Wendy's Ultimate chicken grill has 370 calories and that is without cheese and mayonnaise. The dinner issue is a problem for all of us working girls. If you have a crock-pot you can find some terrific healthy easy recipes. Here are a couple of recipe I love and they are so delicious. The chicken tacos I actually learned from a spark member. They're a numerous different ways to use these but here are the methods I like best:

Boneless, skinless chicken breast (I use three breast and it makes quite a bit)
Chicken broth
Taco seasoning packet
Shredded lettuce
Salsa
Chopped olives
Light cheese
Whole-wheat wraps or crunchy taco shells

Put chicken in the crock-pot and cover with chicken broth. Add about a half of the taco seasoning into pot. Cover and cook for 6-8 hours on low. When you get home take chicken and shred (it shreds very easily no knife needed). This is great on salads as well and also for a nice lunch.

Here is one of my staples and my family loves it and I am the only one on a diet:

Chicken or fish packets:

Aluminum foil
Boneless, skinless chicken breast or fish
Fresh sliced or chopped vegetables (I use green beans, asparagus or any squash and potatoes)
Laughing cow lite cheese triangle (optional)
Seasoning or marinate of your choice

Cut a large rectangle of foil and place one boneless, skinless chicken breast or fish in center. Season if you have not already marinated. Place vegetables on top salt lightly and pepper. Place cheese on top and wrap foil over top and crimp in sides so that the steam does not escape. Chicken cook at 400 for 45 minutes, fish cook at 350 for 30 minute.

I can’t describe how really good this is; you have to try it to believe. The steam incorporates all of the flavors and spices or marinate. Plus each person has a packet with no other side needed if you add the potatoes. Not only is it fast but also has minimal clean up.

Fast food is not really a weakness but more of a necessity! I know that sounds really weird, ut my schedule is so hectic I barely have time to eat... much less cook!

I have been making healthier choices when I order my food (i.e. Wendy's Ultimate Chicken Grill) and I have pretty much done away with the fries. emoticon

If anyone has some great suggestions for FAST and EASY recipes, I would love to hear them!

Good point, PSYCHOGREENGIRL, about our minds being in sync with those signals, I think those are the kinds of triggers we need sometimes to remind us of what our goals are.

that sort of thing happens with fast food (which i almost never get, and certainly no more than once a month if even that often), but i've also had this problem with red meat.

my dad doesn't cook very often, and if he does its with our meats or hamburger meat, not terribly often either. the closest thing to meat i eat the most is beans. meat around here consists of lunchmeat, hot dogs (which i stopped eating years ago), and canned tuna. when dad gets a pound of hamburger meat and makes spaghetti or cheeseburger pie with it, my stomach rebels badly (especially with the spaghetti--he never drains the meat before putting it in the sauce). i end up praying to the porcelain god or camping out with my newest book til i feel i can stand again.

its nice to know that our bodies can say "hell no" on certain things when they're not any good for us. it's even better when our minds are in sync with those signals and bodily memories. then its like anything is possible. but my memory isn't the best, and i forget the lesson til the meals over, right before the pain begins. grr...

I'm a nerd out of habit, not out of spite.

SAVED1 and NICOLE38 - I'm learning from your posts. I had heard that the rejection of fast foods could happen once you have been away from them for a while, and apparently its true. WOW!

NICOLE38,
I CAN TOTALLY RELATE. AFTER BEING OFF OF FAST FOOD FOR AWHILE, YOUR BODY WILL DEFINITELY REJECT IT. I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE. I WAS REALLY CRAVING A CHICKEN CHEESESTEAK SUB A FEW MONTHS AGO AND DECIDED TO INDULGE. BAD MISTAKE!! NO MORE THAN 30 MINUTES AFTER EATING IT, I WAS REALLY IN PAIN.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS CURED!
WHEN AND IF I HAVE FAST FOOD, A KIDS MEAL OR SALAD IS ALL I CAN HANDLE.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.

I was so in LUV with McDonald's Quarter Pounders and their Double Cheesburgers. They were my all time favorites- and CHEAP. I stopped eating that stuff as well as other fast foods over 2 1/2 years ago. My husband brought home a fast food burger a few weeks ago. He only ate half of it and I said I'd eat the other half so that it wouldn't go to waste. Big mistake. I had the worse stomache ache that night. My body really rejected it. That experience basically put the seal on the promise that I'll never return to fast food again.

RUMPLETEAZER:

I used to be a fast food junkie but started modifying myself a little at a time. Instead of the large sandwich I would order a kid size and same for the fries, kind of like how you stop smoking. It really works because your taste for those things diminishes overtime. Also, don't kick yourself too hard it's only one meal as long as you continue the day making healthy choices and if you don’t then on to the next day. Guilt is an enemy it only causes you to over eat for consoling efforts.

We live each day with the thought of a better tomorrow so lets make all of our tomorrows healthier and fulfilling.

Good idea, RUMPLETEAZER! I had a cup of coffee from McDonald's back in January and was surprised at how good it was - it had been a long time since I'd had their coffee and I wasn't near a Starbuck's at the time (lol). If you think it will be tougher to re-train your brain to make healthier choices, I'd say stay away and only do it was a treat for yourself once in a while. Hang in there - you can do it!

Thanks Steph & VELVETCATT.

I think you've hit it right on -- we usually don't WANT the healthier choices. At least that's my case, anyhow.

For me, I think it will work best if I can just try to avoid them altogether. I'll get my coffee there, but nothing else. If I'm in a super big rush and have to have something there, then I will have to re-train my brain to go for the lighter choices.

There are some good, healthy choices offered at fast food restaurants. The problem is we usually don't want them (lol) because of our conditioned way of thinking. If it's really difficult to break the habit of eating fast food, I would strongly encourage you as the others here are doing, to make better, healthier choices. Good luck and remember - YOU CAN DO IT!

RUMPLETEAZER,

I completely understand what you are talking about. What I do, when I am short on time and have to stop somewhere, I try to look for healthy alternatives. For example, McDonald salads are healthy and low in calories. I try to stay away from anything fried. Or if you know you going to be busy and have to stop, once you see what your calorie intake was, then have other lower calorie meals. For example, you had 800 calories for breakfast, then have a 250 calories lunch (McDonald's Ceasar Salad is 220 calories and filling), a 300 calorie dinner and two 100 calorie snacks. That will still be 1550 calorie day. Then your workout will additional compensate for the calories as well. So, maybe park your car away from the entrance to your office. Again, take the stairs, instead of the elevator. Do your normal workout, but take it up a notch. Add an incline or hills to your walk or run. Just try to balance everything out and do not feel guilty. We all have missed the mark on our weight loss journey! But, we continue to dust ourselves off and try again. So, don't be too hard on yourself. Just make adjustments!

I hope this helps!

Steph

Oh my goodness it is so hard to say no to that stuff!

Thanks for all your great suggestions here...I think for me I just have to remind myself how much extra BAD stuff there is in the kind of fast food that I want. It's just not worth it for the 2 minutes of feel-good satisfaction, I think.

I still have fast food. I check the website of the place and choose what I'm going to eat before hand. no matter what - it's not the healthiest choce - but if you can get it to work inside your calorie range and you don't do it everyday I say whats the harm.

I will tell you I once ordered a "snack" chicken wrap - thinking it would be a good choice - turned out to be a really bad choice! it was that darn mayo dressing stuff I bet!

With burgers hold the mayo and hold the bacon does wonders. Even better is a burger on top of a side salad - minus the bun and the mayo. Pass on the fries - but if you don't think kid size - not super size. No drinks - stick with water

Breakfast - stay away from fried anything

I have found if I deprive myself of anything it makes me miserable and makes me want more.

The salads are a good choice too - but just look up the calories and fat counts. That's true for all restaurants as many try to pass off foods as healthy selections when in reality the way they are prepared and the amount served to you makes them unhealthy.

I use to be a fast food junkie myself and haven't eaten any in over 1.5 years now other than the occasional salad when we're on the road to a vacation spot. It was hard at first, always being tempted do just go and eat it one last time before giving it up for good. But what worked for me was watching a show one time where the topic was how fast food is made and cooked and it grossed me out so much that when I get tempted to go to the drive-thru, I think of that show and it stops me everytime. It's been so long now that I don't even miss fast food anymore. I can't remember the show, I believe it was segment on 60 minutes or one of those documentary shows but you can always go online and do a little research. There's enough info out there in cyberspace to sqeeze anyone out of eating disgusting, artery clogging, heart attack increasing, weight gaining fast food.

Sometimes you have to modify how you eat fast food. For instance, when I'm in a rush in the am, I'll get a egg mcmuffin but then only eat the sausage and the egg, not the muffin (you have to hold it with a napkin cause it's greasy). Same thing with a McChicken sandwich. Modifying what you eat from fast food place will help cut it down some.

Just don't beat yourself up. Take an extra walk and do better with everything else you eat today. Also if you can go on line and get the calories for Tim Hortons menu, then you can plan what you eat and not have to cut it completely out.

Good luck!

I don't eat out much. I usually cook my own food. That way I know exactly what goes in it. Chips, and the occassional cookie is my down fall. But the best way for me to stay in control is to avoid eating them. When I start eating them it is hard to stop. So Try my best to avoid them. I do slip every now and then but if I do I try and get some extra activity in. Try and plan your menu for the day or week and stick within. If you eat extra workout extra.

I had a downfall this morning at Tim Horton's for breakfast which put me at almost 800 calories before 8:30am! emoticon I'm feeling terribly guilty now.

How do you resist the temptation of fast food when it's so convenient and tastes so good? I know how unhealthy it is, but sometimes I just can't stop myself. emoticon
