I mapped out a 12.12 mile route that I only need to cross one road twice that sometimes makes me slow down or stop. But I have managed to do the 12.12 in 3 hours, so I am close to doing a HM in 3 hours. I think on race day, I can do it, so I have signed up. I have added in a bit of jogging downhill only, but jogging to me is hard and I still don't like it.

wow - maybe my 2nd will be in under 3 hours. I am doing my first half Nov 30th and am looking for 3 1/2 hours. I did a 3.1 training walk the other day and I did it just a couple of minutes shy of 3 1/2 hours.

I know race day I will be excited and that will help me do better.

I know if I continue with this that I will continue to get better and faster. I am already looking into my next race to keep the training going

It is doable. I did my last 1/2 marathon walking at 3hr 1 min. The people I was walking with were ahead of me and time was under 3hr by 5 minutes. My time has just gotten faster the more I walk. I walk with a training group and if I go every weekend and walk at least once during the week as they say I should my time has improved. I think the consistancy is what helps improve your time. It also helps being in the group b/c then you can continue to try to catch up to the people that are ahead of you.

Have you looked into racewalking? Racewalking is different than traditional walking. Racewalking is still walking in some sense but the stride is different and it's more demanding aerobically as you go faster. However, from the description of your walking pace, I'm guessing that you are very fit.

Of course, the best thing about racewalking is that you can go much faster than traditional walking. Sub-3 HMs are easy for racewalkers.

Trill: I have wondered about that. Broke my toe a few summers ago, carrying the recycling into the garage and down one step and sometimes it bugs me, but not so much yet. I do need new shoes though and yes, I do find walking faster is getting hard. Not sure why I insist on walking, but I like walking, and have never liked running/jogging. But could try it, if I don't think I can do it in 3 hours. Used to be jogging bothered my asthma, but now that I am diagnosed and on a preventative, they may not be the case anymore. But somehow when I was a kid and would run, and I couldn't breath, just kinda made running something I avoided, except when playing, etc.

I use to do straight walking half marathons. When I went from 15 minute miles to a faster pace I started getting injuries. At least for my 5' 3" height I needed to walk kind of unnaturally and I started having issues with one of my toes. When I started doing some run intervals I actually felt better. Just a comment, in case you are thinking that doing some running will necessarily me harder on you body. I did 15 second run 45 second walk and managed 26.5 miles in 6 hours. When I did my marathon I actually did 30 sec/ 30 sec and did 5 hours 21 minutes.

SK....
When I ran and walked my first HM, my goal was to make it in under 3 hours. I barely did and I was running part of the time.

I think I used a run 20 seconds, walk 40 seconds interval.

If you are close to 3 hours just walking .... I think you are doing AWESOME.

My thoughts are that I will start training for a half, and if I can get close to 3 hours, then I will sign up for it. My last half marathon was faster than any of my practice times. Maybe, I can do it. I just have my doubts. But I do want to sign up for a HM this fall, once the heat of summer is over with some time to train after it also. If I can't sign up for the 3 hour time limit one, then I can sign up for one I have to drive a bit to. Oh, and I may contact the organizers and find out what happens if one doesn't meet the time limit. I see that last year a few people finished in 3 hours and 5 minutes. I mean if I can go faster than last years 3 hours and 12 minutes, then I should be fairly close and maybe they would let me finish. I just would hate to be so close and to have a did not finish. The hard part also is that it is the Sunday after thanksgiving. I wonder if we did travel at Thanksgiving, an 8 hour drive, then drove home on Friday, then I had Saturday to rest and go to the expo, then do the race on Sunday, would I be recovered enough from traveling? I rarely sleep well in hotels, no idea why.

Skinir,

If you e-mail the race organizers and tell then, they will let you know the "real" cut off time. Often the streets must be opened, but walkers can continue on sidewalks. Check on how long the finish line will remain open.

Sorry to hear they stuck a 3 hr max time limit on it. I'm walking my first HM next month. I am not as fast as you (yet). Wishing you all the best. Let us know what you decide.

Definitely agree with the group that intervals is the way. You prove you have the endurance because you've done it before.
Best of luck to you.

Is there a possibility to mix jogging and walking? If not I would sign up for a race that does not have as strict a time limit. This one is clearly trying to discourage walkers.

Perhaps you can make up a little time with a few jog intervals so you can get under that 3 hour time frame. That's some awesome walking BTW...great job!!!

Hmm .... If you can walk a 15-minute mile and don't take breaks, you could finish in three hours.

I walked my first and only half marathon last spring in 3 hours and 13 minutes. I would like to do another half marathon this year and am a walker. We have since moved to Oak Ridge, TN, and their HM is right after Thanksgiving. My main problem is that I don't know if I can do the HM in under 3 hours and they have a 3 hour cut off. Any other walkers manage to walk a HM that fast? I know for you runners, that is not a fast speed. I just would like to do another HM and tend to not drive for them, etc. ANd I am getting rather discouraged. I mean to do a HM in 3 hours, I need to walk an average speed of a 13.74 minute mile, which I can do, but I don't think i can do that for 13.1 miles. Today I walked a 5K in 41 minutes, but can't keep up that speed indefinately. I know I have plenty of time to train, but not sure if I want to, if you know what I mean, especially if I just fail in the end.
