Your story made me smile, NOTSOLITTLEDEB - but thanks for letting me know that I should definitely steer clear of the scale in the wee hours of the morning! emoticon

Who knew - at 2am you weigh more then at 7am LMAO

I need to cut free of the scale!

I;m doing better - the last time I tried to lose weight I got on and off several times a day! at least I'm down to once a day.

that it is. emoticon

just out of curiosity, what is it about the scale that makes some of us here so anxious? i know i get a bit irritated when the results aren't what i thought they'd be, but as long as i know that i haven't stopped doing good things for myself, they don't bother me as much if at all.

anybody else feel like that, or is there another way to cope going around? some of us just seem anxious, and i'm curious what else could help.

well, it can be for me if i tried to weigh myself every day.

i have a weigh in day with my best friend on friday mornings. that's my official weigh in day. i'll also weigh on mondays these past few weeks, though. sometimes i've had bad weekends and that number helps remind me that i need to keep the weekends going strong like the rest of the week. i have a lousy memory, which is why i do that.

true, the numbers can be frustrating when they dont' budge or go the wrong direction, but if i look at it straight from a positive light, its not so bad to me. i'm also just coming off plateau, so checking my weight 1-2 times a week helped me to notice this sort of thing.

The SPARK article was good in offering other alternatives. I just dont see the point in weighing every week when I know its going to upset me so I do monthly or every other month, and in the meantime I pay attention to the fit of my clothes.

Ladies,

I stopped weighing myself on a weekly basis, because it was causing way too much frustration. So, I went back to weighing myself on a monthly basis as well as taking my measurements. Like one of the other WOAMs, I seem to be losing inches faster than pounds, which right now is fine.

My kickboxing instructor which so happens to be a RN told me to throw the scale away and go by how your clothes fit...2 weeks ago I tried on some pants I hadn't worn in along time I could button them but they were still alittle snug...This week I put them on and wore them to Church...The scale said I didn't lose anything but my clothes fit better....

May your days be blessed....

Good morning ladies! There is a great BestofSparkPeople Daily article today on this very topic. It talks about measuring progress in other ways besides the scale. Check it out!

LMSIM02 - I think I'll take the inches because I do seem to be losing those faster than pounds.

Yeah weight is JUUUST a number and we all need to keep telling ourselves that. Take your measurements weekly too! You may not go down on the scale but you might be surprised to see those inches disappear! Besides, what is more important: looking and feeling good in clothes or being a certain number a scale tells you?

Equation for success:

Goal = (Where you want to be - Where you are today) / Time + Effort that you are willing to invest.

I think, too, that we should look at alternative ways to measure our successes, rather than focusing so much on what the scale says. Remember, as you exercise and start to tone up, you gain muscle which (unfortunately) weighs more than fat. If your clothes fit and feel better, that is certainly a way to measure success. If you take your measurements and notice that the inches are decreasing, that's certainly a measure of success. Hang in there, Ladies - we're on this journey together and I say celebrate every success we have along the way without letting the scale "weigh us down". Have a blessed day!

I am right there with you MGIRL! I really think I am going to throw my scale out! I try focusing on other things too that really reflect my success such as drinking 8-12 glasses of water a day, being able to do my entire workout video without stopping to rest, eating under my maximum calorie allowance, etc.

The scale is not a good measurement of success, at least not on a daily basis. I may switch to bi-weekly or monthly too.

Also, I find that keeping a record of my measurements can show me progress when the scale doesn't. Remember the goal is to get healthy as well and the little things that Deb talked about are great measures of progress...my favorite one is how many times I can do high knee lifts in my tae-bo class.

I try to focus on little things, like being able to cross my legs and not getting out of breath doing the laundry.

That said - I get on that stupid scale every day. I tried pakcing it away last Monday morning . . . but hubby must have decided to weigh himself! When I got up this morning it was sitting in the middle of the bathroom floor again! UGH! Naturally I got on.

Not getting on the scale for a week would be a great challenge - and a very difficult one! Anyone interested? Lets see if we can go a week?!

I try not to let the scale dictate how I feel about myself. It doesn't reflect who I am inside or outside as a person. I don't concentrate on the scale. I weigh every other week. If I see that that I've gained I try and refocus on my goals.

There is no way I would go near a scale on a weekly basis - my reaction would probably be the same as BABYLON17's! (lol) I usually weigh monthly but if I forget one month I just do it the following month. Hang in there ladies!

I knew this would happen. I weigh myself way too much. I was just thinking, what do the freaking numbers mean anyway? It's just a number. I guess it's more about how I feel about myself and my body. Im pretty close to tossing the scale out. Anyone feel the same way?
