Kate, it is blissful here right now you would love it. Clear blue skies and sunshine when the rain isn't lashing down with gale force winds.

I love 'em both. So happy to meet up again.

Bought coconut oil today solidified and cant wait to get started. I'm going to be looking and feeling 30 again in no time. :)

Big hugs.

Thanks Wispy. I am going to try to get back to our other team -- still struggling with time management issues, but I think I'm getting better. Besides, I won't be able to go do so many other things while Sonja is here, so perhaps I'll have more time for SP.

Wish I could come visit you -- it's going to be blistering hot here Friday & Saturday, & you're just going into winter. Winter has become my favorite season, since it's the coolest one!

I bruise very easily too on my hands & forearms -- the result of lots of naprosyn for back pain & too much sun. Arnica gel really helps heal the bruises faster, & blood liver pills taken on a daily basis help me not bruise so easily. (Of course, doing nothing also helps -- no housework, no dishes, etc. ... LOL)

Coconut oil is also supposed to help with dementia & Alzheimer's, & with Parkinson's Disease. I am now caregiver for a young woman with Huntington's Disease, & I hope to get some into her & see if that would help with her problems with muscle control. Can't hurt (like chicken soup), right?

Wispy I buy big jars of the solid coconut oil. spread it on toast, it's delicious. I use it as oil for frying too, & in smoothies, & in oatmeal. The more you eat, the more effective it is against Alzheimers (or so I've read). It's good for skin too, but I keep forgetting to slather it on.

Woohoo, I am definitely going to give this a go. I will start off with the solid kind as that is what I have. I live in New Zealand, but don't recall seeing any of the other types, except coconut milk and cream.

The cals are quite high, but I guess using it instead of oil or butter would make no difference to the daily count.

For bruising, I was recently taught to use arnica (arnica montana) You are supposed to put it on right away. You are not supposed to let very much time pass between the injury and applying the cream. It is for muscle aches, swelling, and pain besides treating bruising discoloration. There are also homeopathic pellets you can take internally. You can find them both in health food stores and wherever homeopathic stuff is sold. My elderly folks used it as kids. I gather it was common. Massage therapists go through a lot of it. It might sound like snake oil, and granted that the placebo affect is powerful, nonetheless I myself have used it successfully.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I read this morning that coconut oil can help heal bruises, and I'd like to try it. Every month I get blood drawn, and three times out of four, I bruise. I hate looking like a junkie.

I use the solid kind in a jar; some on my face, some melted on popcorn or cooked with my oatmeal. I've been using it for about 3 months now (since this post first appeared) and I can tell it's making a difference. (And my skin looks so wonderful!)

There are all kinds of coconut foodstuffs. A few: there's coconut oil - often sold in jars, solid when cool, liquid when warm; coconut butter - sold in jars, chunkier than coconut oil, solid when cool; full fat coconut milk - sold in tins, used in cooking i.e. curries; reduced fat coconut milk - sold in quart Tetra bricks - for drinking, might be seen as a milk substitute; coconut water - sold in cartons, made from the juice of green coconuts, lots of potassium, made for drinking.

wow this sounds amazing stuff. Over here it comes in a solidified form. I am wondering if this has the same benefits. I use it rarely, but all these benefits seem to indicate it would be a big health and beauty booster.

After hot yoga, I ALWAYS drink coconut water. I don't think about if I like the taste or not. It simply does what water alone is not able to do and feels so good to me in those conditions. When I haven't been sweating buckets and I have a little, it doesn't taste very good to me at all. Curious. Thanks for sharing the article.

I mix it with sugar to make an exfoliating sugar scrub. I've used it on the dry ends of my hair, but I avoid my scalp. I cook with it more often than other oils, and bake with it too as the natural sweetness goes great in deserts. I haven't tried using it as a moisturizer, as I'm afraid it would cause a break out; is this not the case for those of you who do? I would think it would be a wonderful cuticle cream though! I've also heard of mixing it with baking soda to make a non-toxic gunk remover for sticky labels. The possibilities are endless!

I'm a big fan of cooking with coconut oil. I'm also a big fan of drinking coconut water after hot power yoga practices. For me, it is the best thing to replenish all I've lost sweating buckets. So many electrolytes. I believe it was in the 80's that coconut oil in specific and all fats in general, got a bad rap. I was raised on extremely small quantities of olive oil. To this day, my mother raises her eyebrows at the mention of coconut oil.

From the Dr. David Jockers Facebook Page:
This is why my clients affectionately call me Dr Coconut! I can't get enough of this stuff and I cannot stop sharing my enthusiasm for all the nutritional benefits of Coconut Oil.

What is a SuperFood?
Foods that have an incredible array of health benefits that go well beyond just their nutrient value are considered 'super-foods.' Mothers' milk is considered the most perfect food on the planet for human consumption do to its ideal nutritional content and immune boosting compounds.

The closest match in nature to mothers' milk is found within the coconut. This tropical staple is loaded with many powerful fatty acids that give it a unique taste and an abundance of health enhancing benefits.

Coconut oil is rich in healthy small to medium chained saturated fats called medium chain triglycerides or MCTs. Most common vegetable or seed oils consist of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs. The LCTs put more strain on the pancreas, liver and GI tract. The body must package these LCTs with carrier proteins that require special enzymes to effectively metabolize.

Isn't Saturated Fat Bad For You?
These MCTs are smaller and permeate cell membranes easily without the need for carrier proteins and special enzymes. MCTs are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into useable energy rather than being stored as fat. In fact, MCTs do not depend on bile or pancreatic enzymes to be effectively metabolized. This makes coconut oil fully digestible by those who have had their gallbladder removed.

Coconut Oil is an Anti-Oxidant:
Coconut oil is the most stable of all the commonly used fatty acid sources due to its high composition of saturated fats. This stability is very important because it reduces the free radical load on our bodies. Physiologist and biochemist Ray Peat, Ph.D. considers coconut oil to be an anti-oxidant due to its resistance to oxidation and free radical formation.

Coconut oil helps to balance hormones, stabilize blood sugar levels and boost the cellular healing process. It is also known to stimulate the thyroid and reduce stress on the liver and pancreas. This increases metabolism and helps us burn fat more effectively. Additionally, coconut oil increases our energy levels due to its very clean and easy digestive process.

Coconut Oil Boosts Immunity:
Both mothers' milk and coconut oil are rich in the immune boosting lauric acid which is converted in our body to monolaurin. Monolaurin contains extraordinarily powerful anti-biotic, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Unlike man-made anti-biotics and anti-virals these fatty acids pose no danger within our bodies. They are completely harmless to us, yet powerful at destroying harmful microbes by damaging the cell membrane of these competing organisms. This makes coconut oil one of the best foods to eat during cold/flu season.

These MCTs are also known for their ability to speed the healing process of cuts and bruises by destroying microbes and enhancing cellular metabolism and tissue repair. It is also very soothing and great at reducing stress when it is applied onto face, temples and scalp.

Coconut Oil is Anti-Aging for the Skin:
Coconut oil is fantastic for keeping the skin and connective tissue strong and supple. It helps protect skin from the aging effects of free radicals and naturally reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It is also one of the best nutritional moisturizers for our hair and scalp. Applying coconut oil has been known to enhance texture and highlights in hair while eliminating dandruff and dry skin.

Dr. David Jockers Facebook Question: How much coconut oil should I use? Will I overdose?

Answer: No, you will not overdose. I have an article that describes this. I typically recommend 3-4 tbsp daily for normal sized adults. Kids - 2-3 Tbsp is optimal.

Using Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil:
1. Rub into hair and onto skin as a moisturizer after shower.
2. Use as a natural deodorant by applying to underarms - it can also be combined with aluminum-free baking soda and essential oils to make a complete deodorant.
3. Use coconut oil when you cook due to its incredible stability.
4. You can use 1 - 4 Tbsp of EV Coconut oil in raw form daily. I think it tastes great!
5. Use coconut milk for shakes, smoothies and creamy recipes
6. Snack on coconut flakes daily.
