That's a great article!

I'm with Logould, though...when I think of tiny races I think of something more like 100-200 entrants. Even the small 5Ks around here are usually at least 300 runners.

LOGOULD, Chicago certainly has loads of tiny races. I don't live anywhere close to Chicago but 5 minutes with a search engine and I found plenty. Just in HMs are these two:

Polar Dash HM - 741 finishers last year
F3 HM - 811 finishers last year

Great article - I've had many of these concerns and experiences....except for the tiny races. We don't have any of those up here in the Chicago burbs!!

Thanks for sharing. I hit the asphalt as much as possible. I remember reading an article, last year, written by Coach Nancy about training on the surface you plan to run your race on.

I've never panicked over coming in last (and I have accomplished that particular feat) but I have panicked that the aid stations would be out of gatorade, water, and ice. Sadly, I've found this to be an issue with large races as well as small.

The way I look at it now, if I come in last I've just helped someone else meet his/her goal (to not be the one)!

Nice chart in the Washington Post giving some broad insights on course differences. (Written about marathons but makes sense for HMs too.)

I especially like the observation that flat courses are no panacea.

The only one I can find anything at all to critique is the bottom row. My suspicion is that it's just novices that have these particular concerns. You'll get over all of these concerns (even the "coming in last" issue). But the concerns raised with terrain and surface are something you can never get over and always have to pay attention to.
