I've been talking to my husband and we're thinking about trying to mee the New York Road Runners' 9+1 requirement in 2012 to earn guaranteed entry into the 2013 NYC Marathon. (We'll probably leave NYC in the next couple of years, so we'd like to do the race before we leave.)

That means we'll have to complete 9 NYRR qualifying races and volunteer at one event in 2012. Some of the qualifying races are short (e.g., 3-5 miles), so I think it's doable - more of a scheduling challenge (and a "getting up at 5 am on a weekend" challenge). Also, I'm thinking that running 9 races (plus the additional non-NYC HMs I'm considering) would help me build up the capacity to train for a full marathon in 2013.

I've also spotted one other HM that looks interesting to add to my current plans - the late September Wineglass Half Marathon in Corning, NY. The race is fast and mostly flat (some downhill), through some towns that are supposed to be charming, we get champagne, a wineglass and a medal designed by a local glassmaker, and upstate New York would make for a nice weekend getaway.

So RunDisney's announcement today is helping me cement my fall schedule a little more. I'm taking the Wine & Dine half off the table (about 90% sure of that anyway) and will plan on running their new/resurrected Tower of Terror 10 Miler instead, which is the weekend that W&D originally was going to be. Ten miles should be an interesting distance - never done a ten mile race before. So now I have:

Disney Half Marathon (1.7.12)
Disney Princess Half Marathon (2.26.12)
Wisconsin Half Marathon (5.5.12)

I'm planning on but haven't registered for:
Madison Mini Marathon (8.18.12)
Disney's Tower of Terror Ten Mile (9.29.12)

Also in my plans, but not really confirmed yet, is a fall marathon (I don't know which one?!) and maybe another half marathon in there somewhere. I'm seriously undecided right now!!

I can tell you that 2012 will NOT be another 50 race year. I keep telling myself I will not do more than 20 races and I have done a good job with not committing to races. It was quite a year, but here is what I have on the schedule tentatively for HMs:

14th Germantown HM (Germantown, TN) - 03/18 - with a friend doing his first
Jesse is Awesome HM (Little Rock, AR) - 05/13 - good times with friends
Madison HM (Madison, WI) - 05/27 - with my aunt
5th Soaring Wings HM (Conway, AR) - 10/27 - pacing

CALIFORNIA-GAL - You mentioned registering for Washington DC in late March. I don't know of any HMs in DC in that time. Or are you talking about something other than a half?

Oh wait, now I see that RnR on the 17th. I'd call that "mid-March"!!

Oooh, $95 is pricey - particularly for a race that could be canceled due to weather. Ah, but it's probably not likely. We're supposed to have a mild winter. Good luck anyway!

I love this thread because I'm trying to figure out what I want to do for 2012. There are some great ideas here. So far, I am registered for St. Petersburg in February and Washington D.C. in late March. (The D.C. one scares me. I wonder if it will be snowing?!)

I am registered for the Portland RnR Half in May. I am also stuck on a boat (on a boat, on a ...boat) when I wanted to run the Hippie Chick because my mother-in-law booked a family cruise. I am debating doing the Helvetia Half in June again to see if I could beat my first half marathon time, but am not sure yet. I am 80% sure I will run the Girlfriends Half again in Vancouver, WA in October. Beyond that, I am winging it. I'd like to do 3 halfs in 2012.

Feb 4th - Busselton HM - my first :-)
April 15th - Canberra HM and probably the 5k or 10k the day before with my friend
August 12th - Sydney City to Surf 14k

And depending on when I book a trip to the US I'm considering my frist marathon to be either Kauai Marathon in Sept or Hartford marathon in Oct or Cape Cod marathon in Oct
and depending on when we head over there I'm thinking of also doing the Niantic HM and/or Big Sur Trail HM

They'll probably be some other 5 and 10kms mixed in there as well depending on what's on in my area :-)

@KKINNEA - If my sister-in-law does it, I might, too. However, doing 4 halves in 37 days is still one level lower (3 moons) than doing 2 halves in 2 days (4 moons). I would need to do 4 in 9 days or 3 in 3 days to move up a level.

The only race I know I'm going to do for sure is the Flying Pirate April 22. I'm also flirting with the idea of doing the Palmetto Half April 15, but I'm trying to decide if that's too crazy. I would also like to San Diego RnR in June, but I have to see if I can get the finances together to travel for that one.

TYKXBOY - I actually used to live near Hollywood and Vermont. I would say that the parts of the course that are on Sunset and Hollywood are flat, The portion on Vermont is a mild up hill. But, bascially all of Cahuenga is a pretty steep hill. I'm pretty sure I'd want to die by mile 12.

I put my name in the lottery for the New York HM on March 18, which would be halfway between the Myrtle Beach HM in mid-Feb, which I've registered for, and the Wenatchee WA I'm planning in mid-April.

Of course, the odds are that I won't get in, but since I might only be living in NYC for another couple of years, it's probably worth starting to try to get in now.

@KKINNEA - I accidentally stumbled across the Hollywood Half Marathon, yesterday. It was actually a suggested link in g-mail. LOL! I'm sure my wife and sister-in-law would love it. I wonder if either of them will decide to do it. If they do, I may end up running it, too. That would make 4 HM's in 2 months! :-P At this point, tho, I'm not planning on running it. It looks nice and flat except for the hill at the end.

Based on running Vegas last weekend and my schedule below, I should be able to qualify for Half Fanatics at the end of January:

Jan: Polar Dash HM (MN) and Securian Winter Run HM (MN)

Feb: Nothing yet but I'm also running a marathon this month

Mar: Get Lucky HM (MN)

Apr: Looking at the Hollywood Half Marathon with SDJ

May: New Prague HM (MN)

Jun: Minneapolis Half (MN) is too close to Grandma's but may look later in the month

Jul: Chicago Rock and Roll HM (IL)

Aug: 13.1 Minneapolis (MN)

Sep: Looking for suggestions on the weekends of Sep 15-16 or Sep 22-23 so it's not too close to Twin Cities

Oct: Monster Dash HM (MN)

Nov: Looking for suggestions on the weekends of Nov 10-11 or Nov 17-18

Dec: Dare I tackle Las Vegas again? Looking for suggestions

I'm going to throw a blog together too - I do want to make 2012 the year of the half!

I agree on the headphones deal.. I used to run with them until I registered for race that prohibited them... and then I found out that I love running music-less!

Planning to shoot for Half Fanatics next year.
Roanoke Canal Half Marathon 3/11/12 (Roanoke Rapids, NC)
Raleigh Rocks HM 4/1/12 (not a RnR, and no hydrant water, to my recollection!)
RunRaleigh 4/15/12 (this is a new one, pretty excited about it!)

Also kicking around doing the OBX marathon for my 2012 marathon.. only 1 per year for me! It's a nice, flat course, I should be able to take some time off of my first full from this year!

Tons of other races sprinkled throughout, plus a sprint tri (maybe)

Don't think, just do

I'm still figuring out a lot of my 2012 schedule. So far I'm only actually registered for two:

Disney Half Marathon (1.7.12)
Disney Princess Half Marathon (2.26.12)

I'm planning on but haven't registered for:
Wisconsin Half Marathon (5.5.12)
Madison Mini Marathon (8.18.12)

Also, Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon, assuming I can get off of work. Disney hasn't nailed down the exact date, but it should be late September/early October. I'm also interested in Quad Cities, since one of my friends is planning on running her first full there - don't know which distance I'll do yet, though.

My definite races:

3.17.12 - Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam Half Marathon - Lake Mead, Boulder City, NV

4.21.12 - Labor of Love Half Marathon 1 - Las Vegas, NV
4.22.12 - Labor of Love Half Marathon 2 - Las Vegas, NV

Possible races:

6.23.12: Running w/ the Devil Half Marathon - Lake Mead, Boulder City, NV

Most of my races are smaller races (500-2,500 runners). I love the energy of the crowds in the first part of the race and at the finish line, but once I get tired, I tune out the crowds until the end. I also hate large races because the large number of people makes it hard to run my own pace while doing a continuous job of dodging and passing other runners.

Right now I don't have a lot set in stone for 2012. I AM registered for:

Disney Princess Half Marathon, February 26, 2012

Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon (my first full!), April 1, 2012

I'm sure there will be some 5ks and 10ks sprinkled throughout the year. I may do the Nashville Women's Half Marathon again in September. And depending on how my first full goes here near home, I'm considering doing the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon (I'm originally from Indiana) in November 2012. Whew!

I'm doing the Quincy Half Marathon in March halfofquincy.com/ because it is local and I might be able to get my cousin to join me.

I'm going to be running my first full in November 2012, so I'd like to fit in another half a few weeks before to get a sense of what my goal will be for the full. Looking at Zooma Cape Cod, zoomarun.com/capecod/ but will consider others.

I've done both crowded races and empty ones, and for me personally, I'd rather run a crowded race. I get motivated by the cheering, the signs, the bands, the goodies and I always run faster in those conditions than I do on my own. I did the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco in October, and it was crowded and active, and I had a blast!

I train by myself (I have two little ones and it's too hard to commit to meeting with a group right now) so that could be part of my enjoyment of crowds. emoticon

I think people are motivated by different things. I don't like crowds (I'm almost crowd-phobic), so I would prefer smaller races (no Rock n' Roll races for me). When I did my first HM in October, though, there were a few people (anywhere from 3-dozen) people at each of the water stations along the way. It was nice to be greeted and encouraged by them - and I felt more of a connection to these few people, as compared with a crowd. But that's just me.

As for the Jail-Break HM, only 80 people did it last year so ignore the 500 figure you mentioned. I've done several HMs of that size and it is basically like running alone or with one other person most of the time. Expect zero crowd support.

As for whether big crowds and fanfare are important, only you know for sure. I don't train with big crowds supporting me so I don't need it during the race either. I tune out the spectators. Too many of them are yelling inaccurate info anyway. (Anyone yelling "last hill" or "1 mile to go" is always wrong.)

I have not yet run a Half-marathon, so I have been looking around for a good first race. My DD and I are considering the Jailbreak Half-Marathon in Wisconsin at the end of April. It will be quite small, fewer than 500 runners in the Marathon, H-M and 5K race. It will lack the bells and whistles, like bands every mile or a big Expo, but it will not have crowds of people to trip over either.

Opinions on this? Will it be more help over the finish line to have big crowds and lots of fanfare? We like the idea of this race, because it will be held in our old hometown, we haven't been back in 10 years.

I concur! I used to run with and after I did my first race without I loved it so much that I no longer run with music at all!

While I train with music and audiobooks, I like to race w/o the ipod. It *really* is cool just to take in the race, the surroundings, the crowd, and chat with the runners! Give it a try!

Hi MGJARVI - My husband and I just registered for the Myrtle Beach HM. Unfortunately, I was reading the fine print afterwards and discovered that the organizers prohibit headphones in this race, because the course isn't closed to traffic. I can't imagine running without music. I wonder if they really enforce the prohibition?

EMMANYC - How wonderful! I would love to do a race overseas or on one of the many Islands.....IF I had been a runner when I still traveled a lot for work I would have been on the look out for races to do!

Rhondalyn - I guess I am a travelling (or destination) racer. I travel a fair bit for work and fun. I've mostly been thinking about races in US and Canada, but actually, I should look out for races in the places I travel for work. (My husband did his first marathon in Egypt - to and from the pyramids - when he was stationed there with the air force.) It would be really cool if I could run a race in London, Argentina, Rio or Mexico (that's where I often travel for work ...)

4-14-12: Summerlin HM
6-23-12: Running w/ the Devil HM

Those 5 are all going to be local here in Las Vegas. I can not do any past June (marathon training) so unless I find ones for Feb, May, or others for same months (HM's) that is all I will be sadly doing.

So far, I just have Houston HM in January. I might be doing Hogeye in Arkansas in April with my sister-in-law, but that's kind of if-fy right now. I just need to get through my next 2 HMs right now & then decide what my plan is for the next 6 months or so.

Since we're close to the end of the year, it's time to start planning for 2012. Can we turn this thread into a sticky?

These are the races I'm considering so far:

- Myrtle Beach HM (Feb President's Day Weekend) with my husband. Unless it snows (as it did a few years ago), this should be a warm-ish midwinter break for us.

- Wenatchee WA HM (April 21) with my sister. I picked this one because I'm looking for a race to run before or after a visit to see my dad in Vancouver BC for his birthday. I considered the Whidbey Island WA HM on April 15, but the course looks tougher (and isn't closed to traffic), the risk of rain is a lot higher, and the accommodation options aren't great if you need a 2-bed room. And I hear the drive to Wenatchee is really pretty.

- Fairfield CT HM (June 24) with my husband. It's near NYC and my running colleague at work recommends it. But it might be a bit too close to our wine-drinking holiday in France scheduled for early June.

- Governor's Island 10K (late July) - because who is crazy enough to run a half marathon in NYC in the summer heat? Besides, last year's race (my first 10K) had a fabulous shirt. And Governor's Island is a hop, skip and short ferry ride from our apartment in the financial district.

- looking for a mid-late September HM near NYC

- Healdsburg CA HM (late October) with my sister. We love California wine country, we had a great time at this race earlier this fall, so we'd like to do it again.
