Make a paste by combining one tablespoon salt with one-half tablespoon lemon juice. Rub this abrasive mixture on rough and tough skin areas such as elbows, feet and knees until mostly smooth (and not too red). Wash the paste off with cool water. This is a great way to use up a lemon that’s losing its luster.

If your hands have an unpleasant, lingering smell from bleach or any other strong, chemical cleaner, wash them with lukewarm water and some non-gel toothpaste. The mildly abrasive consistency of the paste will scrub off the nasty scent molecules from your skin’s surface.

Keep a pulled cork on the end of a corkscrew, especially if the corkscrew is loose in a drawer with other things that you often look for…and especially if cleaning and organizing your junk drawer is just not going to happen!

When making meatloaf, place one or two slices of uncooked bacon on the bottom of the pan beneath the loaf…then cook the loaf according to your recipe. Not only will this add a little extra flavor, but it will also keep the meatloaf from sticking, making cleanup (and leftover collecting) a breeze!

Once you open a bag of flour, it’s on its way to tasting stale. OK, it should keep just fine for a few months, but if you transfer the flour from the bag to an airtight container and keep it in a cool place, it will stay fresh for YEARS. The coolest place, the freezer, will keep it super-fresh as well as bug-free.

Did you know that your hair grows fastest when you’re in love? It’s probably because your hormones are jumping for joy. If you want to give all that extra hair some body and bounce, add one teaspoon of champagne to two tablespoons of your regular shampoo. Work it into your hair, washing and rinsing as usual. (You can also rinse with a bit of champagne after shampooing.)

The bubbly should help make your hair livelier, and the tartaric acid in the champagne will bring out your hair’s natural highlights, especially if you are blonde.

If you have very dry winter hands and commercial lotions aren’t cutting it, puncture a vitamin E gel capsule, squish out the oil and rub it on your hands. Do this twice a day to help heal the painful cracks that often come with cold weather.

A great source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, dietary fiber and good-for-you nutrients, avocados taste great, especially in guacamole and especially at Super Bowl parties! This version has a secret ingredient (lime zest!) that gives it a tangy twist. For best results, prepare this dip just before serving.

Guacamole with Diced Tomatoes
3 ripe avocados, insides scooped out and mashed
2 plum tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon finely chopped jalapeño chile
3 tablespoons minced onions, optional
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 pinch lime zest
5 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves
Coarse salt
Combine the mashed avocado, tomatoes, jalapeño, onions, lime juice, lime zest, cilantro and mix until well blended. Add salt to taste. Makes 6 servings.

When you need on-the-spot smarts, put your index finger on the Renzhong (the acupressure point in the middle of your philtrum, which is the spot between your nose and upper lip). Press in for 30 seconds. Experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine suggest using this technique to increase alertness, clarity and focus. They believe that putting pressure on this point accesses nerves which carry signals to the brain. We know that it works for us!

An hour before popping corn (freshly popped is always the best), sprinkle a little warm water on the kernels. Or keep your popcorn kernels in the freezer. Either way—warm water or freezer—your popcorn will be fluffier and have fewer duds.

If there’s a wax buildup on your leather furniture, rub it with stale beer…or a solution made from ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar combined with ½ cup of water. Then wash the leather with saddle soap (available at tack stores where saddles and other equine supplies are sold, as well as some shoe-repair stores) and water. Complete the job by buffing the upholstery with a soft cloth to bring out the leather’s shine.

If you want to separate eggs, do it as soon as you take them out of the fridge. They’re easier to separate when they’re cold.

And here’s a clever way to do it. Buy a little funnel. Place the funnel in a glass, then crack the egg over it. The egg white will glide into the glass and the yolk will stay in the funnel.

Don’t throw out your stale bread. To make it fresh again, spray with a bit of water or milk and wrap it in aluminum foil. Put it in a 350°F oven for about 8 minutes, and the bread should taste as though it just came out of the oven…for the first time.

If you are using any citrus fruit in your holiday recipes, consider saving the shell to use as a centerpiece. This simple idea is attractive and smells good, too.

Cut a citrus fruit (lemon, lime, orange, etc.) in half. Remove the pulp for cooking and put a votive candle in the middle of the shell. Surround the candle with cranberries to hold it in place. Use several oranges, grapefruits, lemons or limes as a centerpiece, or you can space them out around the table.

As well as cider vinegar being good as a foot soak, its also great to drink a table spoon a day to balance the body´s acidity, actually making it more alkaline. If you can´t stand it on its own out it in a glass of water. Its good for so many other uses as well. Anyone have any more good tips for cider vinegar?

Wolf, you are so right about the task being daunting. I end up breaking down tasks into smaller chunks that comprise impossible to do lists. Even though there aren't enough hours to accomplish everything, though, I love the satisfaction of crossing off items. As for a peaceful state, I'd love to achieve that while mopping, but my back just won't cooperate.

Sometimes the task of cleaning your house can seem daunting. But then again, thinking about doing it actually can feel worse than the task itself. Consider it this way: The repetitive action of vacuuming…dusting…or even cleaning windows can lull you into a peaceful state and even relieve stress. Let your mind wander as you move around your home. And after an hour or so, you just might find that the time moved along pleasantly and, in the process, you have accomplished something!

To dissolve foot pain after shopping all day, add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a basin (or two plastic shoe boxes) filled halfway with lukewarm water. Then soak your feet for at least 15 minutes. The aches and pains of store-hopping should melt away.

I have so many old t-shirts my rag box is overflowing. It is a great way to use this stuff. It seems such a waste to throw out a cloth after one use.
I also use my kitchen towels for many of the things I once used paper towels for. Yes it makes a lot of wash but it is worth it.

My interests include anything fibery, sustainable and healthy living and gardening. I have a blog about Slow Cloth, Slow Food and Sustainable Living

That's what my mom did! We called it a rag box, and it was great that the scraps could be washed. I am starting to go back to what the older generation did anyway. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Mini-pumpkins and gourds leftover from Halloween make colorful candleholders—a simple solution for your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Cut off the tops, scoop out the insides, then insert a candle.

emoticon I didn't know that about thyme. I just picked a handful from the garden for my stew.

In addition to (or instead of) buying a microfiber dust cloth, recycle old pairs of cotton socks or gloves and use them to dust. Old, cut-up cotton T-shirts and discarded shoulder pads also make good dust rags. Snagged pantyhose and used fabric-softener sheets are excellent lint-free dust collectors. And they’re all washable.

Tired of chamomile to calm your nerves? Try a soothing cup of thyme tea. Place a teaspoon of the dried herb in a glass or ceramic cup and add just-boiled water. Let steep for five minutes and strain. “Thyme” was originally called “wild time” because it was thought to be an aphrodisiac.
