I take 1200 of calcium each day, part pill form and part from foods. My dietician is helping me get more from food then pills. HOWEVER, that being said, the bones need more then calcium, there are 18 essential minerals that the bones need. So give them what they need, its not in milk, either, that's a myth.. course that is just IMO...... emoticon

speaking only for myself, I had WLS, malnutrition & malabsorbtion are a given. I did not have an issue with bone density prior to this surgery. I had no signs until 2-3 years after the procedure. I do have a family history of osteoporosis (mom & granny's). I was instructed to continue OTC calcium but also given an rx. So between surgery, history & perimenopause my bones need that jump start.

I just ran across this and thought I would like to comment, although this topic is probubly mute by now.

Osteopena is a warning sign only, it is NOT osteoporosis and therefore calcium might be enough as long as she is eating properly and exercising. EVERYONE has a diffent body type and their body type will dictate the kind of treatment they follow.

Yo Yo dieting is no good for anyone, never mind anyone with health issues.

It is up to each individual to dictate what they need to do for their body.

Here's another thought, the numbers for osteopena/osteoporosis is NOT an exact science, its a set of numbers given to a bone condition by the makers of the machine who give you fosamax and other meds, the higher the number the higher the scare tactics used. The only true test for bone health is really quite simple, the condition of your nails, colour of your hair, AND your jaw - its bone too so if its shrinking, so are your other bones.... just my 2 cents on the subject .... a bone graft is always helpful too. Your bones are made up of more then what you think, its a living part of your body, just like your heart, lungs, liver, etc, so you need to care for your bones as you would any other part of your body .... nough said, thanks, emoticon

amazing! Not surprised the Dr. isn't addressing it, I went 2 years undiagnosed finally a different Dr. saw the results & called me. Took another 2 years before someone would treat me. I hope she gets help

I emailed her and told her about the group. She honestly is very stupid. A leader she is not. I believe in honesty and I am forth right. I am so anxious to have my 65th bday. I need a good Dr right now... Not only do I have osteoporosis, I have been having problems with my Cholesterol and stopped taking those pills.. My legs were killing me. I have been a prisoner here and have not been permitted to walk cause of them or go to the gym class.

I am feeling better now. My varicose veins look like a nightmare...My nighmare.

Thanks so much emoticon

No, you're on target! She has some blinders on about proper diet anyway, but her doc isn't giving her good information either. Have you suggested that there are different views on how important osteopenia treatment is - and invite to our little group? (although you've outed yourself here pretty big time... Sometimes, ya just gotta get it out!)

THIS IS WHAT SHE WROTE:

"I had a bone density test two years ago and was told I had Osteopenia in my right hip. I was already taking Calcium so did nothing. I had another one last month and it is still Osteopenia. My doctor didn't seem too worried."

WHEN I READ THIS I NEARLY JUMPED OUT OF MY CHAIR. SHE IS IN MY WEIGHT LOSS GROUP. SO I KNOW THAT NO ONE WILL KNOW WHO SHE IS. SHE ALSO THINKS YO YO DIETING IS JUST FINE AND SHE IS A LEADER. SHE IS 65 YEARS OLD. OMG.
OUTSIDE OF THIS BEING HER BUSINESS
ARE MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS WRONG?
