I live in St.Louis, but don't mind traveling up to 4-5 hours, will go farther for Memphis St.Jude though. I have family in Indianapolis(MCCordsville) so we are combining the trip running and visiting and won't have to pay for a hotel. Wish I had a formal training program an someone to run with. I will look and see if our Y does we are members.

Hey Leslie - I just wanted to send you some love. I know your race wasn't all you hoped but you did great and you finished. I am proud of you for taking on the challenge. I have been following your journey since I am about the same age (just turned 50).
I just want you to know that you inspire me and I will be thinking of you when I am running my first half of the season this weekend. I hope to do better than my best time of 2:26. My average time is probably about 2:40 but I am hoping to set a new PR.
Your hubby is a gem to be such a solid support for you and may the person who stole your camera never be able to take a picture that is in focus!
We will run 5 miles on Tues and Thurs of this week (our normal midweek distance, and then run 8 on Sat, and just 3 miles next Tues and Thurs. I participate in a training program thru our local YMCA...you don't have to be a member to join the training. (My hubby and I belong to a different fitness center.) It is a fabulous program! 300-500 people participate every week (Tues, Thurs, Sat). It is called Team 13 --- 13 weeks to 13 miles (a 13week training program). It's for all ages, sizes, abilities....3 groups: walkers, run/walkers, runners. It is so motivating!!! There is a team of 50-60 people who organize and implement the program...everything from water stops to constant cheerleading!
I noticed that your races are in the midwest. Do you live in IN...I live in the very southern tip!

My half is Oct 11. So sorry to hear about your tummy issues....not a good feeling! I've had the same issues but never on race day. I did this same race last year and had a stomach flu...but didn't realize it until after the race. Luckily, during the race it was just alot of nausea and fever...I should have known I was ill when I was chilled thru most of the race! I kept thinking "what did i eat/not eat that is making me feel so queasy??!?". It first hit me at mile 3...not good. From there on it became a run/walk event for me. But all considered, I was happy with my time. I had hoped for 2:10 but I finished in a little over 2:40. So this year the goal is 2:10!!!

I don't know I did a 3 time a week training plan. Did a strong 10 min mile. The only thing I changed the last two 1/2 was doing the pasta meal so I'm going back to my normal eveing meal. We usual eat high protein, I'll have to just deal with that. I've never hit a wall like I did. One big problem was I had to go to the bathroom and usual can make it but had to stop and the person in front of me took over 2 min then by the time I went it was close to 4 min and my muscles were getting stiff and then running was such a struggle after that. I would run a few min and walk a few I just felt like I was not going to make it and felt like I was going to puke too. Not a good finish. My hubby said I looked good coming in though. Good luck on yours I'm just thinking about my next and what I can do to change training. My biggest run was 10 miles. Sometimes you do all the right and you just don't get the time you want!! I did hear that after your big run say mine in on Friday then on Saturday just run an easy 3-4 it helps your muscle recover if it's an easy run. When is your 1/2?

My goal for my 1/2 (in 2 weeks) is 2:10, too!!! I'm 49. I should be able to hit this number, it's what I do in training 3 times a week...a very steady 10 min miler! I've struggled with my pre-meal, too. A chicken breast and baked sweet potato seems to work well for me. Salads tend to not settle too well but that is probably just my issue! Some people swear by pasta but I've always thought it should be eaten 2 days ahead...to give your body time to break it down into "use-able" nutrients/fuel...is this correct?

Last two runs I have had pasta and my time is slowing down so I'm keeping my food at my usual dinner. I think the pasta is too heavy for me. We usually have chicken or fish for dinner with salad that is what I'm going back to.

Thanks I feel better now. I'm not hurting like I was at Nashville all the way home so that is good. Ankle is a little sore but nothing that won't be better within a few days.

Great job on finishing, even if the race didn't go as planned. Learn from it and move on to the next race!

I think you did GREAT! You inspired me with your times, so much so that running today, I actually thought of you when I crossed the finish line at my half in a time I never thought possible. Know that YOU inspired me to do well! I, too, am 47 yrs old and I'm sure training and age have something to do with it, right? Maybe just an "off" day???
I am sorry you are disappointed in your time. "Not every race can be a PR", a very wise and experienced runner has told me. Try not to beat yourself up over it. You'll do better next time.

Sorry to hear you didn't have as great of a race as you wanted, and I am especially sorry to hear that your camera was stolen. Honestly I don't know what makes people think it's a good idea to take things that don't belong to them.
I hope your next one is better.

Well it was good. But harder than I've ever run even for a half. My time was ok but I finished. Time could of been better but I felt like I hit a wall at mile 11. I always set me timer and I looked at it too much. I also felt like I was going to vomit for the last 4 miles. Any suggestions on my training for next time? My time ended up being 2:22:14 my time keeps going up is that because of my age. I'm 47. When I came in they said they were out of metal I was disappointed then found out if you wanted it engraved they had some so I did that. I didn't care for that situation. Also hubby worked his but off moving places taking pic ect. and the left the wagon door open to the Jeep and the camera was taken. I feel sorry for him so know we have to find a new camera. Everything happens for a reason. If anyone has ideas for better training for a half ect let me know. I did my biggest mile at 10 miles per hour. I was going for 2:10 but will just be happy with less than this one and hopefully get to 2:10 someday!!

Good luck, it should be beautiful out!
I don't win races, but I always cross the finish line. I'm not fast, but I try my best to become faster. I don't have sports endorsements or earn a paycheck, but that doesn't stop me from running. My pace does not define me. Just because "professional" does not precede "athlete" in describing me doesn't make my running any less valuable. I am an everyday athlete; leading a normal life, but with big goals and dreams. I am an athlete. I am a runner. (runzoerun.com)

I'm doing the Quad in Illinois this weekend. It looks like fun. You start in Moline Illinois and go over to Davenport Iowa and end back in Moline it looks nice and not too hilly,. Will be leaving to do it in a few minutes I'm not too nervous. But it always seem I start my period a day or two before the run makes for one more thing to deal with. Well I hope I beat my PR which is 2:10. Feeling good, did the training. Have a good day all and good luck to all the runners.
