I'm doing literature review/setting up my experiments for my thesis this summer - the schedule's flexible, but I'm struggling to find the time to do all the things I'd like to do (got a LONG bucket list!)

Just take five minutes to regroup, and don't ever forget to make time for what makes you happy.

I'm a resident now... So I don't get summer vacations anymore BUT I do plan to study for and take a national exam BEFORE summer starts, then use my free time during summer to exercise/read fun books after work!

Working and studying for my comprehensive exams (PhD program) which will be administered during the fall term. To cheer me up (and provide a break from working & studying) I bought myself a membership to the local botanical gardens so that once a week I can go and get a nice walk in among the flowers and study in the sunshine.

Oh man, I miss summers. I'm just about to finish my 4th year in a PhD program that goes year round. We get a 3 week break between spring and summer semester but because we see clients, I'm expected to be around most of that time. So I really only get away for long weekends when I can.

And this summer my boyfriend is studying for the bar exam so it will be stressful here around the house. But that's one of us done with grad school, in just two short years, I'll be done too!

DEVINSHIRE1, Congrats on starting your grad program! I totally know what you mean about putting away your crafts and leisure reading....I am pretty much counting down to my break just because free time sounds wonderful! However, I always seem to find time for SP during study breaks!!

Camping with the fam sounds like a lot of fun-- enjoy it!!

You can pass your baton to me, then; I'm going to be spending the summer preparing to START my masters program. My husband is just finishing his masters, so our house is already full with the stress of postgraduate studies! My main goal for this summer is to start saying goodbye to certain things I love to fill my days with now, but that won't do me any good in grad school, like the 15 different craft projects I start and stop at random, or the growing pile of books on the bedside table...I'll need to start finishing them so I can replace them with NEW books come September!!

Of course we'll have some fun over the summer, too. We hope to get away with the kids for some camping or possibly a week at a place we call "Kellermans" (because it's like a low-rent version of the resort in "Dirty Dancing"!). Have fun working at camp! I used to love being a camper and I did spend one summer as a counselor, which was just wonderful.

I am so looking forward to this summer! It will be my last summer before finishing my masters program, so I decided to do something fun. I'm returning to a summer camp I used to work for and will be having a FUN summer before I enter the workforce full-time and miss my chance. I can't wait! Anything that gets me outside and playing with kids sounds wonderful after so much time spent in classrooms this past year!

Doing my Masters completely online and loving it. I can do the work from anywhere on the planet!

My focus aside from excelling in school, is simple

Eat healthy
Sleep healthy
Hydrate healthy
Exercise healthy

I do believe I see a trend here!

In health and wellness, with much happiness,
Di

This summer I moved to a new city, Boston, for graduate school so I have spent the summer exploring and getting to know the city as well as working as a research assistant at an Epidemiology Center on campus.
I will be traveling home this week for a friends wedding and to spend the week with all of my family at our condo.
Summer has been great so far!!

I managed to get an on-campus job. I'm also studying in Spain for a month this summer so I also found problems finding a part-time job. I don't have a lot of retail experience. I tutor and teach music lessons a lot so when they see "self-employed" and working on a MA, I don't get a lot of interviews :/

I took the summer off from classes. Only one left (stats) and I didn't think I could cram a stats class into 6 weeks! So working a ton of shifts while everyone else takes vacations and wondering what I'm going to do when I grow up...After all, I suppose once I have a masters I should get a real job, right?

Keebabe1: I think my suggestions would depend on your class schedule and what type of area you live in (city, suburbs, etc).

and the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
And the moon is swimming naked and the summer night is fragrant

Does anyone have a GA or part time job for the summer? I desperately need something but have never found a place that 1.) works around summer classes or 2.) wants to hire an "over experienced" doctoral student. Anyone else have that problem?? I'm not even looking in my field- just something for some quick cash. Any tips, ideas, suggestions??

I'm taking a class this summer, but it doesn't start until July. I had all of these grand plans to get work on my thesis done this summer but... yeah... May was mostly spent sitting in the park with a book! A real life, non-required reading novel! Imagine!

Congrats on finishing your first year!!! I just finished my first (of five years) as well but we go throughout the summer. I have 8 week courses and will then have a couple weeks off before the fall semester starts. So basically my summer does not start until then. I need to finish a lot of research in the next 2 weeks and then I hope to actually go camping for a few days after classes end. I can't wait for those few weeks off!!!

Working as a student worker in our department (no more papers to grade though!). Studying abroad in Spain in July so I'm hoping I can solidify some good habits to take with me before I am put in a new environment that will probably throw off my routine!

Academically: The law program I am in recesses for the summer so I am currently working. I am crazy though and considering applying to a biology PhD program in the fall (my undergraduate degree is in applied biology). Thus, any studying I do this summer will be for the GRE.

Weightloss: I want to be at my goal of 130 by Sept. 7, 2011. This means I really need to focus on solidifying my fitness routine and eating habits, especially if I want to avoid backsliding before the school year starts up again.

Travel: Not so much. Starving student and all that.

I'm in a 22 month program for my MBA, and we won't stop. We get a week off for Memorial Day, then keep on going.

Hello everyone! I'm pretty new to SP and to this group. I'm about to head to campus to print and hand in my final papers to complete the first year of my PhD program! Summer is just around the corner! And I'm curious, what are everyone's summer plans? You can answer related to academic/travel plans and/or diet/exercise goals.

As for me, I'll be traveling (including going home to California) for a few weeks, and I'm planning to take a language class in NYC during July and part of August. I'm worried that the changes of pace and place may disrupt the healthy habits I've been developing, but I'm optimistic that with the help of this site I'll be able to keep focused.
