I did the virtual 10K. Finish time was 69.56. When I started, I was shooting for a time between 70 and 75 minutes. When I finished, I felt like I had ran 6.2 miles!!! It was a good feeling!!!

Went to runnersworld.com. They have a section called Smart Coach which is a runners training program. You input your time on your most recent 5K, how much you currently train, Your distance goal (5K), how hard you want to train and your long day run and it will give you a program for training. Check it out if you want.

GETTINIFIT,

What program are you using for speed and tempo runs? I, too, want to work on my speed eventually. Can you let me know when you get an opportunity? I really want to work on getting a 5K completed between 30-35 minutes. Right now, I am complete in about 45 minutes. Plus, I want to get some more weight off this short body of mine! Today, I am going out for a 3 mile run. My training for the 10K actually starts today. So, if you can let me know what program you are now using, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Steph

P.S. I love being a runner! emoticon

Good job. My 5K was 42:42 so I think you did really well. It is very hard to run in the heat; I know, most of my training has been outside in 90 degree weather. When it's that hot, it's hard to keep running. You did fantastic! Be proud, running 34 minutes is a great accomplishment. How's it feel to be a runner?

Ran a 5 K Saturday. My time was down, did it in 34.03. It was very hot, so I know that was part of it. Needed to slow down several times to cool down a bit. Way to go Steph and and gettinifit. You will achieve your goals!!

Good luck Steph. I finished a 4 mile run yesterday. Will do a 5 mile next Saturday. Am training to increase my time on the 5K, but this includes running up to 10 miles at the end of the program.Program includes speed runs & tempo runs. Who knew starting this that we would be looking at continuing to run further & further. We are awesome women on a mission!

Good job Steph! 3.9 miles is nothing to sneeze at. Try driving it sometime and see how far it is. I'm hoping to run 4 miles tomorrow. Been working on a new training program from Runners World based on my time for my first 5K. Saturday is my long run day. Have a great weekend everyone!

I'm still here. I ran for 36 mins today and did the 5 min warm up walk and cool down for a total workout time of 46 mins.
I really love the c25K program, it sure did work for me. I haven't tried to increase my time from about 35ish mins, but I am running faster/further now because I've had to add extra routes to get my time in.

Your time will improve. When I started running last summer, I could not even make it 1 mile. I worked at running some and walking some for several months. When we started the C25K, I really focused on endurance. I can usually make it for a mile or better, before I have to slow down for about a minute or so. Then I am able to speed back up for about another mile. After a short break, I can finish up. It has been a long time coming. You to will make it!!

Good job! I have been continuing my running weekly, going three days a week. Doing the 3.1 miles, sometimes walking, sprinting, running, other times running. Still working on endurance (3.1 miles is still a long way to run). Time is about 42 minutes...I'm very slow, but I know that with time and patience my times will get better. Have a great day everyone.

I ran the virtual 5K last week at camp. My time was 32:07. Best time yet. I have been going a little easy. Had trouble with my knee after riding 50 miles in tour-de-kota. I'm on the mend now. I did 2 miles on Friday.

Kind of doing my own thing now. Still working on the 3.1 miles in 30 minutes, haven't made that time yet. Today, did 3.1 miles, some running, some walking, and some sprinting. Would be interested in continuing. By the way, my daughter & her boyfriend are starting the C25K program.

GETTINIFIT,

Great job! This is one of the reasons why you were one of the June's breakthrough Women on a Mission. Way to go! Again, congratulations on your 5K.

Tonight, I ran for 40 minutes in the park. Those hills get me every time. In 2 weeks, I want to increase my runs by 10%, which means 44 minutes. That will be one of my 100-day challenges.

Ladies, continue to let us know how you're doing on the C25K challenge. Has anyone ran for more than 3 days yet? I am thinking about 4 days, but I want to make sure my knees get some serious rest. Plus, I need some new running shoes.

Way to go nan8099. My hubby runs with me (or should I say ahead of me). I DID IT. Ran my first official 5K today, the River Run 07. Started & finished in last place, but my time was 42:50. Wow, faster than my practice run. I now have one 5K under my belt, more to come. What a wonderful program Couch-to-5K is. I would have never tried this without the encouragement of everyone here. Thanks so much. You can do this!

I went out and ran again today...and took a stopwatch with me this time so that it didn't take 40 minutes instead of 20. I didn't think I was going to make it after I was halfway through, but I made it with some encouragement from my husband. He went running with me and would run ahead then walk back and meet me when the walking part started each time.

Okay...I just went out and did it instead of dwelling on the being alone part. Now that I've done it I think the being alone part is better than running with someone because I can set my own pace. I did the first 20 minute run in 40 minutes though.

Hi...I'm new to the group but I've been interested in the Couch to 5k running program for awhile. I'm just too chicken to do it by myself. I think I really need someone to do it with and I'm also afraid of failure because I've never been a runner and always ended up having to walk more than run. My dad is a former marathoner and is trying to get back into it again, and he tells me just to go out and run for as long as I can but that's easy to say when you've done it for a long time. Any suggestions to get over the fear of doing the runs on my own?

Way to go PTCRUZIN52. I ran outside yesterday, couldn't do 3.1 miles running so did it walking & running (it was so hot). Today took it easy and ran .5 miles and walked then. Tomorrow will try 3.1 again getting ready for Saturday. I too am working on my speed but need to get my endurance up first. Have a great day everyone.

Did 3.1 miles on my treadmill today. Took me 50 minutes to do it. Now I know I can run the miles and time physically. They say running is 90% mental and 10% physical. Time to train my mind also!

I remember what it was like to have little ones at home. Enjoy your time with them, they grow up too fast. Did another 30 minute run today, 2.2 miles. I think it is getting a little easier, however my body still protests for a while at first. Will be running my first 5K on Saturday. Wish me luck. I know I won't be in the top group, probably trailing the end, but even if I have to walk the end, I will complete this run.

My two are a year apart- I know exactly what you are experiencing- it wasn't until a week or so ago that they were able to come with me with their bikes- If I didn't get my run in before the house woke up they would have to hang out in a field when I ran large circles around them- or I would have to run in the driveway- back and forth. lol it definitely is a challenge! But also incentive for me to get out of bed early. Unfortunately, it still holds too because there is no place they can ride their bikes near the house ( except the driveway) so we bring them when we already have an appointment in town. A couple of years back they were both in the stage of not wanting into the jogger and frankly they were too heavy together- I always wished for another mom who would meet at a park and watch the kids- she would go for a run for about an hour, then I would. . .the kids would have great time and so would I-It seemed so perfect, but unfortunately she remained a fantasy.lol :) Maybe if she had materialized I wouldn't be here on sp!

yeah, she turned 2 back in Feb and it's getting really difficult to bring her along...but if I don't then I don't get the run in, ya know? The only times I get a break from running with her is on the weekends when my dh can watch her while I run.

tough run for me today for some reason, 31 mins. And my dd wasn't cooperating in the jogger (I usually run pushing her) so after I hit that 31 min mark, I started my cool down walk.

Ladies,

Let's continue to strive! Can any of you believe that almost 10 weeks ago, we thought 30 minutes would be tough? Now, look at us! We are talking about increasing our times. We all should be quite proud of our accomplishment of 30-minute runs!

Ladies who are still doing the C25K challenge, see what you have to look forward to! Keep up the great work!

I will also be focusing on time for now. I need to know that I can run 30 minutes comfortably, then will work on increasing the time. Then speed. I don't want injuries.

SEASMOKE,

I have tried the zigzag method for calories and it worked for me. I did it in March and lost 6 pounds. I have been struggling for the last few months, because of my schedule. However, I really want to get back into doing that, because I was successful with it.

PTCRUIZIN52,

I think I am going to focus on my minutes rather than mileage right now, because I am not sure how far I have been running. Today, I ran for about 40 minutes. I am very tired and my knees are feeling that run. I really pushed myself to increase my time. Despite my knees hurting right now, the run felt great. So, I am going to make a goal to run 120 minutes this week and try to increase it each week or every 2 weeks. I am determine to reach my goal of running 9 miles again!

I know this is off topic. . but has anyone tried calorie cycling ( sometimes called zig zagging or flexing)? I was wondering as I have still not lost weight if this technique might help.

Finally Week9Day3 done! Yea! I will be continuing to run for the 30 minutes for the next two weeks, working on trying to increase my miles. I usually turn around at the half way point and see if I can make it back to the starting point, or further. (So far no go, I am only going around 2 miles per run). But I will get better and so will all of you. May sign up for the 5K run on the 30th of this month. I know 3.1 miles is further than I can run right now, but at least I will be able to set a personal record (pr) something to strive for on the next 5K. emoticon

Oh, I start counting my miles when I start running, not for the warm up or cool down walk.

Most of my running is on trail or field. . not certain how to measure distance there- I might be able to get a read from my pedometer at the walk and then go from there. . .let me fiddle around with it. I know that when I run with it the reading is very inaccurate.

I'm not sure how everyone is doing this. I have been counting how far just during the run. Are we to count what we doing during the warm up part? I am not a fast runner either, so would like to know this before I set a goal for the week.

For those ladies who completed the C25K, are you up to setting a weekly mileage goal? If you are interested, please post your mileage goal for this week. I am wanting to set a goal of 10 miles for this week. While doing the C25K, within my 30 minutes, I have been only running about 2.5 miles. I do not run fast. Okay, whose with me?

For those ladies who still doing the C25K challenge, keep up the great work! Soon you will be setting mileage goals as well.

Hi everyone. Congrats PTCRUIZIN. I was not able to complete the 30 minute run, the track was very small on the ship and all the turns made my hip hurt. I did complete two 30 minute runs on the treadmill during the week. Now that we are home, I tried the 30 minute run today for day three but could not make it. Will keep going. Today my muscles were very sore and my legs refused to cooperate. Guess I needed a day of rest. We walked up and down stairs alot during the week as well as the treadmill runs. You all sound like you are doing so well. Our town has a 5K coming up the end of the month. I've got to be able to finish the 30 minute run without the treadmill!

Once the C25K is over with, I am making a goal to increase my mileage weekly. For example, next week, I am going to strive to get 10 miles. Then increase from there. I think everyone should set a goal for themselves after they have completed the C25K. What you think?

Steviebee- you have a great point. It was just a few short weeks ago that we were all worried about the five minute run! Then came the dreaded 10 and 20 minute runs. . now 30 and soon we will be passing that by! Everyone has done so well!

Since your goal is to increase significantly, have you seen the program for after the couch 2 5k? I haven't looked recently. . but I remember a program that brought you to the 1 hour( or maybe beyond) mark slowly.

Ran for 33 minutes today! I ran at our metropark today and that trail had a few hills I thought were going to kill me. However, I did push myself on my last lap! Whew! emoticon

I cannot wait until I get back up to my 9 miles.

Hi everyone. Did W8D3 on Saturday. Ran in Tx, it was hot and hilly where we ran. Boy I was so tired, just wanted to quit but I didn't. Yea. Also ran this morning (Mon) in Galveston along the beach. Again very hot and tired, we did week 5 Day 1 today (I needed to do cardio, the gym wasn't open yet, so we decided to run). Tomorrow will start week 9 day one on the ship. Wish me luck. Everyone, you are all doing so well. I read about the aches & pains, me too. It usually takes me a few minutes of running to loosen up, my hip does complain some on the walking cool down.

W9D1 done. I got overheated, so had to slow down a little after 2 miles. After a few minutes going about 4.5 miles, I was able to complete the next mile and went a little further. I repositioned the fan, what a difference that made. I really struggled the last half of my second mile, so glad that I took the time to fix the fan and cool down a bit. Looking forward to day 2. Have a good week everyone!!!

WK5 D3 . . . did Day2

Was in CT and didn't realize the HILLS! My thighs are KILLING me! I ran this morning planning to do day 3 but hit the first hill and thought "oh HELL no" it was a good call - there were 3 hills all UP and they all ended up on a run.

If I can walk tomorrow I may do the real day 3. i'm anxious to give it a try.

I also just got new sneaks. My hips don;t bother me but I've started getting heel pain emoticon

Not stopping . . . I can do this . . . I will finish

yep, after. I have no clue why but I cannot run on the nights I have my bellydance class or it hurts to do some of those movements (using my hips alot). I asked my instructor and she said to stop running, that it would ruin my knees and joints. Alot of help she was.

Do yours hurt when you run or after? Mine have started hurting afterwards. It is strange- it has never been a problem before- and I don't notice it while I run. I wonder what is different.

Seasmoke,
I have the same problem. My hips bother me. Not sure what to do about it.

Anyone out there know why I get sore hip bones when I run? Does anyone have any stretches or exercises which would strengthen that area?

Good Day Runners!

Here's week #9 schedule. Finally, we are at 30 minutes of running without walking within your 30 minutes. So, here's the schedule:

Day #1:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog 3 miles (or 30 minutes). Don't forget to cooldown as well.

Day #2:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog 3 miles (or 30 minutes). Don't forget to cooldown as well.

Day #3:
The final workout! Congratulations! Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog 3 miles (or 30 minutes). Don't forget to cooldown as well.

Ladies, I know some of us are on different weeks and that's quite okay. We are still going to use this thread to continue to report our progress. Please feel free to let us know what has been working for you and what has not. Remember, we are here to motivate and support one another.

Sincerely,

Steph

Week 8 day 3 done. It was another tough run in this humidity. UGH. And my ipod battery was dead when I got to the park, so I ran sans music.
Taking the weekend off, my right hip is killing me. Not really looking forward to the 30 min runs next week.

WK 5 Day 2

Done. I was holding on to the treadmill for dear life for the last minute - but I did it.

Still nervous about day 3 - but I know I can do it!

PTCRUIZIN52,

That's funny! I do the same thing. I psyche myself into running for a longer period of time, by telling myself just 5 more minutes. I actually ran 30 minutes today!

Week 8 Day 2 done. First early in the am run. 28 minutes and today I actually ran 2 miles. (I know I'm slow, I'm working on it). Leaving tomorrow. Will let you know how I'm doing when I get back from vacation. Everyone stay strong, this is a terrific thread and a terrific program.

Notsolittledeb don't let the 20 minutes scare you. Tackle it in smaller segments. Start with going for 5 minutes. Tell yourself that you can make it for 5 more minutes. At that time you will be half way. Now tell yourself that you have already gone 10 minutes, so you can make it five more and then you will only have 5 left. After 15, 5 will seem like a piece of cake!! You can do it!!

notsolittledeb. Don't let the 20 minute run scare you. This programs trains you well for that run, your muscles are strong, you need to be strong mentally. You can do it! I'm working on 28 minutes now, thought I would die just a few weeks ago on one minute. You will do fine.

Have a great time, gettinfit! I ran twice on my vacation while camping over the long weekend, and it was GREAT! A nice change of scenery, and I didn't feel so bad indulging in those smores around the campfire! ;)

I am going to attempt day 2 week 8 today at the park...it's a little cooler today and I'm hoping that the change of scenery is what I need.
