This is the first year that hubby and I haven't opened the bags of Halloween candy before the holiday!
What helped?
We're both trying to lose weight and ultimately want that more than we want the sweets.
I also hid the bags of candy in a closet so it's 'out of sight, out of mind.'
I have to work on Hallowwen so I'll put aside a couple of pieces for myself by at least I won't be home to snack on it all day.

If you do buy candy, take your cell phone with you into the store, go before 4pm on a weekday, so you can call the 1-800 number on the package during the hours their customer service line is open, before you check out with the candy. Some manufacturers include aspartame (Equal & Nutrasweet), sucralose (Splenda), and other undesirables in regular, conventional, NOT diet, candy. However, IT IS NOT LISTED ON THE LABEL, YOU HAVE TO CALL THE COMPANY AND ASK. Example: regular Mars bars that are NOT diet, list "natural flavors" on the label, WHICH IS ASPARTAME, but they only admit it if you call and ask them.

Mars is not alone in this practice.

No children here.

If there were I would make homemade goods, wrapped with a Bible verse and my name and address.

In the past I've put an explanation of All Saints Eve, and All Saints Day, folded up beneath the cookie.

If I didn't have time to bake I'd give away the good stuff - anything with chocolate.

I'd use the leftovers if any, to bake with. Mini Snickers bars are great chopped up and put into cookie dough instead of choc chips, etc. You can make cookie dough ahead and either freeze it in scoops or freeze it in logs.

The rule with candy in the house is:
(1) you can have the bowl and a scissors ready, but no opening of the bag until the first doorbell rings; no excuses like you need to mix them up etc.
(2) and get rid of immediately after. Either freeze, throw in the trash, or use in baking RIGHT away. No later than the next morning. No time for that? Fine throw it away then.

When I used to buy chocolate, I'd use the leftover chocolate and the jack o lantern the next morning for baking pumpkin tube (bundt) cakes, loaves, pumpkin cookies with choc chunks, pumpkin cheesecake, etc. Many freeze well for future use and let you get a leg up on Thanksgiving baking (in the States; Canada's is already over), or can be brought to work parties / bake sales / gift to the hostess when you go to a friend's house for dinner.

We live out in the country and we don't usually have trick or treaters.

Occasionally, we have and we give coins. Kids love a quarter in their sack.

We live 8 miles out of town. Our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away. Most parents bring their kids into town for a couple hours for the treating.

We live so far out in the country no one ever comes on Halloween. If a kid or two showed up I'd give a dollar bill. emoticon

I have done this for the past several years, I pick up things from a party store or even Walmart will carry little toys, pencils, erasers in the Halloween theme.
This way there is no candy in the house and the kids in the neighbor hood will have something to keep after the candy is gone and forgotten.

How do you get through the Halloween season without eating a ton of candy?
