I'm afraid it's moved to my chest - going to try meditating this evening. Plan to celebrate when it's gone!

Glad you're back Micki and you've joined the chat Laura. I've been down with the 'crud'; tried some directed meditation to chase those germs out of my body, but wasn't successful. With practice comes perfection...

I have always used postive words only during my meditations...negative words (no, dont) dont really work in meditation.
Instead--if you're trying to rid yourself of somthing--you think of that thing as you breathe out--therefore releasing it.
Makes sense to me anyway.
:)

Vickie - the message was that MAKEROOM4ME has joined our team. I send them out to the group when we get a new member (like you!)

Glad to offer my advice (although I am a novice).

I enjoyed a guided meditation while my sis was here + tried parts of the POSITIVE affirmation, just ridding my mind of negative thoughts during meditation this morning - really liked it, stayed more relaxed...

Thank you !!! You know I think you are right ! I think I did read someplace not to use a negative such as 'no' or 'no' or 'never' in affirmations, so thank you for putting me on the right track.

Oh btw : I just had a message that I had a message from you, but when I went to sparkmail it was empty !! g-r-r-r-r
Can you kindly resend ??

Vicki - I think that sounds wonderful - I am FAR from an expert, but I would think you don't want the word "no" in an affirmation. I really like "I only eat healthy foods."

Hi everyone !
Question : ( I am new to meditation, not to natural healing )

Is it effective to mediate with mala beads with an affirmation ?? Example : I am and have been a binge eater for 27 years, would an effective meditation be to repeat a few rounds of japa with ' I only eat healthy foods ' or ' I no longer need to hurt myself '

What do you think ?

Can't find my notes (which would have been much better than my description), but this is what I do.
I put my hands together, palms up, thumbs touching, right hand in left (opens heart chakra), but you can place your hands wherever it's comfortable. I breathe in as I lift my heel off the floor and move my foot forward and breathe out as I place my foot on the floor, heel and then toe. Same for other foot.
Since walking becomes automatic, walking meditation helps me become more aware.
Hope the explanation works???

Tried a little walking meditation this morning (makes me realize I need to get up a little earlier on weekdays..)
It was wonderful - being aware of my breath as my feet started to leave the floor and come back. Plan to expand the time more tomorrow.

I love the 4 ingredients:
1. avoid harmful behavior
2. have a positive/happy outlook
3. study the nature of life
4. live an altruistic life

While I chose to be happy and attempt to expand my mind with study of philosophy, I have yet to consciously avoid harmful behavior, which I believe would lead to an altruistic life.

I love the following excerpt. I want to start asking myself the same questions every day.

“What makes for a meaningful life? I consider each day, not just the life as a whole. I look at four ingredients. First, was it a day of virtue? I’m talking about basic Buddhist ethics—avoiding harmful behavior of body, speech, and mind; devoting ourselves to wholesome behavior and to qualities like awareness and compassion. Second, I'd like to feel happy rather than miserable. The realized beings I've known exemplify extraordinary states of well-being, and it shows in their demeanor, their way of dealing with adversity, with life, with other people. And third, pursuit of the truth—seeking to understand the nature of life, of reality, of interpersonal relationships, or the nature of mind. But you could do all that sitting quietly in a room. None of us exists in isolation, however, so there is a fourth ingredient: a meaningful life must also answer the question, “What have I brought to the world?” If I can look at a day and see that virtue, happiness, truth, and living an altruistic life are prominent elements, I can say, “You know, I’m a happy camper.” Pursuing happiness does not depend on my checkbook, or the behavior of my spouse, or my job, or my salary. I can live a meaningful life even if I only have ten minutes left.”

—B. Alan Wallace from "What Is True Happiness" (Tricycle Magazine,Fall 2005)

Tonight I may count my blessings and look back on the day with joy and get out of my own way. I am tired and I see illness, not happiness. Yet, I read your quote and I remember the joys and aspirations met in the day and I am the wiser. Someone inside of me is crying and someone inside of me wants to dance and my body is saying, "Let's all settle down, it is dark, it is late and it is cold, let's rest our bones and let us sleep." Yet mischief calls for just one more thing...let us do or have just one more thing, I am not done!!! But, peace is calling, "Day is done." "Rest,"my soul whispers, "...and let your dreams become your sun!" And though it is cold outside, a warm breeze blows across my heart as I drift closer to my blankets and bed, knowing dreams soon await me on the other side of consciousness and I will soon glide away for a spell in the land that has no name though many call for it.

Beginning and End

A lojong (mind-training) slogan, with a comment by Pema Chödrön:

Slogan: Two activities: one at the beginning, one at the end.

Comment: In the morning when you wake up, you reflect on the day ahead and aspire to use it to keep a wide-open heart and mind. At the end of the day, before going to sleep, you think over what you have done. If you fulfilled your aspiration, even once, rejoice in that. If you went against your aspiration, rejoice that you are able to see what you did and are no longer living in ignorance. This way you will be inspired to go forward with increasing clarity, confidence, and compassion in the days that follow.

At least the holidays are past, now every day living can resume for a while. There is fun to be had over the holiday season but I am very happy to just put one foot in front of the other and go about peaceful life without the big meals and the holiday hubbub. I don't mean to sound like a scrooge but I like the quiet life in the winter to get to the other side of the deep cold. The best part of December is visiting the family for a while.

I survived Thanksgiving without over-eating. Possibly only because my oven is broken and I couldn't roast a turkey. Whatever the reason, I enjoy the result!

such a beautiful day a nice breeze. seems like it just puts you in a good mood kinda gives you a peace from the running around of everyday life, you actually take the time to enjoy it when it's nice out so I will take that to tomorrow and enjoy it as well

( only those who risk going to far know how far they can go)

self control is knowing you can and deciding you wont

the only thing you can't do ....is what you dont think you can do!!!!!.

When I focus on love being everywhere, much joy comes into my heart.

When I am in the moment, I am meditating. I love my garden meditations. I am relaxed, enjoying the moment, I hear my spirit.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Even if we lose the race, we are still a winner (just a slow winner).

As long as you keep moving, you are still lapping those on the couch.

Do not take things personally as it is never about us.

Don't find fault, find a remedy.

"The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking."

"The claim that love pervades this world may not sound real to you but that doesn't mean it isn't true. Most of us just haven't learned to pay much attention to the countless moments of love, kindness, and care that surround us each day..."

When tossed upside-down in the surf, unable to discern which way is up and which is down, the natural swimmer just lets go, breathing out, and follows the bubbles to the surface.

I have been meditating on and off for the last 10 years. I have really been noticing a difference when I get a chance to just sit down and be still for even a few minuets a day.

It is good to see that there are other people trying to do this as well.

Well, let's see......one of my favorite quotes is from edgar allen poe......."all that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream."

It makes sense........which is the dream.....when we are sleeping or awake?

This may sound crazy but my best time to meditate is when we are driving through the Black Hills on our Harley Davidson motorcycle. I am never closer to God than then. Being in nature whether it be noisy or quiet is my meditative church.

"Meditation, simply defined, is a way of being aware. It is the happy marriage of doing and being. It lifts the fog of our ordinary lives to reveal what is hidden; it loosens the knot of self-centeredness and opens the heart; it moves us beyond mere concepts to allow for a direct experience of reality. Meditation embodies the way of awakening: both the path and its fruition. From one point of view, it is the means to awakening; from another, it is awakening itself."

"Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you, as a shadow clings to a form."

“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” ~Bruce Lee
