I was concentrating on how I run the other day and I think sometimes when I am trying to push my speed I push with my toes more? Almost like I'm clenching my feet! Ha...that sounds crazy...but I think you are right about it being a rubbing thing.
That's the website where my sister got her t-shirt...it has some great running stuff!

LOL - now I've got one too! Me, of the full size larger shoes!!!
I think I know what happened though - my feet were really swollen after my last couple of 5 milers. Must have been enough to cause the rubbing/squishing of the toe. Just my right foot second toe (so far).
Toenails are for sissies! I still love that one!

I haven't changed socks or shoes so I'm not sure. I have been wearing the same size for all the long distance training last year and never had this happen. So strange! I'll try on a pair of the bigger size shoes when I get new ones and see how they feel...
I have had this problem several times in the past. I do make sure to buy a size larger shoe than I would normally wear but I have had this happen in shoes I have been wearing for several weeks and all of a sudden there is a problem. (with no change in socks)
The last time it occurred I was working on speed and there was about a mile and a half of downhill. I think it was the downhill pushing my foot forward in the shoe along with a faster pace. I almost think the larger shoe was part of the problem because my foot had more room to slide up and jam into the top of the shoe. I don't know though- it has not occurred again for about a year (knock on wood- sandal season is just around the corner!)That longer second toe really is a pain sometimes but I've been told that it is supposed to be a sign of intelligence.
Good luck- I hope you are able to pinpoint the cause
What is that second to big toe, and in my case tallest, toe called...the ring toe?
Whatever it is called...they hurt like HECK on the tip. If I'm about to lose a toe nail I am very sad. I have been avoiding that for the past 18 months of running. My sister has a t-shirt that says, "Toe Nails are for Sissies" but I never wanted to join that club. Gross.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I ran 3 half marathons last year and never had this issue. I run 4 days a week and cross train 2 days and my mileage is actually a little less then what I was doing during the fall months when training for the half marathons. I am doing a little more speed work and tempo runs trying to increase my speed as I'm not the fastest. Maybe I run differently when I am trying to push the speed?? My long runs have only been between 6-7 miles lately...
