My first half marathon was great!! A little sore still but it was worth it. If you want to read the full review I have made a blog entry that you can see here http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_j

I have a half tomorrow, too! I like some of Timothy's tips... be prepared today and you'll feel less anxious. Lay out all of your 'stuff'. Figure out what time you need to get up. Make sure you get to the event early so you aren't rushed for time. Figure out what you'll be having for breakfast, and make sure you have everything you need.

Then, today, drink plenty of fluids & stay off your feet quite a bit. Maybe go to a movie or read a book for a distraction.

For tomorrow, don't have a time goal. (Hard to do, but worth it!) Just go and ENJOY! Soak in the crowds & the excitement! You have EARNED your spot at the starting line, and be proud and have FUN!!!

I wish you the best & let us know how it goes!!!

Trust your training. Remember, you can always drop to a walk and gather your thoughts and strength. You will do fine. Run from station to station and suddenly you will be done.

Promise.

I have a ritual I follow before a big race. Set out my gear, set up the rice cooker with my steel cut oatmeal, wake early, get dressed, showered, shaved -- I make sure my neck is not scratchy, it is distracting -- coffee, oatmeal, checklist, out the door to the line 60 minutes before the horn to make sure the oatmeal has time to "work it's magic," then I run.

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you will be doing the impossible -- St Francis of Assisi

It reads like "fear of the unknown". Don't dwell on it...go to your race ready to run and have fun. The excitement of the race, and the energy of the crowd will get you going. Run at your pace and you will do fine.

Good luck to you. Just remember to smile for the cameras....they are everywhere!

Are you sure that it's not pent-up energy from your taper? I know that I was practically exploding with excitement by the eve of my first HM (last week!) emoticon

You've trained, you've planned...now go ENJOY! (then come back and tell us all about how great it was!) emoticon emoticon

Don't try to set any records. Since this is your first half it will be a PR anyway. Try not to focus on the time or your pace. Focus on having fun. Interact with the spectators. See if you can get them to cheer for you. Talk to others on the course. Have a blast on your first one.

You've trained for this and YES - you ARE ready! Just relax and enjoy the experience...there are plenty more halves in your future to stress about -this is your first- just savor it! I especially like the advice of breaking up the course into smaller segments.

When it's tough just go with the mantra...trust your training. It helped me get through my first half. Also when I was struggling with the last 5 miles I envisioned that distance on my normal daily runs. I knew that I had that distance down easy so knew I could finish strong.

You've got this!

If you trained up until your race day, you'll be fine. I signed up for my first half and ran it the next day. Don't worry, I was training for a different half and had in mind to run this one first. I didn't really have time to be nervous. It's an amazing experience. I agree with what SUSIQZER said: break it up into little increments. You can do this!! Make sure to report back and let us know how it went!! emoticon

Trust your training.

I actually let go of my race performance. I hope to do well, but remind myself of how much more fit I am because of the my training. If something goes wrong with the race I still have the improved fitness.

The thing that helped me most was taking a look at the course map and breaking it up in my mind. So it wasn't 13.1 miles, it was 5 to point A, 4 to point B... and those smaller increments seemed more managable.

Have fun!!!!

If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.

My stomach has been in knots today because I can't believe it's finally here! I keep thinking back to when I signed up for this race and when I freaked out after hitting the checkout button. I can't believe how far I've come but I'm still nervous that it's not going to go well. How do you relax before a big race??
