I do most of my training on trails and I was fully expecting my shins to freak out during mile 2. They actually were ok. I will have to say that I am enjoying trail running more and more. I even bought my first pair of trail shoes.

The track work out was great. Those sprints are tougher than they look.

Great post! I have also been guilty of saying "only" the half. One day I was driving on the highway, 13 miles from my destination when I realized how far it actually was. So amazing how our perspective gets skewed.

I love this thread. As running has become such a large part of my and my husband's life, I know several people who have completed several marathons (my husband included), and all of a sudden completing a marathon is becoming more commonplace in my world. It made my two 13.1 runs seem a little puny in comparison, but thanks, I needed the reminder that each mile of those races and the training put in for them were well earned. I have another half scheduled in July, and I have decided to tackle my first marathon in September (haven't signed up for it yet though).

I am guilty of saying "only" the half or "only" the 10 miler. I wish I didn't. This is a good reminder not to diminish the accomplishment or distance. What's interesting to me is that it's usually non-runners that comment to me, "Don't say only!" or "That is SO far!"

Distance becomes relative to runners rather quickly. I remember when 4 miles felt long. Now it's my quick run. Last year while training for a full, 13 didn't sound that long. Yesterday's 13.1 was very, very long!

Respect for every mile. Thanks for the reminder.

This thread is a great one! I want to try the full marathon someday, just to cross it off the bucket list, but still proud of my halves :)

Good comment ON2VICTORY!! I love racing the Half! Anyway, no matter the distance, we runners EARN every step of the way, whether it's 1 mile or 13.1. Don't let anyone (including yourself) diminish that accomplishment!

What a great post!!! I love this. I remember when I did my first half, I thought it was a 10 mile run to the toughest 5k I have ever done.

Those are great words of advice!

I didn't know that people felt down about a half-marathon only being half... it's such an amazing feat to me that I'm intimidated about being able to do it!

i ran a full marathon last fall...somewhere around mile 20 i started asking myself why i was doing it...it took me 5.5 hours to complete...it was an awesome accomplishment, but i doubt i will do it again...that was an awful lot of training hours to get ready and i suffered quite a few injuries along the way. i like halfs better. i can complete them in 2.5 hours and still get the rush of completing a long run that most people cannot do. It is still a great accomplishment and i just keep signing up for more. emoticon

keep runnin'!!!!!

I agree. Its set my teeth on edge to hear anyone say "I'm only doing the half."

Only? Really? "only" 13.1 miles. I think twice before driving 13 miles. And now I'm out there running 13 miles? Damn sure ain't only.

And I have done the full twice. It isn't my distance. It wasn't enough fun for all the work I put in.

Anything that has to do with running is awesome! No matter the distance. If you are running happy in spirit and heart than you are accomplishing more than any other regular Joe and so much more than a finishers medal! Every step is a badge of honor and courage, that's just how I see it.

Go out, get it, and be proud of it! emoticon

Thanks for that reminder. I just did a half yesterday and of course you get the comments of so when are you doing a full. I personally don't have any interest in a full. I also come back with a comment about something about when are they going to get off the couch. It typically shuts them up. emoticon

Lenny,
I'm a trailrunner and don't care much for level, hard surfaces, but track has some great opportunities, in particular to improve running form and introduce a little speed work. Have fun!

I am supposed to do some track work this week. We shall see how that goes. My coach will talk me through it but I have never trained on a track before. Should be fun :)

Great point!
For people who think HM's are not something to be proud of try some sprinting (or even watch some on youtube). 400 meters can be a huge accomplishment and if you talked to sprinters implying that the length of the run reflects the accomplishment be ready for a good laugh. I just recently joined a track club and even 100 meters can be harder than a HM for me.
What matters is not the results anyhow but how much effort we put in.

Birgit

This is from a runners group on Facebook. Really makes me feel better about running half marathons. I just want to really stress about the BEER part. :( I miss my Three Philosophers and Chimay and.... emoticon

"13.1 Miles... It ainít half of anything!!!

I remember running my first half and thinking, ďOh, Iím only doing the half.Ē Excuse me? Iím ONLY doing the half? NO. No, no, no, no, no. Iím running 13.1 miles. THIRTEEN POINT ONE MILES. Iíve trained for 3 months, giving up most of my Saturday morning sleep in time to get up and run. Iíve forgone the Cheetos for Cheerios. Iíve swapped the brewskis for water. Iíve chafed. Iíve been sore. Iíve lost toenails, had blisters, pulled muscles. Basically, Iíve worked hard to get to the point where I can run more miles in one morning than most people will drive the entire weekend. So this is a big reminder to me and to all half-marathoners not to cheapen the distance. Itís COOL to be a half marathoner. No, it's not the big dog, but that doesnít make you any less of a runner. Be proud of your accomplishments! Youíre able to run 13.1 miles! And that is pretty frickiní sweet.

- Amy (The Bookworm Wife)"

So for all those who are bummed that they are only doing a half...keep your head up. If the big dog is in our future, so be it. If not, then enjoy those half marathons.
