I only count my "serious walking" and running on our Virtual Trip mileage.

Other activities (shovel snow, work in the yard, etc.) have not been converted to miles for my trip. These activities count as fitness but I don't count any of it as miles.

So glad I noticed this! I garden, do water aerobics, etc. but have never counted it as part of my walk. Just the miles my pedometer gave me. This will really help as I like to try different things and it would sure be nice to get a little further for a change!!! Thank you everyone for bringing this to our attention!

First time to read this old thread but it is a golden oldie --- still good after all this time!

I use the fitness tracker for a range of activity types --- as long as it qualifies as "fitness". However, I use this group site for tracking only miles of "serious walking" (or bursts of running) to see how far I'd be if I was moving along the interstate.

I think your steps tracked can be however you want them. I decided to only track my aerobic steps on my steps tracker, but then, in the place where you can add a note, I make a special entry everyday: steps, aerobic steps, kcal, miles. That way, I can give myself credit for everything. At least, that's the way I've chosen to use the step tracker on the fitness tracker.

That's a big help, as I'm on the elliptical now that it's cold and the half marathon is over.

The road goes ever on and on down from the road where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone and I must follow if I can; pursuing it with weary feet until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet and whither then - I cannot say. ~ Tolkien

I know for me,as a busy mom, I sometimes don't have time to do a real workout but I make a concious effort to add exercise everywhere I can, like walking in place while brushing my teeth, etc. For that reason I just use the pedometer.

My formula for converting is 20 min of any cardio exercise is a walking mile. If I do a one hour water aerobic class, it is equal to 3 miles. If I bike 12 miles in one hour - I count it as 3 walking miles.

However, I do not call walking around a store grocery shopping or getting up from a chair to go to the bathroom exercise. Just a personal opinion.

But Ya, any movement is good, better than sitting in front of the computer playing games all day.

Thanks for sharing the link, this is very helpful...come winter I know there will be days when walking or running are not on the agenda!

Thanks for asking that question because I go for
my walk almost every morning, but sometimes in the evenings I use my Gazelle.

Thanks for the web site to go to also.

Thank you for the feedback. I did a similar virtual trail once on a site that included an activity converter, which I thought was a nice feature.

I don't see why not. Look at postmen. They walk 20 miles some days. They are certainly more fit for it.

I don't know that your "exercise" miles should be the only ones used on the site.

The site was created to track the activity and exercise habits of people for the Government (notice the capital G) and it is a great carrot.

Mowing lawn is exercise. Walking at work or anywhere else is part of our 10,000 steps a day that is recommended. The recommendation isn't 10,000 steps of walking for exercise. It is 10,000 steps.

Our activity level is important. If you walk 20,000 steps in a day (10 miles) and report it on the site, it counts. You did walk the miles. You will still be stronger and healthier for doing it.

Absolutely. All walking/running/cycling counts.

I think you are free to use the site however works best for you. If converting other activities helps keep you active and working toward your fitness goals, then go for it!

I would think so, I use a pedometer some times when I know I have a lot to do but no time to really do the exercise( walking).

Is it legitimate to conver other activities, such as exercise classes or lawn mowing, to miles walked for the virtual trail?
