston, look for people who are RKC. Lisa Shaffer, Lauren Brooks, Andrea DuCane, Look up Dragon Door. They have a list of instructors for each state.

Need suggestions. I am new to Kettle Bells. I bought a 10lb one at Walmart and it came with the Danskin Workout - from reviews it is said she does not teach the moves correctly. I did fine an online community that teaches kettle bells also and was wondering if someone who has knowledge could tell me if they teach it safely. I am 54 yrs old and do not need back injuries.

Just got done doing my first 10 min. kb workout!
It was fun. My heart rate went up and I felt it in my hamstrings, also could feel my stomach muscles being used. I walked 1 mile afterwards with my Leslie Sansone dvd.
Felt like a good start. I used a Tracy Riefkind dvd. It's called Give & Take.

Tomorrow I'll just walk and use the kb every other day!

I see alot of posts recommending a lesson or two with a certified instructor. Does anyone know of such a person in the Oakland/Bay Area?

Still swingin'. Switched from evenings to mornings, and from 12 kg to 16, so I dropped from eight sets to five (8 minutes, not counting warmup, a few practice cleans, and so forth). Adding one set per week seems to have worked well, so I should be back up to speed by mid-May. Form's getting better; while I think I'm getting good power from my hips and have taken my back out of the lift, I'm not locking out as consistently as I should be (though it's far better than it was two weeks ago, and I'm getting more altitude on my swings as a result).

More swings yesterday, still trying to not swing through my quads or pull up with my back. I think I have two main issues to resolve:

1) I may need a heavier bell for swings than for presses. I thought I might, so I already have one on order.
2) I need to learn when to stop. It's easy to dismiss one or two jerky reps and think I can get back on track because I still have plenty of energy left.

It sounds as though you're having the same problem that I did when I started. Even light weight stressed my lower back. Once my form was corrected, I started to feel it in my glutes and hamstrings. You must be on the right track, lol.

Did my second swing session yesterday. On the first one (last Thursday), I was still trying to squat the weight halfway down before moving my hips, which resulted in working my lower back more than it should have. So I watched a few more demos, practiced the form drills, and I think I did a lot better this time, because my back feels great and my hamstrings are killing me.

I had planned on twelve minutes of :30 on/ :60 off, similar to the ETK Program Minimum, but my form started breaking down at the end of my fourth set, so I called it a day. I think my goal for the rest of this semester (now through May 15) is to add one interval each week until I'm up to the full twelve minutes (eight intervals). That should work out nicely, because it'll also give me time to build up to a 25-35 pound getup, and once the semester's done, I can start on a proper Program Minimum.

After you mentioned Sara I did a little research and she is more than qualified. I even ordered her dvd and ebook. I appreciate you making me aware of her. I'm studying Z-Health myself, so I found that particularly interesting. So far the ebook is really good, and I'm looking forward to getting the dvd. Yes, poor old Bob Harper. He has good intentions, but he should really stick to yoga, lol. I'll be sure to post a review of Sara's dvd when I get it.

Sara is a Sr RKC and Master Z health... I always thought she rocked.. and then hooked up with Lauren and I knew she rocked!! LOL

I read the DVD thread... I don't think I have anything to contribute but YIKES... LOL sounds like y'all handled it with grace and perhaps it's over (?).. regardless, to each his/her own but then again I'm on the RKC Kettlebell team because I have a prejudice towards it.. I too love Bob Harper but did you see him to a get up?? it was hooooorrrrrible.. and I LOVE bob... would love bob to train me.. uhhhhh we just wouldn't be doing get ups! LOL

I'm not familiar with Sara Cheatham, but you've chosen two of the best in Lauren Brooks and Andrea Ducane. All of Lauren's dvds are great and I particularly like Andrea's newest one, "The Kettlebell Boomer". The conversation about Lisa Balash is under the dvd section. I'd love to have your feedback.

Well, I don't know where the conversation about Lisa Balash and Lauren Brooks was but I just youtubed Lisa and Lauren... their teaching approaches couldn't be more different... interesting.. and it would be helpful if I saw them swinging similar bell weights.. but, personally, I'm a Lauren Brooks fan... she's got the power.. I also like Andrea Ducane... and Sara Cheatham

Perhaps some of you have been following along with the discussion that we are having with our new member ALPHAQUEEN27 about kettlebell instructor Lisa Balash. Today, through the wonders of Windows 7 (I'm computer illiterate), I was able to pull up two videos side-by-side. The links were provided by our valued team member LORRAINEG57, and gave demonstrations of the two-handed swing by Lauren Brooks, aka kbqueen, and Lisa Balash, aka kbbombshell. If anyone ever made the mistake of thinking that a swing, is a swing, is a swing, I invite you to make the same comparison that I did. It was truly amazing.

Also, a shout out goes to Master RKC Mark Reifkind. Mark opened the first-ever studio in the US dedicated to kettlebell training, nine years ago. Girya Strength is located in Palo Alto, CA. We also know the Reifkinds for Marks dvd "Lats: The Super Muscles", and wife/RKC instructor Tracy's ground-breaking video "Programming the Kettlebell Swing". Congratulations! Thank you for both for your dedication and your willingness to share yourselves with the rest of us.
