I totally get that. I went with my husband yesterday. I didn't want to, but I knew I needed to. I kept myself distracted by managing the list. Like that was a good choice for my husband. Every other isle, I was like, what about ketchup, and that was an isle or two back. Then we get to the end, and I was like, what about toilet paper, etc...etc.. He just laughed, We would be going down the isle and I would pass the stuff I needed and have end up and go back to get it. Frustrating, kinda like my cleaning, start here end up somewhere else. I am sure my husband was probably frustrated, but he was nice and didn't say anything. We managed to finish. At least I don't have to go again for a week. LOL

Cynthia,

I don't really get nervous about going, I just hate doing it, it's like a big chore and I put it off till I can't anymore. Sometimes I'll pick up a few things here and there but I hate doing the big shops, especially by myself because I get annoyed easily.

Like today, I did go (not alone), but people were annoying me left and right and I started to feel almost claustrophobic in there. I try to get in and get out as quickly as I can, but people were always in my way or moving really slowly and I was really beginning to get irritated.

At least I got some of the stuff we needed.

Oh geez I'm laughing so hard tears are rolling down my face! I don't feel so alone anymore now that I know I'm not the only one that avoids the market. Last week I told myself I was being ridiculous and that I COULD do it by myself so I set off to the market and ended up sitting in my car for 3 hrs trying to get the nerve to get out and go into the market. Sadly I ended up at home with no groceries, but at least I tried. I can do but I usually have hubby or one of my children accompany me. They chitter chatter and keep my mind focused on why I'm there otherwise I'll leave the store with no groceries emoticon

I, and only I, can make this happen!
No one can exercise for me.
No one is going to spoon feed me the right foods.
No one is going to love me more than I love myself.
And no one is going to do for me, what only I can do for myself.

I procrastinate on doing bills and housework. I don't mind going to the grocery store now that I have found one that I like. Some grocery stores trigger anxiety for me. For awhile a few years back I couldn't go into a grocery store without having a panic attack.

Katherine does it make you nevous to go to the grocery store?

Me too. Procrastination in work and at home. At work, I can keep it to a minimum, because, I can keep it seperate from my personal life. But, at home, I can never seem to finish anything, I start to, I plan to, but never get to it. Filing bills and such,I am terrible at it. My husbands jokes and says that my filing system is called the PILOT method. Pyle it here pyle it there. I never thought about it being an avoidance of anxiety.

I procrastinate alot, too. I usually put off grocery shopping till there's not enough food in the house to put together anything resembling a meal.

I don't enjoy driving like I used to, people annoy me. It's frustrating to me because I'm a social person, but my avoidance of crowds or new people has increased dramatically over the years. I hate being a hermit!

Yeah Izzy, procrastination is like a catch 22, you hate to do it so you put it off and it causes you more anxiety, and yet you know that if you do it, you'll feel better, but you still put it off.

The last two years I did my taxes ahead of time because the previous year it caused me way too much trouble. But other things, I still put off till the last minute... like groceries... I hate grocery shopping.

Katherine - I can't believe I reached this age and didn't relate my procrastination with anxiety! It makes perfect sense. I often wonder why I procrastinate over the simplest things - and usually it's cos I'm imagining some awful outcome if I actually DO the thing - like doing my filing and sorting through papers - maybe I'll find out I forgot to do my taxes?? I don't know, but I DO realize now that the two are connected and it just came to me like a light bulb over my head when I read your post!
When I was younger, I avoided SO much because of my anxiety and I regret sometimes that my kids may have suffered (although they tell me they didn't). I'd usually force myself to do things that I wasn't comfortable with cos I didn't want them to feel my anxiety. I avoided a lot of parties, movies, the theatre, etc. cos I was so anxious in crowds. I had a job where I HAD to travel all over the world, and let me tell you, there were times on a plane when I thought I was going to lose it completely.
Amazingly, with age, and with some serious work (using tapes from an anxiety and panic disorder clinic)I gained my life back. While worry, procrastination and small anxiety attacks are still part of my life, it's NOTHING like it once was. I go to parties, concerts (even went to the Stones' last concert in Ottawa and THAT was crowded!), movies, and have no problem flying....so there IS hope for all of us.
Bit of a ramble on my part....sorry about that :)

I know my anxiety helps with my procrastination. I put off lots of things till I need to deal with them, like getting groceries, making calls, etc.

I don't socialize much either, just on occasions with a couple of girlfriends I'm comfortable with. I try to avoid most parties etc where there is a lot of people I don't know there, weddings too, even though this last one I went to this past weekend wasn't as bad as I thought it was, the wine sure helped.

I did go out for breakfast late, so I avoided the worst of the crowds. I was still somewhat uncomfortable, but I didn't let it stop me. For my me time today, I played with a puppy. My grown daughter has a 10 month old St Bernard and I'm looking after the dog while she's out of town for a couple of days. My daughter thinks I'm doing her a favor, but in reality, it's a mutual favor. Playing with the dog is so relaxing and reassuring. Nothing compares to having a 100 lb puppy on your lap, LOL!

Thank you so much for your kind words and support. It made a big difference. You folks are priceless!

Hi!

I sure hope you got that "me" time in today. We all need special time to ourselves.

I'm not big on crowds of people, so I try to go at off hours or if I must go when things are busy I take a book or magazine to help take my mind off of the people. Even if I can't get comfortable to read I can at least look at the pictures in the magazine.

Izzy is right on. Eating healthy and exercising gives us our power back. After working out and buying that healthy food, take a bubble bath and play some soothing music or nature sounds. I love to listen to thunderstorms and rainfall, it has a calming effect on me. Hang in there we are here.

Two things that I KNOW make a big difference in controlling our anxiety are: 1)eat a good healthy breakfast and 2)get some exercise. So, no matter how busy you've been with other people, carve out some time for yourself. Go out and have a nice breakfast somewhere where it's not too crowded (no sense in stressing yourself out more than you need to). Then go shopping and fill that cart with healthy food. You WILL gain control back - I'm speaking from painful experience - and once you do you'll be SO proud of yourself and so happy. Baby steps....start taking them now. We're here for you.

I've been really stressed out the last few days, been super busy taking care of other people instead of myself. This morning I really want to go out for breakfast all by myself and find that I'm having a really hard time doing it. I haven't done my grocery shopping yet this week, so there's nothing good for breakfast in the house and there are a couple of great breakfast places nearby from which to choose. I just don't know if I can deal with groups of people today. I hate this feeling, I feel paralyzed and out of control of my own life.
