I use advocare products which have all but cured my anxiety. I started with the 24 day challenge in February and I am completely off of xanax, down to 5mg of ambien, and 150mg of wellbutrin. I am working my way off the other two slowly (no rushing). I take a multi, fish oil, amino acid supplements, and 5HTP along with a healthy diet, wheatgrass everyday, lemon, blueberries, and other healthy foods. I eat very little dairy. I eat fish and foul, coconut milk, and lots of water. I feel great. I have gone from 50 lbs overweight to exercising every day, energetic, renewed, and HAPPY! :0) Things aren't perfect and I do have bad days, but I feel 10000% better!!

Hi CANNIE50 and yes the side effects can be bad but in my case I rather put up with some of them and be balanced, it is a slow search of trial and error until you find the right meds.

Of all the stuff I have tried and have seen other people try and know the results, the only thing that works for anxiety is Vit B6, I can't have it because I'm allergic to B and get nausea instantaneously. There is a Vit B that is for allergic people and it's called P5P but it also makes me sick

St John's Wort never did anything for me or anyone else that I know, it might be fine for very mild cases like Valerian. It clashes with Thryroid medication and brings constipation. That is what it does to me and a couple of other people I know that have tried it for an extended time. The results for anxiety were negligible.
Kava makes me very edgy.

I don't tolerate any SSRI, they make my jaw clench, but I try every single thing that comes out. I'm on an old fashioned antidepressant a tricyclic one. There is also Xanax that works quite well ( benzo family ) but only people that haven't got a tendency to addiction can take it for a somewhat a long time (some months).
There is a new antidepressant based on Melatonin that is called AGOMELATONIN here in Australia but I think it's called Agomelatine in the US. It seems that is well tolerated but you don't know until you try it yourself. I haven't tried it yet because my next appoint with my Psych is mid May.

My doctor recommended Kava for anxiety, and St. John's Wort for depression. I have had too many bad experiences with prescription meds - I just cannot seem to tolerate them and the side effects (20 lbs weight gain, horrible withdrawal symptoms even though I very carefully and slowly tapered off). I am wondering if anyone else has used either kava or St.John's Wort - I am quite curious to hear about others' experiences. I am new to this team. emoticon

Glad to hear that the bar is helping. A lot of people mention that. Unfortunately I can't handle nuts and sugar, they give me the munchies.
CBT always helps, if I let it go too long I start being careless about my stress triggers and get into trouble.
I'm in Oz, where are you if I may ask?

Oh, and over the last couple of days I did have an afternoon snack and it helped a bit.

I realised the first day that I felt better when I had a sneaky bit of a snickers bar, maybe it boosted my blood sugar levels or something? Anyway, I don't want to eat Snickers every time or I'll be right back to stage 1 and back to 177lbs!

So on Wednesday and Thursday I had an Eat Natural bar (don't know if you get these in the States, but they are super yummy no artificial sugar or preserves or anything and chock full o' nuts and seeds) mid afternoon and it seems to work. I am going to try a low GI lunch (normally I have crudities and fruit) to keep a steady stream of energy going through my system and then maybe have a lighter supper or something to compensate for more cals at lunch....

Go, Beckett! It's nice to find a fellow fan!

I forgot to take my water with White Chesnut yesterday and you know what, I actually didn't feel jittery at all. Hmmm....is it the 2 and a half weeks of Vitamin B helping or the lack of White Chesnut? Or even the sun shining!? Who knows....I will keep an eye on it.

Got my first pre-counselling session today after almost a year. Hopefully re-doing the CBT will also be a help.

Hi Allison and Porcelina Vit B helps a lot of people that can tolerate it (it makes me sick).
I'm glad you're both feeling optimistic.

PS Porcelina I love Beckett and good quote from your Dad.

My doctor recommended B complex, specifically B100.
i've been on them now for about 3 weeks and I'm noticing a slight difference. I think you have to stick with the vitamins for a while.

I guess B vitamins stabilize the body's lactate levels - decreasing anxiety attacks.

After my last real relapse into the dark days of GAD I was perscribed a low dose of diazepam but I really didn't want to take it for a prolonged period, so after 6 days I thought - no, enough, take control. To be honest it didn't stop the mad, racing thoughts and horrible memories from the trigger, all it did was help me sleep really, really well. I weaned myself off them and have started on 2 tablets twice a day of a complex B vitamin supliment, I've started a new blog looking into loads of vitamin B rich food to munch on and also using bach white chesnut extract on a daily basis in my water which is supposed to stop repetitive, racing thoughts.

I am not sure if it working, I am not as tense or wound up or nervous as I was, though I still have symptoms. I am usually great in the morning and then after lunch it hits again but not as severe. I am going to alter what I eat for lunch and go for something more low GI to keep a steady release of energy going through my system. I think it hits when I am weak.

I find though that being busy, praying, having goals, achieving stuff and making exciting plans can help, so trying all these AND vitamin B and it's looking like a a slow and sure recovery, I hope. Once I start CBT again it might just kick the GAD's butt back to where it belongs.

Even though I wouldn't wish GAD on anyone (it's EXHAUSTING), it is comforting to know there are other people out there and I am not alone. Together we can support each other and we can conquer this.

Oh wow thats amazing. I might look into this as well. My anxiety has been very high lately and I really didn't want to go back on regular medications because I find the ones that work best for me interfer with other medications, and then I find myself constantly worrying when I have to take something that I'm going to take a bad reaction to combining things. Maybe I'll ask my pharmaist about this, this afternoon when we go in town.

Hi Lexi!

This is a great topic; very helpful for those looking for alternatives to medications. I myself have not done a lot of research into vitamins and supplements for anxiety and panic attacks. However, at one time I had considered going herbal for my bipolar and did research for that. As my memory recalls Valerian Root is supposed to help calm one and help one to get a good night's sleep. Other than that I am not familiar with natural remedies. I am interested in how you do with the magnesium and amino tabs. I hope it works great for you!

i'll be waiting to see how this works out for you. i've been on medication for my very severe anxiety for years and i'd be willing to try anything else to help get it under control because even with all the meds i'm on i still struggle with it constantly.
good luck.

I've been doing a lot of research for natural cures to anxiety. I don't have insurance so I cant get professional help/ even if I did I don't want to live my life on meds. I've found a lot of articles linking deficiency in magnesium and anxiety/ depression. Also, I've read B complex tablets and even amino tablets have helped people with their anxiety/panic attacks. I'm really optimistic about this and have decided to go out today and buy the magnesium chloride pills and amino tabs. I'll post every week for an update on if I feel any changes.

Has anyone else found success with any vitamins for curing anxiety/ panic attacks?

-Lexie
