I do SP so I can track what I eat since it helps me from gaining weight. There are aspects I can't change since I eat out a lot for work. That won't change since I travel at min 1 week a month. Some months I'm gone for 3 weeks straight.

Plus I support the restaurant industry so a lot of formals, lot of dinners, lot of cocktail receptions. I try and do cardio a min of 4x a week when I'm not swamped I try to do 6x a week that helps me to lose. (I also have PCOS which is another challenge. Regular client/team dinners are easier since I can make substitions. Celebrity Chef events are a PIA since they get offended if you make changes plus its usually an once in a lifetime experience.

I try and stay within 1,500 - 1700 calories when I'm home. When I'm traveling and have client stuff then up to 2,500-3,000 calories but then I have to do a 20min of cardio each day minimum.

Liquor is another calorie drain. So if I go the low carb route I stick to martinis, and jack daniels on the rocks

As simple as it sounds, we all must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we've been given.

Isn't it just a killer?
I too thought I ate pretty reasonably. I ate a pretty balanced diet (at least I thought!) and while I probably had bigger portions than I should, and had a cookie or two more often than I should....I didn't think I was that bad!
But whoa!
No wonder I was happily maintaining my overweight weight!
Gah!

Since this is my first week I wanted to see how my regular eating looks. I've always thought I ate pretty healthy - maybe a few too many cookies and chocolates, but definitely plenty of veggies, whole grains, etc. I am discovering that I am hitting the bottom of my target calories before dinner and dinner is typically my biggest meal of the day. So, I need to make some changes. I think my lunches and afternoon snacks are fine, but I need a breakfast makeover to make this work! My plans are to gather more data this week and then to make a change in breakfast for next week and see how it goes from there.

My first week I lost a lot and that's normal. After my intake was so high, to have it be low it's no wonder I lost!
It's normal to lose the most the first week.
I wasn't exercising much at first. I let my focus be on tracking my food and eating within my limits and on getting my water.
I think it's easiest to focus on one thing at a time. If we did it all at one time it'd be overwhelming and we'd likely quit....

My fitness plan is set up to do cardio 3 days and strength training 2 days and have the weekends free. I'm finding I like to be here and see what everyone else is doing so I have been doing some of those quick exercises on the weekend to. I won't pull out my dvd lol! I don't think it is wise for me to skip a day, but I won't be to hard on myself if I do miss a weekend, but I won't accept any excuse from myself during the week. I can always resort back to SP's 15 min. Desk Workout LOL!

Are you exercising every day? I've been walking/running 3 days a week, but just started the strength training today. After seeing how many calories I actually eat every day- I now know why the cardio wasn't doing much!!

Mine didn't take long. I am down a few pounds-not sure exactly. My scale is touchy. I just know that I am always looking for a number I haven't seen. And, I am seeing that on the scale. I know some don't recommend this, but I get on it every morning. The first week you should lose water weight and then usually weight loss tapers off to 1-2 lbs. a week. This is the healthy way.

Two more things. The eating out. I use to eat out every Monday when I would leave work n go grocery shopping. I cut that out. I come home first. My dh had a softball game and I didn't go, so I said I wonder what I can go eat at Burger King. I punched in all the items I liked on SP and about died. One meal was almost all the calories I was allowed in a day!! Huge eye opener. I did eat out at Disneyland. I'm not gonna deprive myself. And, that is life's reality that I have to learn to deal with. I know I need to get a kids meal (no soda) or 2 BK tacos to stay in range. As it warms up I will probably go to tea. For now, just water.

As for the premade SP menu. When my list came out on Sunday I would plan my meals around it's veggies and meats. Now, I kinda wing it. I know my various options for bfast n lunch, so I can choose whatever I feel like. Dinner is still tricky. I want to do other meals, but tracking the calories is sometimes time consuming. I browse on the SP recipes. The one thing I do stay true to is the amount of carb, veggie, fruit and protein listed for each meal. I know I need to have so many fruits n veggies a day, so I keep them the same as they show up on the meal planner. I just sub one fruit out for another etc. That way I know I am getting a well balanced meal all day long - the chocolate :)

I'm going to have to really plan ahead as far as snacks, lunch.. goes. If not, I'm grabbing whatever sounds good because I'm starving. (like the pizza rolls I got for .20!!)
How long did it take you guys to lose your first few pounds doing the SP?

Fourkidzmom,
I third being accountable for tracking your calories. I never realized I ate 3,000 calories a day before I started this. I soooo want to be within my ranges on everything now. I have a problem going to the cupboard and grabing a bite of anything that looks good in there. That could be 4 handfuls of junk. And, when I started recording those bites it was a huge eye opener of added calories. I like to be in my computer room because whenever I walk to my great room (kitchen is connected) I feel like I immediately want to walk towards those cupboards.

As for picking up those cheap gg snacks. I did/do, do it. I like to have the cakes n cookie packages if I have to bring something somewhere, but I decided 2 weeks ago to stop buying them. I have more than I need if I go somewhere. I am trying to cut out all the packaged stuff. I started w/the rice n pasta mixes-yuck, then the trans fat items(toaster streudel, BC delights, canned soups due to sodium and now since starting SP I am weeding out the boxed crackers. The calories are pretty high. I'd rather have chocolate :) Real quickly, I will not have the crap I have in there now to go to. I love to have the Quaker 90 calorie granola bars, pretzels, and Baked Lays, Oh and some popcorn for movie nights.

Seeing by recording what goes into my mouth has made a huge difference in me only drinking water since starting SP. That is my biggest accomplishment. I love my chocolate and the soda would just push me over my calories. My dad died of cancer and my mom now has diabetes, so I want to stay away from aspartame to. If I do happen to use up all my calories and I just have to have a snack, I've been trying to do some of those quick 5 min. exercises to counteract eachother lol!!

These are all things I've learned since SP. It has been a huge eye opener.

You can do it, with our help, we all can do it!!

Oh yeah, definitely! I still have cake mix that I bought when I first started GGing in September of last year!
I've changed the way I shop~ I go for the meats and fruits on the list (or whatever else I need that fits with my new healthier eating) and stock up the rest on my own list of needs. I'm still saving though!

Last week I had a cart full of chicken and veggies and yogurt etc and I only spent $77. That is WAY under what I'd spend pre-GG and I'd have WAY less food!

I do not eat off of the Meal Planner. I eat my own stuff. A lot of times if I'm unsure about something I look up the nutritional info first to see how much I should have or if I should just skip it. LOL

I think you can still have the cookies and brownies. There are nights that I need more calories and fat so I have a couple cookies. You can also make the brownie mix with applesauce or canned pumpkin to be healthier....

Well, I actually stopped eating out because of GGing! So I haven't eaten out in quite a while...but I think when I do I will plan ahead!
I'll figure out what I can eat ahead of time and stick to it the best I can.
Even if I make a mistake I'll be sure to learn from it!

You're right Kate, the accountability of plugging in everything I eat is really good for me. And even though I don't like seeing those numbers-I need to!!Before this, I didn't really think about all the snacking I do throughout the day-which really adds up.Have you all stopped eating out while your trying to lose weight? Thats also a big downfall for me!

Oh yeah...sleep is BIG.
When your body isn't getting energy from rest~ it goes to food!

Maybe when you feel tired~ exercise!
I know it sounds backwards but moderate exercise will actually GIVE you energy and will help you sleep better at night!

Just an idea!
Kate

Kate, I agree. This time I'm trying to focus on mini steps. For one, I know that I do not get enough sleep. When I'm tired I find myself grazing all day in order to keep me going. I'm also trying to get in two fruits and vegetables a day. Those small changes should start to add up to some huge successes. I'm just going to keep at it.

Well, being accountable even if you aren't being 'good' is great!
I think now that you've seen what the calories add up to for the items you've been eating that maybe you'll be making some different choices.

For me, I like the structure and accountability of entering my food. And I'm making good choices because I want to lose and I want to feel better.

If you are having a hard time making good food choices~ perhaps focus on another aspect for now. Focus on your water and some exercise!

Once you start doing something that feels good it will be motivating to do the other things too!

Good Luck! We are here for you!!
You CAN do it! Just remember~ baby steps! :)
Kate

SJEAN12, that is me too. My calorie range is 1500-1700. I tend to hit the higher end everyday. I am okay with that. Like you said I probably consumed 3,000 calories a day to.

I just started doing a quick 10-15 minute exercise on here when I am at the top and I just know I have to have that snack. I hope this will help me.

Sorry, Sally. I just realized who you were on the boards.

Usually when I follow a diet I quit when I "mess up." Usually when I follow a diet I think that 1300-1500 calories is ridiculously small. After all, I must have eaten thousands more per day to end up this way, so shouldn't I only have to cut back just a little in order to lose weight? Well, I've been wrong, wrong, wrong.

Today I actually tracked my overeating. I've been doing real well all day, but have been going crazy at the end of the day/early evening. Well, according to the tracker I ate 2600 calories not the thousands more per day that I thought I was eating. What an eye opener! So, yes, 1500 calories is reasonable. I just never wanted it to be. I wanted an excuse to eat what I want.

I am so glad I tracked my overeating because I feel a renewed determination. I am going to eat healthy, BE healthy. I am going to lose this weight!
