I do not enjoy having to face cleaning a dirty bathroom!

So, I wipe all three bathrooms down daily (whether they have been used or not in the past twenty- four hours) & give them all a top to bottom cleaning twice weekly. Doing this makes it so there are never truly dirty, so I never have to face cleaning a dirty bathroom. emoticon

I am having renovations done on my house. I am on vacation and headed home for a couple of days. When the renos are done I will have a major clean to do.

I listen to audio books and download them for free over the internet. I listen to the books when I am cleaning the kitchen, etc.

I hate cleaning the Venetian blinds (slatted blinds) so I found a professional On-Site cleaning company to do it for me and then found I would be overseas so I didn't even have to be there to let them in - my son was housesitting! I just had to do the necessary online to make payment - painfree! And I'll be going back to clean blinds - then I can make an appointment for the window cleaners - inside and out - another job I loathe - small cottage pane windows - not at all conducive to squeegee things!

I hate to wash clothes because the washers are on another floor. I wash smaller amounts and it doesn't take as much time with the drying and folding so it appears to be easier.

Here's what I do...
I only do the windows in this weeks zone.
In my house that is no more than 1 or 2 windows a week. I vacuum the screens & give the windows a shine inside & out - the whole process doesn't take 10 minutes. Of course, I live in a single story house & can reach all my windows by using this portable platform thingie www.lowes.com/pd_146404-287-AP-20-MP

I got mine when it was on sale - $26.99 and worth every penny! You have something solid to stand on and can move right or left, as needed, & it's also great for other projects around the house, not just washing windows.

A professional window washer showed me his technique. He uses a squirt of dish soap in water and a wide squeegee - no sponge on it, which he gets from a janitorial supply store.

He wets a rag in the water and puts it over his squeegee and does a quick swipe over the window to wash it. Then he uses the squeegee to remove the water in a way that has as few lifts as possible. He dries the squeegee onto the cloth to avoid drips.

I don't know about screens.

You have a great laundry and cooking system!

I will call the newspaper and see if I can get paper.

To clean the fridge, I start with a bowl of warm water with dishsoap and a clean dishcloth and set it on the counter right next to the fridge. I take everything off one shelf, wash it off with the dishcloth then wipe dry with a clean tea towel, then put the good stuff back on the shelf. I do this one shelf at a time and if I am really not motivated, only do one shelf a day. It seems to go quickly and I don't feel overwhelmed because I haven't taken out too much stuff.

Kitchen island - less is better. I have a home for each pot and lid, but I had to reduce the number of items to make it happen. When in doubt about what to get rid of - note that you can always cook a small quantity in a larger pot if you have to. I only have one small pot to make gravy or heat soup.

I am a Ziploc fan. Note which size you use the most and have a brand loyalty so you use the same shapes and lid sizes and they nest. I have the bowls sit on top of the stack of matching lids.

I have a set of 3 plastic bowls which nest and have lids stand up in a magazine holder. I got rid of so much plastic and only keep convenient (store nicely) essentials.

Magazines - I finally had to admit, I read so much stuff online, I don't read magazines much. I only subscribe to Time and almost read one a week.

Books - I listen to audio books and seldom read, but still can't seeme to get rid of all the books and occassionally bring home a few.

Christmas cards - hubby set up a mailing list in Word and prints it onto labels. He updates it during the year as people move, etc.

For the freezer and pantry - I challenge you to 'shop the pantry and freezer' till it's cleared out. I am doing this right now to clean out my freezer before fall when I stock up for winter.

Assume each meal will be made from what you already have on hand and use your grocery list only for items you need for these dishes.

Good to hear your tricks!

Things I manage well.

My husband likes for us to sit down and watch a couple of TV programs together in the evening so I put in a load of laundry, toss to dryer and fold while watching the last of the programs. I can sit and fold things while sitting on the couch watching the TV. Two birds with one stone sort of thing.

I have a cleaning service come in once a year to clean windows once a year. I can then spot clean as needed which is usually the glass French doors along the back side of the house.

I use to have an ironing board that came out of a kitchen drawer and unfolded. So handy and easy t put away. Don’t have that in this new home though, but ironing board stays up in the laundry room. Don’t have to put it up or take it down.

Moving. Go to your local newspaper and ask to purchase unprinted end runs. They stop before they get to the end of the roll sometimes as much as 30 yards or as little as 5 yards and sell the rest for pennies. No more ink on everything.

My husband and I both like to cook so sometimes I cook, sometime he cooks, and sometimes we cook together. But no matter who cooks, he cleans the kitchen and all I have to do is turn on the dishwasher in the morning and then unload it. Works for me.

Janc319, I love the “selling the table” idea! Lol

Whozethere, I will try the audio book idea. Thanks.

Things I need help on.

Cleaning the refrigerator is a problem for me as is clearing out the freezer. I am sure that are things in the freezer that are no longer good and need to be tossed.

I need to clean out under my kitchen island (home of pot and pans, skillets, etc.). Somehow it has gotten too crowded, not stacked according to size and the home of a lot of plastic.

My pantry is over flowing and I have no idea what is in there unless it is on the front of the shelves. I need to desperately cull and organize. Any helpful hints?

Magazines! Way too many and we are slow to read. Always have several months worth of each magazine in the kitchen (on table or counter) at any one time.

I never seem to get the Christmas cards addressed and out.

Still working on the grand purge... I've got my closet done, my chests of drawers are scheduled for the evening, and during the week I'll be working on the bathrooms. The kitchen is slated for next weekend. That one's going to be a bear. I've got stuff in the backs of my cabinets that I swear I bought ten years ago!

I managed to get a good portion of my kitchen clean, organized along with the fridge plus adding two trips to different grocery stores. I purchased Blood Oath since it was a summer recommended read. A different kind of vampire book & made the mundane easier to do.

Hello, I am new and I am an expert clutterer plus an expert procrastinator. The department psychologist on one job I had told me I was OCD. I am looking at stacks of work and saying . . . uhhhh, how? He told me I get overwhelmed with details and give up. OK, slowly I can see the too many details, never feeling like something is possible and disengaging. HELP!!!

OK a few things that help with chores I hate:
1 the computer. I hate paperwork and I hate the clutter of paperwork. The more bills and budget I can do online, the better.
2 audiobooks. Nothing better than doing BORING tedious chores than to have a book going.
3 Find something you hate to do more. I will procrastinate and do something I have put off forever to avoid something I don't want to do. emoticon Just sometimes, it is hard to find something I want to hate and procrastinate doing more. LOL!

It took me more than a week the first time, but I now try to do this at least 4 times a year (when the seasons change).
Once, at the beginning of winter, I also decided to make a list of things I needed (ie: new glasses, dish towels, a set of pyrex bowls etc. in the kitchen) and I tacked the list up on the fridge so I could watch for sales before or after Christmas. Lo and behold, under the emoticon that year was EVERYTHING on my list! DH had seen the list and decided it would make his shopping easy that year. emoticon

JANC319 that's a great idea! I've been trying to find a system that works for me and I end up being haphazard and frustrated. I still struggle with whether to do a lot with a little (like focusing on one area) so I can see some progress or do a little with a lot (straightening here and there) so I don't feel so overwhelmed.

I'm going to try your method and see what happens, maybe give myself a week to do the whole house.

I start at my kitchen sink (the FlyLady way), then work moving to the right all the way around the room. Next I move on to the doorway of my dining area (it's the first thing on the right as I exit the kitchen) and go all around it until I am back to the doorway. I move around the house like this. It's very systematic and gets you to stay on track instead of hap-hazardly moving from here to way-over-there and back again. Also, I keep an old laundry basket with me so that when I find something that does not belong in that room, it goes into he basket & is placed in the correct room at the end of the de-cluttering session. That also keeps me from getting sidetracked.

Lets see, I moved into an apartment, Got rid of the DR table, but the same things appear now in another place. Now I am learning to put things where they belong, instead of just piling it somewhere. Boy, this learning takes time to make new habits.

I had the worst habit of piling everything on our dining room table as I walked into the house. Junk mail, pizza flyers, sunglasses, newspapers.... it was always covered 6 inches deep with junk and dust!
I would declutter it one day just to start the whole process over the next.

One day I had a thought (yes, a lightbulb popped up right over my head!), and I sold the table!
We never used it to eat at, even when we could see the top of it. Usually, if we have friends over, it is in the summer and we grill and eat out on our patio. I did this almost 2 years ago, and have never regretted it.

BARBARAWEBSTER I wish you luck. I am really bad with putting things on the table, they seem to grow roots. Keep us posted on how you are doing. It sounds like you are doing it in stages.

OK, well I like the three bags idea, but I have 3 boxes. One for senior center, one for Salvation Army, and one for friends of the library. I have solved the paper problem by buying a filing box with closing lid and handle. I just toss the real important stuff in it. Time to sort and file when I'm moved and have down time. The stuff I don't know what to do with goes on the kitchen table. Gotta deal with it SOMETIME!!! And that time is running out. I am determined to get food, dishes, utensils, clothes and BED all in the new place this weekend, so I have the rest of the month to clean and dispose of the leftovers everyone hates to deal with!!!! Wish me luck! emoticon

That's really a good idea, to set a particular time for decluttering or whatever, and I plan to try it. Some days I do well if I just remind myself that I'll definitely do it that day--other days not so great. But if I set a particular time (and it could change from day to day as long as I committed to it) I think I'd really do it--thanks for the suggestion!

May 1 I want to start decluttering, etc. in preparation for moving next year. I am never good at deadlines, so I started this week.

I have bags stashed several places around the house. When it's time to declutter 3 PM, I grab the closest bag and get go to it.

It helps having a set time to do something like this that could be totally optional.

I recently found a way to save time cleaning the bathroom. I stopped using paper towels and now use 'cleaning rags' (my old kitchen clothes). I use antibacterial dish detergent and water to clean the sink and counters and it really puts a sparkle on everything!

I don't have a dishwasher. I wash dishes by hand. I don't have a problem washing dishes or putting clean dishes away.

It's cleaning bathrooms that I absolutely hate.

I don't envy anyone getting ready to pack up a house to move. I had that job 10 years ago and it nearly broke me. When my husband was thinking of the prospect of moving in order to land a new job, I told him he can pack up the house this time, he found a local job.

I also don't like going through clutter because it takes lots of time and emotional energy deciding what to toss and what to keep. What to do with it or deal with it. Where to put it and how to store it.

You can tell I need this group....just can't seem to find the time to get started

That a good idea! I bought two sets of matching dishes and the plates big and small all nest well together, making them easy to pick up.... however, I still have to push myself to empty the dishwasher.

There aren't many chores I don't like. I really like to clean- I guess because the results are immediate and in sharp contrast to the rest of my day. However, there is one I avoid and avoid--- putting the dishes away. It doesn't matter whether its from a dishwasher or a sink drainer, I hate it. So, I look at my watch, promiss myself that I'll only do it for 5 minutes. check the time when I've completed it. Its never more than 3 minutes. I remind myself that as rotten a job as it is, it will probably only take a couple of minutes and never more than 5. Then I just do it!!!!

We were away a few times this year and gmail didn't seem to be working most of the time. Today I just deleted 500 emails, most of them Spark, and most about Flylady things, organizing, etc. Whew, that was a big cleanup.

I have to move in the next year or so and I looked at the Flylady site and was a little disappointed.

I can't imagine moving because I'm tackling clutter of 20+ years, but I'd say de-cluttering is a big help to making that chore easier. And keeping a list of what's packed and packing things according to when they'll be needed would be helpful too.

LadyDunn, here's what my Mom did with all of our school stuff. She divided it between me and my 2 sisters into paper grocery sacks. Then one year for Christmas, she tied them up with a bow and gave each of us OUR stuff along with an empty scrapbook!

It was sure fun to go through all of it, each of us deciding for ourselves what was important to keep. Then we had a nice hobby project to work on throughout the year. My oldest sister just tossed the entire bag, without looking through any of it! It was her decision.

That's a great tip, Whee!! I may use that idea. I have 2 boxes of memorabilia (mostly school stuff) from my daughter. I could sort them into boxes by grade and then decide what I want to keep from each grade and put into file folders or something.

If anyone else has any ideas for this task, let me know. i've been procrastinating on it for a long time.

I have a book called Lighten Up--Free Yourself from Clutter (it's a few years old) that recommends you get some boxes and label them financial, career, hobbies, projects, or whatever labels will work for your papers and then sort them into the boxes. After that, sort the papers into notebooks or file folders according to how you will use them. And of course don't forget the trash can!

I had posted this on the wrong thread.

I am going through a large box of misc. papers that have lingered for 10 years. There are banks statements and credit card bills which are easy to shred and toss. Other things like old letters, pictures, future retirment related documents are killing me. I hate it! I have no idea what I will do with the items I have to keep.

Ironing tip - professional steamer. I have one for doing silk floral arrangements (forgot it really is for clothes). It's the same thing used at a dry cleaners. It is very quick, careful with delicate synthetics (can shrink).

Sticking to the traditional English idea of taking them down after the 6th (Twelfth Night) but as it is my brother's birthday on 7th, my Mum and I always kept them up until the 8th so he felt special.

My grandson is 9 today and when he was smaller he believed the decorations were especially for him and everyone else's house was also decorated for him - perhaps the fact that his name is Christopher had a little bit to do with that! After all, isn't Christmas a special season for Christopher ?

Does everyone have their Christmas decorations put up yet? I know how we all love this chore! LOL!!

Remember when you are packing up to declutter ones you don't love...then that's less you have to put up next year. Donations of Christmas decorations to nursing homes are always welcome.

The dreaded frig & cabinets.
Grocery shopping is done once a week.
I make my list as I review my cabinets and frig.
I toss out perishables (science projects) and donate non-perishables (that I realize I don't and didn't use).
When home from grocery shopping, I put on an old movie I enjoy, and then start cleaning the frig while putting the groceries away.
Since I do this every week it takes a half hour to take inventory, toss, donate, clean and put new items away all while watching (listening to a movie I enjoy to hear again).

PS - never watch a new movie because you will never get the job done!

Theme based rather than room based would cover it except for when there is a change over of Student Hosting guests and tenant in the flat - then it's head down and clean room and bathroom top to bottom - sometimes with a gap of only one hour between departure and arrival. Hardly gives time for the beds to cool down!
Another exception is that I do tend to do all bathrooms on one run - keeps all the product & equipment requirements to one trip.
It's mirrors and picture glass today!

Isn't it strange how we all approach the same things in different ways - instead of doing a room at a time, I do the decluttering throughout, then I'll dust wash or polish the surfaces depending on need - probably on a different day! - and then wrestle with the vacuum cleaner. Windows get done by professionals.
Same thing applies when I springclean - starting with feather-dusting ceilings, cornices, picture rails and light-fittings. Darn it - need to wash the chandelier crystals - that'll give the triceps a workout before Xmas!

I hate room cleaning. I'll do laundry, wash dishes, clean the yard etc but the rooms are not my specialty.

To make it better I write a list of all the activities involved eg. clean top of dresser, re-arrange magazines, change curtains. I feel so accomplished checking each thing off the list (I am a list junkie) that I forget I am actually cleaning a room. In my head I am doing 10 or so really small tasks. It also helps me if I have limited time because I can immediately identify which tasks will have the biggest impact and do those.
