You already got some great answers but I'll put in my two cents. I totally agree with checking with your healthcare provider first. It is far better to suffer the sting of dumping a race than to make things far worse by getting injured or keeping the injury from fully healing in the first place.

Time spent healing and recovering fully is time well spent.

I am also a fan of waiting until an injury is fully healed and doing what you can without hurting yourself. I found that I had hurt my foot while doing step classes, but it didn't bother me when I was running, so I switched those high impact cross training activities (step/kickboxing/Zumba) for low/non-impact activities (swimming/more indoor cycling classes), and my foot has thanked me for it, especially since I'm in training for a half marathon in 2 months!

I agree, heal completely and wait for the next HM. As you know injuries are horrible, and you want to stay healthy this time. Wishing you the best!

I'm a fan of the "heal and get strong first" school of thought! My hip was "almost" solid when I started training for my 2nd HM last spring. By the end of July, I was sidelined and ended up with a deferral to 2013. It was a frustrating few months, and who wants to extend that with recurring injuries?

Best of luck for a fun & healthy 2013!!
K:)

Rebecca,

Oh boy can I relate. I developed a calf injury training for the Marine Corps Marathon last September which forced me to defer my entry until 2013. It was by far the most heart-breaking decision I have ever had to make in my almost 7 years of running. This was my first 'real' injury and less than 4 weeks from my race, I made the decision that my goal was and will also be to run injury free so that I can be a life-long runner. I found my new running coach and he has vowed to help me train smarter, so I am slowly building my pace and I am finding the benefits to cross-training and ancillary exercises.

I wish you a speedy recovery! TRAIN SMART!

Coach Nancy,

I went to my GP for the pain and she sent me to a PT who found the tear. It was small but he said small or not it is a major injury. I have not yet asked him on the thoughts of what races I can tackle when.

Actually my gut says just focus on full recovery and on the HM in September. But I really wish I could do it.

This being my first injury (and hopefully last) I was humbled that even a little bit of pain can turn into, a MAJOR pain that affected even my ability to walk. In the end I learned A LOT and have been given tools to improve my running. I can see the positives in this.

Rebecca,

What does your doctor think?

Just my opinion, but a tear is a big-time injury and because you are not 100% I would take the conservative approach and see how your training goes, especially because you are encouraged to change your form.

November/December the pain I had been tolerating in my calf turned out to be a tear. Through physical therapy I am about 95% recovered and have been allowed to start running. I have to re-learn how to run making sure I have a mid-foot strike (I had been a heel strike).

Last year I did my first half marathon and was quite pleased with how I did. I am currently signed up for two HMs this year. The first is April!!!! So my question is, having had completed the distance before and continuing to be active (stationary bike and weight training), does it even seem possible to be ready by April?!?!?! or should I just bag it? I DO NOT want to injure myself again.
