I finished my first half on May 4 in Vancouver, BC! It was an amazing run. Even though it was raining, the course was beautiful and I ran confidently and strong. I finished in 2:14, which is a full 16 minutes less than I was aiming for! My awesome husband, who's much more athletic than I am although not as dedicated of a runner, finished in 1:46! I'm so pleased and proud of us!

Finished my first half marathon today, the Flower City Challenge Half Marathon. I'm happy with the race I ran, finishing a bit faster than McMillan predicted from my last 10K or 15K race results. Chip time 1:32:20, gun time 1:32:24, 76th of 2242 finishers overall at last report, 1st of 75 in the male 55-59 age group (by 6 seconds), and ahead of everyone older than me.

I finished my first half last Saturday, March 22 in Mt Zion Utah. I had been battling problems with my it band for the past month and would you believe it started hurting in mile 2. My sports doctor thinks it is due to the higher altitude. I did finish but time was lousy, we didn't get to go hiking Angels Landing after due to the fact that I was down with ice on my knee. Great time though, and cannot wait to do it again. Just really need this knee and it band to stop.

I ran and finished my first half marathon (Santa Hustle in Indianapolis) on December 15th. It took me right around 3 hours. I am registered for the 500 Festival MIni-Marathon in Indianapolis in May. And am toying with idea of running a full marathon in November...still slighly undecided on that though. emoticon

I can't remember if I posted... But I completed my first half in March and got 3 minutes under my goal time!

Now I am getting the bug again and will be preparing for another half in September.. My goal after that is to complete a full in 2015!

Congratulations to everyone else who has completed a Half!

My first Schaumburg Half and Turkey Trot

Felt good until mile 12 and I could feel every bone in my body screaming in rebellion

At mile 9 I started walking and jogging to ensure I met the better than 3.5 finish I wanted

What was interesting is that I walked at a much better pace than in training so did not need to add any jogging at first

Walked the last 2.1 up two damn hills ugh what a cruel joke

I am happy it is over only because I now have a real half marathon time

My next will be equally as good or better - taking a rest day tomorrow and back into walking mode Monday

Thanks for all the help - I did it and I am so proud of me

Thanks Nanlewykw! I am so glad! I walked a 5K with my daughter and did a shopping spree on Sunday. Calves are just as sore as if I was training. Ok, good to know the guideline. I can milk some TLC from my family a little longer....

Amy, the general guideline is to rest one day for every mile of a race, so you are definitely still recovering! You don't have to stop running entirely for those couple of weeks, but certainly take it easy, and if you're exhausted, that's okay. Try to fit in some activity, even if it's just walking, but otherwise, don't worry too much about it for another week or so.

What do you think? I ran my half marathon a week ago. I am so exhausted!! Am I still recovering after a week? Or am I a mom just pulled in too many directions? I want to start a new program, but I am just tooo tired!

OH! I finished my first this past weekend! :) Finished it in 2:32:40, which is right where I wanted to be (preferably under 2:30). So happy with it. Right after finishing, I thought "why did I do this??", but later that day and the following day, I thought "HECK YES, this is awesome! I can't wait for my next!"

I think it's going to be in late May in northern VA, it goes through wine country (can you say hilly!?) and is bound to be a gorgeous route.

I totally forgot to post!

I completed my first half marathon a few weeks ago, a perfect day all around. I wanted to make it under 2hr and 30 m inutes and I did! I ran 2 hrs and 28 minutes. I loved the route, the weather, the people. I loved everything about this race. the only thing that got to me around mile 9 was my hip- I went from a 1030ish mm to a huge range of 11-12 mm.

So..this morning I mentioned to Josiah my 12 year old son that I was thinking of moving the date of my walking half marathon up because I was afraid it might snow in November and be to cold for walking. Josiah said "Let's do it today." So we tied up our laces and went for a 13 mile walk. I am so proud of Josiah. The last three miles were a killer but we made it. Our time was 4 hours 45 minutes. We walked for ABC House an organization that helps children who have been abused with things they need like counseling, medical care. etc.

I ran my first half yesterday! It was the Chicago Monster Dash, and I ran it pretty spot on to my plan, so I delighted. Finished in 2:10:14, which I am very happy with! Everything went well, and I actually crossed the finish line with too much energy still left in me. :) I'll know better for next time! I'm already looking forward to registering for the marathon next October.

Finished my first half on Saturday in the Land of Oz. Came in at 3:29:13.5 and 511 out of 525. Not too shabby for my first time. Definitely need more consistent training before I try that again, but the feeling of crossing the line with my kids was amazing. They met me just before the finish line and cheered me on and we all four crossed together.

Ran my first Half Marathon last Saturday. I use the Jeff Galloway run:walk method of training and is what I used to run my half. I ran 3 minutes/walked 1 min/ran 3 minute intervals and finished in 2:35.57. I am really excited that I didn't have to take any additional walk intervals and finished with energy left! Maybe I'll try another one next year even!

CONGRATULATIONS!.....on your half. I have learned that distances of more than 10K are a completely different experience for me than the shorter ones where time is more my focus. With distances, I find that the experiences of training and recovery are a better guage of the success of my running.

Finished my first half last month and never thought I would be saying that! I cried in high school when my track coach signed me up to run a mile. I've always been a sprinter, NOT a distance runner!

Started running seriously in January of this year and decided I was just going to sign up for a half and my goal was to finish... running, walking, or whatever it took. Trained for 14 weeks and ran on 04/20/13. Finished about halfway through the pack with a time of 2:22. I was hoping for a better time but was so amazed I was able to finish! I'm signing up for another in September and after watching all the training I've been doing, my 8, 6, and 4 year olds want to start running with me. I'm signing my 8 year old up to do a 5k with me next year. :)

On my way to the best shape of my life... care to join me?

Walked my first and only half so far this past April 2012. 3 hours and 16ish minutes. Which for me is a good pace. In my long walks in training, I was tending to do 3.5 hours. The local half marathon in my new state/city has a 3 hour cut off and I am going to try and see if I think I can do that, and then sign up. But it is the weekend after thanksgiving and we usually travel at thanksgiving and I sleep horribly in hotels. So not sure if I will do it or not, or look for another one say this fall.

3/31/12 Trailbreaker half marathon 13.1 miles in 3 hours 13 minutes
4/20/13 Neighborhood Watch 5K 39:17.6
10/5/13 5K Grace Pet Fest 38:47.6
12/1/13 Secret City Half Marathon around 3 hours and 4 minutes
4/19/14 Butterflies for Hope 5K for Lupus 39:23.8 (I hurt my back a few days before, and though it was my first official 5K with some jogging, my back hurt, so was very slow.)

Walked my first half on 5/4/2013.... The 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. I was 1:03 over my goal time. But as everyone tells me, I finished!

Well, not really my first half. I ran two halfs in Sept and Oct of 2011, none last year and this past Sunday I ran my third - my FIRST SPRING HALF. What made this different is that the prior two events I had all summer to prepare for and were BIG races. This one my longest run of the season prior to the race was 10.5 miles and it was a very small field. I found myself running alone for a good portion of the race on an absolutely beautiful river trail in Illinois. I had to be my own motivation when the going got tough and although I've run a faster half and a slower half, I consider this one to be my best to date!

Well, I completed my first half last Saturday. Primary lesson learned: don't have surgery the same week as a half marathon. Also, after training in pretty mild weather for three months, the actual day of the race the temps soared to high 80s--low 90s, which made the latter part of the race very tough. But! My goals, especially after knowing that I was going to have my pacemaker replaced the Tuesday before, were to finish and not be last, and I accomplished those goals (actual chip time 3:19). (I don't run--I speed walk. Under optimal conditions, I can manage between a 12 and 11 minute mile, but this of course wasn't optimal conditions.)

I'm 50 and finished my first HM yesterday. I did the Let's Move Festival of Races in Mt. Clemens Michigan and finished at 2:44. I'm really happy with that time.

My biggest lesson learned is to dress lighter. When I left my house it is in the 30s and by the time I finished the race is was in the 60s. I dressed too warm and stripped off layers during the race. I wish I left one layer at home and wore lighter leggings.

I'm hooked!!!! emoticon

My next HM is the Detroit Free Press International.

It was a real slugfest! Struggling with an upper IT band strain, I had to walk it and at a reduced pace... but I finished and I was not last... 10993 out of 11480! Woohoo!

I remember my first, the starting line nerves, the preparation, the race expo excitement etc.... there is nothing like the very first one. A word of advice to all first time HM'ers... your long runs are the most crucial. The speed work, tempo and other technical running techniques are ok but its the long run that really preps you for the big event.

This is where your fueling strategies, pacing, hydration issues are all hammered out. When you run under varied conditions, you will get a pretty good handle on what clothing will work best under what temps, how tight your shoes need to be laced... all of the little things that will make or break your race experience.

think of each long run as a race rehearsal....

race day should offer no surprises. If the unexpected does happen, and it usually does, you will have gone through the routine so many times, it should be second nature.

it will be worth it all when they put the medal around your neck.

Hearing these experiences will really help when it comes to my half marathon in October.

OK, I'll start this off. I ran my first continuous mile in 30 years on Dec. 26th, 2011. My first 5K race in 30:46 min. on 3/24/12. My next race was a half marathon on May 6th. Honestly, I did not think I would even finish but I did it in 2:25:52. I wasn't proud of myself so much as amazed. In all, I ran in sixteen races in 2012 including three half marathons, a 10K and twelve 5Ks. Although my times have improved, I still got the biggest thrill out of realizing I could handle that first half marathon. That was the race that made me a convert.

Now I am truly bitten by the bug. This year I am registered to run two half marathons and two full marathons and have a bunch more penciled in. I ran four 10K races in January, three 5Ks, a 15K, and a four miler. I also completed two thirty mile runs in an online marathon challenge.

I just read a blog or an article, I forget which, where runners like me were referred to as "extra mediocre". I like that term. I'll never be super-fast, but at sixty years old, I'm really happy to know that I can run at all.

One thing I totally love about running is the enthusiasm of a first time half marathon finisher. Nothing beats the sense of accomplishment and pride you feel when you cross the finish line.
