Here is a great web resource for secure shoelace knot tying. With practice they are just as easy as your standard knot, but much more secure.

My husband showed me something called an Army Knot. When you first cross the laces for the first part of the knot, go under twice instead of once. Then, when you "make the bunny ears" for the next step, the bunny goes through twice instead of once. My laces have not come untied since!
The Yankz, iBungee, and Lock Laces are all great, too!

Don't think, just do

I just recently started to use the pull cord clip & it works great. I just finished a triathlon with them & it was good to not have to tie them up & worry about them undoing.

I've had a couple pairs of shoes that have rounded laces - one Adidas, the other Rockport - and while they look cool, they will loosen even if I double knot them.

For instances like that, I've seen a few people use the cord pull clips on their laces - the kind that you use on stuff sacks for sleeping bags and such. Those are a nice QUICK way to lace your shoes. No knots involved!

We use Yankz for my son's soccer cleats and they are AWESOME! He is the only kid on his team that isn't constantly having to stop and tie his shoes. :)

Very many thanks to everyone. double-knotting doesn't help :-(
i am going to try the method at runner's world suggested by earniesmom (though i worry i'm too old to change how i tie my shoes from a granny knot to a reefer knot) but i've also ordered a couple of pairs of Yankz. this group rocks!

I, too, double knot. Otherwise I cannot manage to keep my shoes tied. Congratulations on your 10K, by the way!

I double knot my shoes all the time. Running, work, going to the store... I've never had them come undone during a run or a race on any of my shoes.

Try a pair of Yankz. My friend bought them for her hiking shoes and loves them. I have a pair but haven't tried them yet. emoticon

I have to double knot, even on shorter laces. Mine invariably come untied otherwise!

I've been using the method desribed here since my second 5K. In my first, my shoes came untied multiple times!! Since then, not once.

I double knot, then tuck the loops into my shoe (between my shoe & ankle).

One option would be to get a pair of Yankz. Those you just pull on because the laces are elastic; it takes awhile to find the right tension, so you may need to mess with them for ten minutes or so the first time, but then they are just slip-ins. Many triathletes use them.

I haven't ever had that problem with my ASICS, but I do with my hiking shoes so I ALWAYS double knot those. My laces are always very long though on my running shoes, so when it really matters, I make sure that those are double knotted also.

how do you keep your shoe laces tied? are there special laces that work better? i broke the golden rule of never changing things by changing my laces yesterday because they occasionally come undone ... but the new lovely rainblow shoelaces came undone twice ... probably cost me at least 2 minutes in my 10 k (which was nonetheless a PR by 7.5 minutes -- but also last in my age group of 60 and olders --- though i came in ahead of about 80 people younger than me!). seriously, i am really tired of having to retie my shoes during runs -- what do you all do, please?
