That is terrible. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the fires will be out soon. My heart goes out to anyone that loses a home and neighborhood.

I have heard bad things about FEMA's response in other places. Sad....

That's just awful, Wendy. Very sad situation.

Right now we've got some fires burning in an area here in Central Texas about 67 miles from where I live. (We're in no danger where I live, although the conditions for wildfires are favorable here, too.) In 2011 Bastrop County was the scene of the worst fire in recorded Texas state history when over 30,000 acres burned and over 1,200 homes were destroyed. This week's fire has destroyed over 4,400 acres so far in that same county and is only 10% contained today, I believe the reports say. My heart goes out to everyone involved, as well as concern for the safety for all the firefighters.

Tiffani drove me around the fire area. She was right....it looks like a war zone in some places. Only things left standing are the chimneys of those who had them. Everything is black, crisp, and covered in ash. Reminds me of the devastation that Mt. St Helens created all those years ago.......black and barren. Was really interesting to see it.....FEMA is still present, but not neccesarily welcome.......they've really dropped the ball here. Its a pretty sad situation all around.

I'm glad your family is safe. How awful for all those areas that were burned! I can't even begin to imagine what those residents are going through.

My kids live only 3 miles from the Butte fire that blew up last month. I am there now and will get a tour of the fire area this week I'm sure. Daughter says a lot of it looks like a war zone.

That's good news!
I know that sometimes rain also comes with the threat of lightning and more fires, so hopefully the conditions will stay wet and calm. I can't imagine all the stress everyone has been under there with all the devastating fires around the area.

I'll be meeting my daughter and two of her three children this afternoon for the week-end at at water-park hotel. I'm going to take my coloring books, plus some lettering examples so that my 12-year-old granddaughter and I can practice some different lettering styles -- when we're not tubing down the man-made river, of course!

I've never tried to melt crayons, and I've never done any encaustics or batik, but I bet those are all something I could really get interested in. I've melted wax over decals or other pictures on the tops of small soaps, and there's something about watching that wax melt that makes you want to do more.

I keep finding so many great craft ideas on Pinterest, but I'm pretty much sticking to collage in one journal and drawing in another right now.

I don't know how many others of you are on Pinterest, but sometimes you'll see a "Pinterest Fail" where someone has tried one of the projects and it turns out an absolute disaster. So funny!

I'll have to brag on my youngest granddaughter who just turned 12 at the end of May. She saw one of the projects (that I've seen many bad copies done) and re-created it perfectly! It's the one with all the crayons lined up at the top and then melted, so that the colors all drip to the bottom of the canvas. Claire added paper flowers with buttons in the centers to her artwork. She told me that the hardest part was peeling all the paper off the crayons!

My grandson's birthday party will be this afternoon at one of those loud, hustle-bustle gaming centers. I really don't know what to expect, but my daughter-in-law always buys a big, irresistible cake. I'm telling myself I can have one, small piece, but no more than that.

Still working in my cereal box journal -- which I think will pretty much be a long-term project at the rate I'm going! I have a small yarn mola that I saved from something long ago (maybe a greeting card?), and that will go on the front cover. I haven't glued it on yet because I'm still working on the inside pages. But maybe I should go ahead and do that and get a photo posted!

Hope everyone is having a good summer!

Wow - I am really impressed by the sound of your creation as it is beginning from scratch. I have not as yet followed the links - but I definetely will. I would really love to see your end result as it sounds like a mixed media collage. I also enjoy working with a variety of materials from scratch. Oh gosh the beads and then painting - how many times in my rush I also wish I had taken a different route. However the end result is always an original so do not worry I am sure it will be amazing.

Hi, PITSAKI -- Yes, so far I have used this particular journal only for painting. I may end up doing some collage pages, too. But right now I'm enjoying the painting with acrylics.

I made the journal by combining two of Jennibellie's techniques that I found on YouTube. She has one video titled "How to Make 100% Recycled Art Journal from Cereal Boxes"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec04
rV
h0ndU

and two others of "Make an Art Journal by Recycling Greeting Cards."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyi3
Ve
93We4
(Part I)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2oF
xN
cf2TE
(Part 2)

Some of my pages are maps, wallpaper, and card stock. I put a coat of paint on all the pages before binding it, stenciling some and stamping others. I used different colors of yarn and beads on the spine, and now that I'm painting pictures on some of the pages the beads along the spine are getting in my way. Right now I've got them all wrapped up in a baggy so that I won't get paint on them! Wish I hadn't put the beads on first. I haven't done any journalling on the pages yet -- just painting for now.
- - - - - -
(edit) Just checking this, and it doesn't look like the links are working because for some reason they went to more than one line. If you care to see the videos, just go to YouTube and look up Jennibellie. Sorry about that.
Doesn't look like the links work by copying and pasting, either. Drat!

Hi, Everyone! What are you working on this summer?

I'm mostly painting with acrylics in one of my journals that I made from cereal boxes. I've been copying pictures from magazines and photos that I've found on Pinterest. Not my original compositions, but it's fun and it helps me to learn how to mix colors. I've been doing a lot of shading with my wax or oil crayons and creating background patterns with stencils and prints made from recycled items such as styrofoam trays.

Hi All, I have missed y'all very much. I have been super busy!! My step-children's mom has been here twice for over a week each time, in the past month. I taught her to quilt and we have had a blast!! We got out my huge tubs of scraps and cut out pieces for a 24 square "Greek Cross" quilt. I got my blocks finished and decided I am going to do my first "quilt as you go" with it!! I am so excited to get this quilt finished. In pulling everything out, I found two other quilt tops (windmill and friendship star) that I haven't finished, so if "QAG" goes well, I will do those, too!!

The Delta Fair will be upon us soon, and I want to go on and start my projects for entry. I don't want to wait until the last minute this year, as our house is on the market and I don't want to have to create while trying to pack and move... My first entry project will be a chicken applique apron.

I will share pics as I get things finished!!

Have a blessed week!

Welcome, JacksGran. Somehow I missed your earlier post.
Sounds like you're enjoying your new sewing machine, F8CONE8!

I keep cutting photos and letters and words out of magazines and newspaper ads, but have not done anything with them lately. I just need to tell myself that it takes only a few minutes to cut and paste and create a fun collage!

I cleaned off my art table, I had wrapping paper and stuff on it, and I plan on putting my paints out and trying this method to get me motivated, For me clutter makes me nervous, but my house is cluttered, so I need to make time to work on that also, its not like I don't have the time, my husband likes to come home and watch TV, and he likes to spend time with me so I sit and watch it also, then I never get the ump to get back up and do anything else, So today I am making a pledge to myself to sit at least 1 hr. less watching tv and do something else.
Well time to get ready for work, hope you all have a great day.

Chatting about the weather --
I live in South Texas, and we are due for our first freeze of the season tonight. I've got my potted plants in the house and my outdoor faucets wrapped, so I'm ready for some cold weather for a change!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
I've been getting things ready and packing for our family reunion which is held at Thanksgiving every other year. When my mother's parents died in 1965, her 8 brothers and sisters, who were spread all across the United States, decided that they needed to plan to meet regularly so that they wouldn't lose contact with each other. My mother's two youngest siblings are the only two of that generation remaining now -- and they are 83 and 85 years old. I'm so thankful that they are still with us and that our family can continue the tradition.

I am still working on my queen sized quilt. i think this will be a long term project but I need to make some place mats which should be quick. I want them large enough to cover a wide area and pretty enough to be decorative. I've never made them before so I like the challenge.

Does anyboby remember me? I used to come over to this fab group in 2008, I must Admit then I abandoned all my spark plans... I got married and we've got a two-years-old baby... She's my whole life... I must admit I ate a lot during my pregnancy and well... Two years later, I still can't lose wight... Till now! I've decided not to quit and and get fit!
Some of you may remember me as I liked to contribute with ideas and I was always asking things, specially when I had to deal with project that included new techniques...
So here Am I my friends! I hope you can reach all your goals.
May Lord Bless you today... and always...

I've managed to log in everyday for a year now -- even while on trips! I'll be taking a trip to the McDonald Observatory in West Texas at the end of this month, so my streak may end then.
After I drink my water today I'll have a 161-day streak for that, too. Drinking all my water is finally a habit!
SparkStreaks have really helped me to keep my goals on track.

Wow! You did amazing at Olive Garden.

I love the salad too and it is loaded with oil like you said. The bread sticks are okay. They are not homemade, so they aren't as tempting for me.

You really did good at one of my favorite restaurants!

I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is 'Abortion', because it is a war against the child... A direct killing of the innocent child, 'Murder' by the mother herself... And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts...

I went to lunch today with my sister and saw some nice art work at the restaurant. Single words repeated with rubber stamps, most of them forming rectangular blocks of type, and all about 30" x 30 " on a white mat. I know I'm not describing them to do them justice, but they were all very interesting.

I agonized today about whether or not I should meet friends for lunch at Olive Garden. I wasn't sure I had the will-power to control my selections and portions. But I did it! I'm a little high so far on the carbs percentage today, but I can even that out later. Ate a serving of the minestrone soup (164 calories) and 1/2 of the lunch portion of the capellini pomodoro (240 calories). Passed up the breadsticks and the dressing-drenched salad. Not only did I enjoy seeing my friends, but I stayed within my calorie limits, too. WooHoo!

Somehow we didn't get any Christmas cookies made, but we did make gingerbread muffins and gingerbread men-shaped ice from the little muffin mold. Painted wooden ornaments, made foam ornaments, and made homemade applesauce. Both groups worked on separate Christmas plays and presented them to the family on Christmas night. Had a wonderful time!

Oh-the jewlery crafting sounds awesome-be sure to post pictures!

Sorry I've been MIA a few days 'crisis' in another team that I co-cappy, but have the dust settled now ( I think) and I've been working on cross-stitch bookmarkers and refridge magnets to include in some Christmas cards ...

ALMOST finished with the 'over-sized' afghan' and I put a picture of it and a few other projects in my Sparkpage photos...please do drop by!

Playing with some watercolor pencil ideas as well but nothing to 'reveal' there yet...LOL

I've also been hiking several times this week and trying to 'eat clean' to balance Thanksgiving dinner coming up!

Have a great evening all!

Good for you to get back on track!
I've really got to watch it this week-end. Going to lunch today with friends, out to eat tonight with another friend before I go to the symphony, and then tomorrow is my grandson's 4th birthday party -- cake and hot dogs! Portion control, portion control. SELF control!
My grandson is having a tractor party, so today I am making a little birthday book for him using John Deere stickers. Gotta get it finished!
