Thank you, all! I was seeing a therapist for my eating disorder, but I was dropped from my insurance after turning 21. I was totally okay when I was going to therapy but as soon as I stopped is when my anxiety began acting up again. The past few days I've been taking Niacin capsules and meditating. The 2 combined have reeeeeeeeeaally helped me.

Until you know the root cause of your anxiety and panic attacks you will still have problems.
Do you know what triggers your attacks?
Do you see a therapist?
Medications aren't a crutch and you won't become a druggie.

Panic attacks come from our flight or fight instincts being tested. Sometimes you can't escape from a situation and you don't have the skills to fight it. It takes a human body at least 20 minutes to recover from a situation like that.
You should try to get out of the place where it's happening and find a quiet space to sit down.

I suggest that you learn some breathing meditation techniques--breathing can help relax you.

Hope you figure it out emoticon

CROTTYN,

When it comes to panic attacks or anxiety pretty much anything can happen and is believable.

I only came close to a full blown panic attack once. I was fortunate enough to get a hold of my therapist on the phone and she helped me prevent it from it getting worse and also helped be continue on to a meeting I thought I wouldn't be able to go to.

Anxiety is another matter for me. It seems to always be there even if a small 1. I have taken medication for a long time. I mostly take it to help me sleep now. I rarely need one during the day but have it if I can't get things under control. I have to be pretty stressed out to have my anxiety cause me to take medication during the day.

I don't like the thought of taking medication for it or the medication I take for my depression. Learning self soothe and self help techniques is great but if medication is necessary it beats hospital visits. I also know many people who have taken medication for awhile and have then tapered off and are doing well.

SDSMALLX3, Hopefully you have a Dr. or therapist who can help you with any decision you make regarding medication. It can be temporary for many people.

Dee emoticon

You may have an unconscious trigger. I have medication that just takes the edge off. I have it but only used it 2x in the last year. Use medication if it helps you get through but keep working at all those positive changes.

How did I handle panic attacks? Everytime I got one, I would pace up and down and tell myself this had happened before and nothing had happened. That would lessen the impact until I never had them again.
I wanted to mention this before but I was afraid people wouldn't believe me.

Over the years I have had panic attacks that warrented meds.. Just because you might need meds doesn't necessarly mean you always will. Look at it this way. The meds are there to help you out. If you had diabeties would you not take meds? If you take them and work with your d.r., they are not to be feared!

Good luck.

Janet

Earlier this year I got my first random panic attack in the middle of class and the side effects lingered for a good month before I got myself back to feeling normal. I had scary thoughts, horrible nightmares, but I somehow got through it without any medication- just positive self talk, meditation, and support from family and friends. Now all of a sudden, I've been getting random waves of anxiety. Nothing nearly as bad as before, but the pure fear of knowing what I went through before and possibly being able to experience again, is giving me anxiety. There are times that I'm just fine, and then there are times when I get super anxious and fight away the fear. I don't want to take medication because I want to learn how to cope on my own. What do you all do to deal with random anxiety?
