WOW interesting discussion. I worry about other dogs because we have had some rush towards us and then last week I saw a family of raccoons but they turned around before I could really react. Not a gun person - not experienced and would probably shot my own toe off!

When I go alone early in the day or anytime around work, I usually carry the clip on type pepper spray.

Like WONDERWOMAN, I have spent the majority of my life around weapons so I am not afraid to carry or use.

Depending on where I run, I either don't carry anything or sometimes carry a hand-held jogger model pepper spray. Here's a link (Saber 3-in-1): http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s
ervlet/Navigation?storeId=10151&catalo
gId=10051&langId=-1&searchTerm=mace
But honestly, I'm not sure how well it will work if put to the test. I'm contemplating joining Rhonda. Timothy, yup, we are strong, independent broads. For me, I'm ex-law enforcement (civilian) and husband retired law enforcement. Guns are a part of our lives. In fact, a friend who teaches the concealed weapons course here frequently borrows my .22 for class.

I don't, but there have been a few early morning runs I wished I had some with me. Once a coyote got a little close, another time a runner scared me (there was just something creepy about him, but he left me alone so he was probably harmless). Regardless, I am going to get some pepper spray to carry.

During daytime trail runs I usually carry my pepper spray. I bought it from Road Runner Sports and it velcros around my hand (called runners defense spray). During my early morning runs (3 am) or on high mileage days when I may be gone for an hour and half or two, I carry my pistol. I bought a concealed carry runners pouch. Other than the weight, you wouldn't know it was there. My hubby insists that I carry it. Like he says, he wouldn't expect me to come home for a couple of hours and that is a long time, if something did happen.

Job 12:7-10
7 "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you.
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

When my wife was out training on the streets she would carry her pepper spray. Never needed it, tho, but she insisted that a couple of guys eyed her down enough to make her consider unsnapping it.

I've run in the early mornings for a couple years and never carried more than a set of keys, but they can be used as a weapon, too, if need be. Anyway, I've never considered carrying anything, but I do make sure to keep my head up and pay attention to my surroundings and wear light colored clothing.

One time, recently, I ran late at night - which to me seemed exactly like running early in the morning - and my wife tried to insist that I carry her pepper spray, but I managed to leave the house without it.

The only time I've ever had any potential problem was the one time I came up on a coyote or two attacking a house cat. The coyotes ran off and eyed me from distance, but never threatened me in the least bit and had disappeared by the time I came back through.

Most of us are probably in good enough shape that we could outrun any attacker, tho. That reminds me of a controversial commercial a number of years ago with Suzy Favor Hamilton in it. She gets chased through the woods by a masked attacker until finally he doubles over out of breath and she continues on running away with ease like it's just another training run.

I don't but have thought about it. I really want to run in a local park but leary about being on trails in the woods by myself. I know you can get mace that clips to a sport belt and comes off easily to use.

there are some hand helds too and I believe one on your wrist that you use the other hand to operate so no chance of it falling while trying to use it.

Especially now that it's hot, I'm already carrying water, phone, bandana (to swish at deerfly), beans, tp BUT I think a spray is a great idea - and once I get my CWPermit, that too!

OR - is there an app out there yet...I could just add it to my phone!

We live in the boonies and my husband came up on a couple of dogs that had just taken down a steer and the dogs charged him so he thinks I should carry my 38 when I run. Love the idea of carrying a shotgun--just too heavy.

I carry Mace. I have had guys approach me before when I was out running or walking. I rarely go out alone....but when I do I feel like I need something. And I figure it would help (hopefully) if a dog was charging. Honestly, I don't know how I'd really react. BUT, at least with the Mace my husband feels better about letting me go. :)

TIMOTHYNOHE,

LOL, a shotgun would be good training too. You'd definitely get your upper body work out, or you could strap it to your back like Lara Croft (Tomb Raider).

I haven't invested in anything yet, but I need to. At this point I think I would probably resort to throwing snacks to distract them. The biggest problem is dogs is young ones who don't understand "go on now" or "go home."

I've thought about it. A shotgun is effective (nobody will ever frack with you if you're carrying that), but a little too heavy.

I never really thought about carrying anything, I've just trusted that my training (karate) would let me beat off a dog who tried to attack. Unless I carry it ready in my hand I wouldn't be able to get to any kind of spray before the dog attacked and I hate carrying anything in my hands when I run

I generally don't carry anything but I do know someone who recommends carrying a small "horn" by boaters. It is very loud and will scare off dogs.

Do any of you regularly carry some type of spray to ward off dogs/attackers? My kids were walking our beagle and a mastiff attacked them. They did great!! Kids and dog are ok. But, it made me re-think about carrying something to protect ourselves.
