i've had a whopping 13 dislocations of my left shoulder, where the humeral head is right out of the socket and has to be reduced back in at the hospital... far more painful than any other injury including breaks and sprains or 3 c-sections. i was able to start running again after about 3 weeks, as long as i kept my shoulder tight to my body

Hey!
Saw someone else dealing with a shoulder injury so couldn't help but comment!
I have dealt with a separated shoulder in the past and they can be quite tedious to heal. After I had surgery I had to wear a brace and wasn't able to run for about 6 months after surgery without pain. If you need a brace the one I got was pretty good here is the link to it! I hope everything heals up well! www.braceability.com/shoulder-braces

Sue - I hear a rotator cuff is pretty nasty. I'm sorry to hear you are still having issues. Hopefully you can get some normalcy back in your shoulder!

Carolyn - I am very lucky, yes! I had a good helmet on too, but it doesn't do much for the neck. I grew up riding horses at a very young age, and I'm surprised with all the spills I've taken that way that I haven't done much worse to myself.

Thanks for the input! :)

Tiffany - you're lucky that you didn't land on your head. You could have gotten some bad neck injury. if it makes you feel any better, I had lost control on a descent when I had my injury. My problem was that I didn't brake when I should have.

Sue - I think torn rotater cuff trumps separated shoulder. That, I understand, is very painful.

I tore the rotator cuff in my shoulder but no separation (also mountain biking!). This was the longest injury I had ever had to heal, and painful. I don't know how it compares to a separation, but for me it was weeks before I could move my arm without pain. I hope yours isn't this severe or lingering. I found it was really slow to heal and my shoulder has never been quite right since. Sorry, I don't mean to discourage you... I hope it is quickly comfortable enough for you to get back to running, but that might be a long shot in just a few weeks. Good luck!

Great changes yet to come in 2012!
Updated my ticker to a new maintenance goal weight of 136, and will flip back to the maintenance ticker when I get there.

Ouch Carolyn!

I was going down and around a turn on the trail, the dirt was loose and I lost traction - so of course I do the one thing you should never do - I hit my brakes hard in a panic. I went flying over the handlebars and landed right smack on top of my shoulder. I definitely knew something was wrong with it though! I've had my fair share of injuries but this one has been the worst so far. However, I've taken 2 weeks off work and I really think that's helping. Glad to hear you were back in the saddle so soon. Here's hoping I can heal and can be back soon too! Thanks for sharing!

I had a mild separation, also from mountain biking. I was going downhill when the edge of my handlebar clipped a tree trunk. That turned the wheel into the direction of the tree, and I hit the trunk with my shoulder. Thank goodness I was wearing a helmet because I bounced off the tree and landed on my back and my helmet hit the ground. I also had a hematoma from just below my knee to my ankle on the inside of my leg. I wasn't a runner at the time, but I was back to riding about a 3 or 4 weeks later. Honestly, I didn't have a lot of pain from the shoulder and didn't even know I had done anything to it. I went to the doctor several days later to look at my leg and started pressing on my shoulder which hurt a little. He took an x-ray and that's when it was discovered that I had the separation.

My hubby and I went downhill mountain biking a week and a half ago. I took a nasty spill and now have a Grade 3 shoulder separation.

My half is coming up (25 days) and my orthopedic surgeon told me to operate based on my pain level. I haven't tried running yet, but the pain is getting better. Thinking about trying a long walk tomorrow or Wednesday and seeing how I feel.

I haven't made any decisions one way or the other on my half (it's my very first, I've been training all year, so I'm going to be super bummed to miss it. However, if it's what I have to do, then so be it).

But I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar injury? How did you feel after 4-5 weeks?
