The Run Through the Jungle 5K is a fun run that benefits the Exotic Feline Rescue Center outside of Brazil, Indiana. It was last weekend, but a blast. Next year is the 10th running. The last mile is through the paths that make up the Rescue Center.
Color Run is another fun run
Warrior Dash is too, especially if you'd like to try doing a Tough Mudder....
Since the Tough Mudder series has been mentioned by several people here, a related article from today's Washington Post:
"An Ellicott City man died over the weekend after an accident on the Tough Mudder obstacle course in West Virginia, the first such death in the three-year history of the outdoor run that bills itself as “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet.”
"Avishek Sengupta, 28, was with a half-dozen friends on the course Saturday when he jumped from a plank into a deep pool of muddy water, a friend, Dan Gemp, said. Sengupta did not resurface and was pulled out after several minutes by a diver on site, Gemp said."
I had never thought of a trail run! That sounds like something I would like to try and there's one in my area in Oct...hmmmm. I also like the sounds of the glitter/color run. Thanks for the great ideas. Now I have to see who I can drag along with me!
For anyone looking for something totally different I found this: http://rundezvousrace.com/?page_id=87#Abou t
The Rundezvous Race, 1800s survival skills race! With knot tying, fire starting, trap making, hatchet throwing and more! Not my bag but someone else might like it.
I'm doing two Color Me Rad races that are going to be in my area, one this month and one next month. They also have something called a Glow-in-the-Dark 5k sometime soon and a few Zombie runs. And in July, they are having The Sparkle Run. It's glitter plus color. If you let me know what area you live in, I can tell you if they will have it near you.
KCFEMME,Yeah the color run does sound fun. I was not dissing 5Ks by the way (just put that it's only a 5K since CASECK25 had mentioned looking for longer than 5K . Totally agree if you're going to run anyway it can be much more fun in a race.
PASTAFARIAN, thanks for the tip. I'd like to try trail running sometime.
Have any of your races been trail runs? For me, trail runs are a nice compromise between (boring) road races and (insane) tough mudders. I'm good with an occasional splash through a stream, sliding my butt over a log, etc.
It's also delightfully quiet in the woods. And I like the continually varying terrain - much easier on my ankles and knees than repeating the exact same motion again and again on pavement.
The color run is a blast. Yes it's only a 5k, but it's a good one to get the kids out to, set up a team with friends, etc. There are also Glow Run's and Foam Runs. I'm signed up for Half's, a full toward the end of the year, but the 5ks are great for your training. If you were going to run that day anyway, why not get a t shirt for it.
Check out active.com for a lot of the races in your area. Also, a lot of the running sports types of stores have flyer's at their checkouts for local runs as well. You might find something interesting there.
Look up the Tough Mudder. It's 10-12 miles. There are a couple people at my work that have been talking about wanting to do that. I personally wouldn't want to do a run where I have the potential of getting electrical shocks...but the rest of it sounds cool.
I also thought color run sounded fun - but that one's only a 5K.
So I have been running HMs for a couple of years now and I am looking to change things up this year. I want to run races that are more than just running a long distance, I want to do some fun, interesting, challenging races. I am already signed up for a Mud Run next month which I am SO looking forward to. What other different kinds of races are out there that are more than a 5k? Are there any fun or different HMs or Fulls?
