I totally agree with the slower pace building block runs! I think most of us run faster than we should during 'easy' runs, and am working on that. It can be tough, I run trails that have a lot of younger runners who are zooming past me. It's not an ego thing, I just have to force myself to stay at my pace.

WOW! What a great and timely question TAGPOINTE!!! My next real event is also in November, but I too, lost a lot of ground this past winter. Thank you everyone for your words of wisdom. It has alleviated many fears of not being able to get back into good enough shape.

Hey, Nancy, thanks for the reminder of why I should do more slow and steady. And not just because it is so darned hot right now that even 5AM runs can be brutal.

Just as there are a number of Training Programs, there are also pre-training programs. Try doing a simple search on "Half Marathon Pre-Training Programs" and see if you come up with one you like. I recently signed up for one from Runner's World where they e-mailed the plan for each day in a two week pre-training timeframe. That was handy and even though I was not yet at two weeks prior to my training, I made a folder for each of those e-mails and saved each one so I can pull them up when I am at that point. You can also download the full pre-training program all at once.

Hi Tagpointe,

I am gearing up to start marathon training in the next week and a half and right now I am just building a solid aerobic base. In other words, my runs are slow and comfortable (I am not worried about speed or pace) and are done at a much slower pace than when in training. The reason an aerobic base is important is you are laying down the capillary network for your training. You are allowing your body to depend on a greater percentage of fat to use for energy and most importantly you are keeping your injury risk potential low. You want to head into your training healthy and ready to run.

RUN SPARK HAPPY!

between races I keep a regular running schedule that includes 3-5 miles twice a week (for me it's Tuesday/Thursday), with one day being speed work, and one day being hill work, and continue to do a long run on the weekends between 7 and 10 miles - it's been working for me for a couple of years.

I should have asked this a while ago but I'm struggling to figure out what I should be doing before my training plan starts. I have about a month and a half before I should start and I'm kind of wondering what I should be doing specifically. The race is in November and my running has gone down quite a bit which I feel is a symptom of my lack of a plan. Help!
