Another place I have going is Emotions Anonymous. It is a 12-step program similiar to Alcoholics Anonymous. We work on the emotions we have problems with using the 12-steps. you can go the the international website and get information about if there is a meeting near you.

I have that too.

What I have done is before the event, I tell myself that I am just going to through myself out there, smile, be friendly, and strike up a conversation with a few ppl regardless of how long or short it is. I found that when I gave myself that pep talk, I tend to have less anxiety. i also noticed that more ppl felt at ease around me and wanted to talk instead of viewing me as stand off-ish.

A safe group environment is a good idea. Sometimes it is best to start out in your local mental health system. However, there are good community groups as well. I participate in both. They have really made a difference for me.

Recently I was given a pamphlet that listed a meeting I could go to (just drop in) that was for people with social anxieties. Everyone has the "same" issue there so you're supposed to be more comfortable there. I have yet to try it out, but maybe you could see if they have something like this in your area....

Hugs, Dee

I can address the part of not knowing how to express your feelings in a group setting. I can remember when I was in outpatient day treatment many years ago. They figured out I didn't even know what I was feeling. They gave me that sheet that the therapist give out with all the faces on it. In the first group, I had to look at the faces and tell everybody how I felt. Most of the time, I really had no clue.

I have a real problem with low self esteem to the point that I have anxiety attacks when in group situations in particular. I have a hard time expressing how I am feeling. I tend to see the world in black and white or positive and negatives. Would like to know ways to get over the fear of opening up in group situations. emoticon
