I agree, go for it, but have a back-up plan in case it sells out before you can register.

I ran my first full last summer, by far one of the coolest 'personal best' moments of my life, outside of marriage and my children. I plan to do it again this fall, Lord willing :)!

I would add, though, that for me the training was more daunting than the race. Pick your plan carefully. This time I won't use a plan that has a 10 mile run scheduled for a Tuesday, for instance. I'm a wife, mom, school nurse...my week day runs need to be a little less time consuming.

Go for it! There's no time like 2013 to scratch full marathon off your bucket list! I'm training for my first this year (April 28th in Gettysburg) too. It just felt like the natural progression after the half marathon. I'm finding the actual physical training is not too bad so far but super time-consuming compared to training for the half. I'm using the Hal Hidgeons training program and there's a weekend long run, two short runs and a mid-week semi-long run. The mid-week run is up over an hour long now (6+ miles) so it takes some planning but I can't wait for the big day!

Just a thought here but I did a race with Team in Training and they have slots reserved if you're willing to do the fund raising required. The Marine Corps Marathon is one they sponser.

I've never ran the specific race or a full marathon. I am thinking of running a full marathon this year. Just wondering how I should prepare and how much rest I should put into it. Have you chosen a training plan yet?

the idea of a full marathon scares the crap out of me. I will do one one day. I want to do the big sur marathon on the ca central coast. Its so beautiful there. I am going to sign up for the 21 miler for 2013 unless its full by the time i can pay for it!

I am changing my life one day at a time. I am creating a physically and mentally stronger version of myself. I am a work in progress, and I am determined and committed more than ever to accomplish my goals.

MCM registration for the general population was on 27 March 2012. I don't know the other dates, but it opens first to Marine Corps personnel and I think dependents, then to other military, then to the rest of the world. With the rise of long distance running's popularity, even the our Marines, who do this all the time for training, have caught the bug. Once they are all signed up there aren't a lot of slots left for their bosses ... the civilians. Hence the three hour sellout.

I agree with everything Tim said. I'll add that it's a huge race and very crowded - particularly through the first half and also before the race and afterward. So it brings with it all those problems. For instance, the instructions say to be there 2 hours early. Parking is impossible or expensive. The nearest Metro station isn't open. I could go on but surely you get the drift by now. It's just crazy. I would not do it again.

But my experience is mostly HMs. You might want to repost your question over in the Marathon Team area since you're asking about a full marathon. Many of them have done a variety of other marathons and may give you a better perspective.

In my experience I'm running Toronto waterfront marathon in 10 days. All the weekly long training runs are a must don't miss those.

16 week program is all it takes.

I say go for it if you have the time to train! I am strongly considering a FM myself, and I'm thinking I'll join the local Run/Walk club so I have company on those long runs..

Go for it. Find a good training program and make all the runs.

I have not done MCM but I will be there this year as a spectator with my camera. I plan to cover the entire course. MCM sold out in 3 three hours this year. Only three hours. May I suggest having an alternate in mind?

I am starting to think about events for 2013 and may actually consider doing a full marathon. Has anyone done the Marine Corp Marathon in DC?
