Your story is very inspiring. I was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago and I had a bad doctor too. I have been so depressed because he wasn't giving me the help I needed. I am currently looking for another neurologist. I live in Amarillo, Texas. If anyone knows of a good neurologist in my area that actually listens to his patients; PLEASE let me know.

Hang in there! Take it one day at a time. I too have had MS for many years, but was not diagnosed until 3 years ago. I am new to Sparks People and am already very encouraged.

Hi All

I am very happy to be on Spark people to be able to share wwith other people that have MS. I decided to be more active on this. I was diagnosed with MS over 15 years. I feel like I cant even do one tenth of what I used to. I take Provigil for the fatigue. I take Rebif for the MS. Recently had an episode which caused me to lose my eyesight. The doctor is changing me to Tsyabri. My eyesight is coming ack slowly. My job is very mentally demanding. My oldest son has ulcertive colitis and he has been dealing with that and getting that under control. I was worried about him and internalize the stress which trigged the episode. I need to get this weight off because it affects my walking and for my overall well being.

Hello Everyone!
I am very happy to be on Spark people to be able to share wwith other people that have MS...I was diagnosed with MS last year. I feel like I cant even do one tenth of what I used to. This fatigue is not helping with the weight gain. My job is very physically demanding and stressful, and by the time I get home on some night I end up fallin asleep on the couch. Any suggestions or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated...I feel tired of treading water alone...i am ready for some helping hands

I was just diagnosed with MS in July but my neurologist thinks I have had it for about 30 years. I have had many tests done because of numbness, fatigue, etc. but the doctors could never determine what was wrong and never suspected MS. It was only found by accident when I was having an MRI of my spine for degenerative disks - the radiologist saw something and requested I come back for an MRI of my brain. At least I know it wasn't just my imagination - I had gotten to where I hated to even mention my problems.

My neurologists says that it is good that I am no worse than I am for having it so long and not being diagnosed - but I have noticed in the last year that things have gotten worse.

I started limping about 7 or 8 months ago and my cognitive functions started deteriorating. I sometimes say or type the wrong word and sometimes have to really think to come up with the word I want to say. I have to really go over everything I type to make sure I haven't used the wrong words.

The fatigue has gotten really bad the last 3 years (having to work 4 10-hour days doesn't help either) but is getting somewhat better since I have gotten my Vitamin D levels built up from 7 to 37. I tried Provigil for the fatigue but couldn't sleep and had to quit taking it.

I had lost about 35 pounds in 2007, but when the fatigue got so bad it was all I could do to make it through the day at work and stop somewhere to eat - let alone think about trying to exercise. So in the last 3 years I have gained that 35 pounds back plus 15 more.

Hopefully with Sparkpeople I can get back on track and make some progress towards my weight loss.

Fatigue and cognitive issues caused me to stop working about 9 years ago. My neurologist had encouraged me to stop for two years and I finally gave in. Now I have energy for my husband and kids and grandkids, for friends, and for some volunteer projects. I was surprised what a great transition all this would be. Pain, fatigue, cognitive struggles continue to plague me, but I'm so much better able to cope by being able to vary my schedule to fit my energy and ability that day. SP has been such a great support to me in so many ways. Thanks friends.

MY NAME IS TIFFANEY I AM 26 YEARS OLD AND I HAD OPTIC NEURITUS THIS AUGUST. I HAD AN MRI DONE AND WENT TO GO SEE A NEUROLOGIST THIS SEPTEMBER AND AFTER LOOKING AT MY MRI HE SAW LEISONS AND OTHER EPISODES OF OPTIC NEURIOUS THAT OCCURED. HE HAD ME DO MRI ON MY BACK AND NECK AND THEY CAME BACK NORMAL..THANK YOU JESUS FOR THAT! HOWEVER HE TOLD ME THAT THE OPTIC NEURITUS WAS THE FIRST EPISODE OF MS. HE COULD NOT DIANOSE ME WITH MS BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE ANY OTHER SYMPTOMS OR EPISODES BUT HE WANTS ME TO TAKE AVONEX. I CRIED WHEN HE TOLD ME THIS. NOW I AM TRYING TO STAY POSITIVE AND I TALK TO A GOOD FRIEND WHO IS MY COWORKER WHO HAS MS AND SHE TRIES TO GIVE ME ADVICE AND SHE IS SOOO POSITIVE THAT SHE KEEPS ME BEING POSITIVE ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT SHE FEELS BETTER NOW THAT SHE WORKS OUT AND SHE EATS BETTER. SO I AM PLANNING TO DO THE SAME THING. I STARTED BACK AT THE GYM YESTERDAY AND ALTHOUGH THE RIGHT PART IS A LIL BUMPY I WILL GET THERE. I HAVE READ SOME OF YOUR STORIES AND I HAVE TO SAY YOU GUYS ARE MY HEREOS AND COULD BE MY FUTURE MENTOR OR FRIEND OR BOTH. THANK YOU ALL FOR POSTING YOUR STORIES. I FEEL LIKE I'M NOT ALONE IN THE WORLD WITH SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS I DO HAVE. I ALSO GET VERY TIRED SOMETIMES I COME HOME AFTER WORK AND HAVE NO ENERGY AND FALL ASLEEP AT LIKE 5 AND DON'T WAKE UP TIL LIKE THE NEXT MORNING TO GET UP TO GO TO WORK AGAIN. MY DOCTOR SAID IT COULD BE FROM MS ALSO. WELL I DON'T WON'T TO WRITE YOUR HEAD OFF SO I'M GOING TO STOP HERE. GOD BLESS.

Hi Tracey....Welcome! You're so lucky to have your husband and children there to give support and assistance. Diagnosed with ms back in 2000, so far only lesions showing are on my brain (other issues with my back & neck). Take each day as it comes and those of us in SP will give support, etc. as best we can. Keep up the good work getting fit. Peace

Hi! I'm Tracey and from Stockbridge, Georgia (just south of Atlanta). I live with my wonderful husband and three sweet kids that are ages 19 ,17 and 12. I had my first big episode in 1999 but wasn't diagnosed until 2003. I have relapsing/remitting and have recently had a major episode and found out on Friday (Sept 10th) that I have a new lesion on my spine (I have a few on my brain and one on my neck). This is the first new one in years so this was like being diagnosed all over again. My husband and kids help me through every day and make the pain and depression bearable. I've been exercising much more since joining SparkPeople and look forward to being very, very fit!! Thanks, Tracey

I've a feeling in my soul,
And I pray that I'm not wrong,
That the life I have now,
It is only the beginning

It feels like I'm born again
It feels like I'm living

For the very first time
In my life

I was diagnosed with MS in 2000. Believe it was beginning several years before but I didn't know nor did anyone suspect until I lost vision in one eye. Most sight in that eye did come back but not all. Have days when am very tired but I am boistered by my workouts. Have a teenager who saps a lot of my energy. Keep trying- you can overcome your plateau! Kudos to you for any activity you partake in!! emoticon

Hi, my name is Shelly and i too have MS and a wieght problem I was diagnosed 7 years ago but had a bad dr who said it was'nt bad enough to go on therapy so sent me on my way (said it was a insurance thing) anyway tried to come to grips with it all and find ways to deal with everything went on a healthy eating plan and was able to go from 290 down to 199 in a little over a year, of course I have found a good dr and have been on treatment for almost 3 years, my problem now is i have hit a platue and can not seem to break through I know that if I just or could increase my exercise it would probably help but after working 8 hours a day and commuting 40 min each way and then coming home and putting on the Mom hat i am just so tired, anyway looking forward to getting to know you all and hoping to get some great pointers from everyone I really need to get the last of this wieght off for my health and self esteem

I blew it yesterday. I overate and I didn't exercise much. Summer heat has made symptoms more challenging and a bit of depression has resulted. Today I'm so nauseated, dizzy and weak. I have a lunch date with an old friend and feel like I'll be lucky to have a glass of ice water or maybe some tea. This is not where I thought I would be by now. It is very frustrating, but i know there is still hope. Today has possibilities. I just have to reach.

WELL this is a start for something new.

I was diagnosed in 2003 for R/R MS. I know I had it 10 years before that but the neuro doc didn't see lesions on the MRI so he wouldn't do anything. I would drag my foot (and get yelled at for leaving scuff marks), my legs would go numb so had to use a cane, I would get super tired etc...and told it was all in my head.

So now I moved away from them and living in a safe community near a VA (yes Im a female vet--post Vietnam). Without the VA's support and the friends here, it would be horrific. I mostly use a walker now but there are days where I can walk straight like anyone else. Go figure!! LOL

I'm glad I found Sparks. Actually I was looking for Nutrisystem on google and found this!! This sounds much more of a friendly place (and cheaper).

Suck indeed they do, those relapses! (That's my Yoda tribute for the month.)

I'm just finishing the intravenous portion of a steroid treatment protocol and will begin a taper on oral prednisone, tomorrow.

One thing I had been quite concerned about was the possibility of weight gain, but having both the support of others and the accountability of logging my food, has allowed me to see ways to make good choices and manage the increased appetite demon that frequently accompanies steroid treatment.

YAAY SP!

Hi, I have had MS since 1986. I joined spark the end of last year and was making great progress till I had a relapse. I was on a lot of steroids, gained more weight and during this time quit smoking after 39 years and gained more on top of that. I am trying to get back on track but am finding it difficult.
Pleased to meet you all.

JAYME!!! I am sooo glad that you are here! There are over 600 people on this team and everyone is losing in one way or another. Slowly or quick! It depends on your body. I know you can loose the weight! Just learn to eat right and exercise and drink lots of water! Make sure you portion and weigh your foods or at least portion it Search for a portion chart either here or on Google. Don't eat because you need to have your tummy full Portion your food and eat it drink water and wait because it takes your stomach 20 minutes to realize that you did eat. I hope you are going to do well and actually I know you will be doing well. As always you will be in my prayers! God Bless you and can't wait to see how your weight loss goes!!

Hi. My name is Jayme, I'm 38 and I was diagnosed with MS and Chronic Fatigue in 2005. I had my first attack in 2003. I grew up with taking care of my mother, who was diagnosed in 1972.

In 2007, I left my 2nd husband and a couple of months later, I met Josh. Since I have been with Josh, I have been in remission. I have gained strength in my legs, stopped using a cane and gained feeling in my feet.

Between the stress free life with Josh, the time on my hands for being disabled, I have worked at getting healthier. I go to a chiropractor, that discovered that my C1 - C4 were out of alignment. He also found a problem in my hip area, that made my leg 1/2 inch shorter. We discovered that the muscle spasms I have in my back, pulls me out of alignment.

I take vitamins and do stretching and walking when able. I have decided that its time to get rid of the weight that has piled on. Hope people can help me here.

I was actually diagnosed after college but I have a feeling that I have had ms all my life. I always had problems with school and remembering and getting stuff done. I still do but I have come up with some things that help me out. Its just now I know why learning was so hard for me and still is. Its hard and I understand what your going through. I have 3 kids now and I am a stay at home mom. I keep the kids clean fed and busy and keep the house clean everyday. But I am feeling better now than I have in a long time. Only thing I am dealing with is my right side getting tired and aching. BUT I also found out that I can make that go away with Tylenol 3. So I'm doing good :0) Keep up with finding out how your body will work and what you need to do when You work with your body. It took me a while but I finally got it. Things like eating unhealthy, drinking, smoking and all the bad stuff I did in college and after and kept doing it after I was diagnosed and found out the hard way many years later that I had to stop all of that. Once I did I started feeling better and all my symptoms were manageable. So do your best t stay away from all of that stuff. Good Luck and hope to see you often on here.

I as dx'd in March 2009. I finally decided a could months ago that I can control certain things about my life and that my health was one of them MS is only one little part of my health...I have more trouble motivating myself to get up and go the gym. Once I am there I go to the classes. The problem is I am also in college and the stress of getting papers finished and finished well can wipe me out for a couple days. Anyone else have this problem or went through school trying to battle MS and be healthy at the same time?

Hi, I'm new to sparkpeople - not as new to MS. I had my 1st major exacerbation in 2003, received the diagnosis in 2004. I'm thankful for it. God allowed me to be broken physically, so that I could slow down and take the time to be healed spiritually. I praise Him for that! I don't know that I would have ever done it otherwise. And He has blessed me since - I'm pretty stable from day to day - just the usual fatigue, mostly. The other weird symptoms fluctuate from moment to moment. But now I have peace - because I know that Jesus is with me through it all. emoticon

This is my third day with SparkPeople. I am starting to get the hang of it. I am eating less and eating healthier but it is the lack of exercise that gets to me. I have always had dogs to walk byut my last furry friend died last December. I now walk a friend's Scotty dog EVERY day for 30 minutes and play wirth her for 30 minutes. She is my "dog therapy". I have an art studio up a flight of stairs so that is my other exercise. Has anyone had an results from stretching exercises-the long slow ones but not intense Pilates-like?

Hi. I signed up on sparkpeople.com a couple of weeks ago, but am really just getting on board. On June 21, 2001, a date that will be forever etched in my mind, I was diagnosed with MS. Compared to others, my diagnosis was very fast; it was done within 2 weeks. Apparently I had relapsing remitting MS for about 20 years and didn't know it. There were two events in my medical history that the MDs think were MS exacerbation's, about 10 year apart. Unfortunately, when I was diagnosed it was not with relapsing remitting, but with secondary progressive MS. I have been on Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone, Rebif, 19 months on Tysabri, and am now back to Avonex. MS has mostly affected my right leg and I am unable to walk without assistance. In August, I fell and broke my ankle, had it operated on, finally got out of a cast 2 days before Thanksgiving, then wouldn't you know it, fell again on Thanksgiving, sprained the same darn ankle! I've been pretty much wheelchair bound since August, but am in physical therapy. Yesterday I was given a prescription for Ampyra, which will be out in March. The hope is that with the p/t and Ampyra, I will be able to walk again. Anyway,I apologize for being so long. I look forward to losing this weight I've put on with the support of others who may face some of the same obstacles I face.

I am new here. I lost about 30 lbs from the "cancer diet" and I feel so much better I want to keep losing more weight. So the exercise is different and the walking is pretty much my exercise. I feel pretty good-took over 20 years to get a diagnosis. I just keepwanting to put one foot in fron of the other.

Hi, I'm Kim and a newbie here. I was diagnosed in April of 2004 due to optic neuritis. I spent 4 days in the hospital doing 4 rounds of IV steroids a day and then months after taking it in pill form. They said my vision would be about 20/40...I got back to 20/20. When I was in the hospital the nurses kept coming in waiting for me to break down or freak out but I never did. My moms best friend had crippling ms and I had volunteered for the MS Society in FL for several years. I refuse to have MS control or define me...I just say it is a rollercoaster that I ride daily. Anyway, I hope to meet everyone and make some new friends on this journey.

YOur right it is harder to loose as the years go by, especially with the MonSter keeping you from doing what you want to do. I always tell people that I don't believe in DIETS and I try not to say the word. There is no point. Anyway, when you can't exercise like you want to, do your best to do something. I started my weight loss by just eating. Which means getting rid of all the bad stuff in my pantry and fridge and replacing it with good stuff. THEN I started watching my portions. Try that and when you think you want to start exercising go for a walk. I will post a portion chart again and try to send you one! Good luck! Your in my prayers !

Welcome to Doin it with Multiple Sclerosis, sorry for the new diagnosis, I know how hard it is the first few months coming to grips with it. I was diagnosed March 24, 2007 and spent quite awhile getting used to it. I have had 2 major relapses since that time and struggle with exercising. So, welcome to the team!!!!

Hey Everyone!

Im a newbie from Calgary,Canada and was just diagnosed with RRMS in March 2009. I am finally coming to grips with it and I am finally starting to forgive God for not answering my prayer of NOT letting me have MS. (my father and paternal aunt both have it). I am starting medication Rebif next and I am currenly taking an antidepressent Amitriptyline. I have 3 relapses since August 2008. My side effects are fatigue, dizzyness, numbness, tingling, pains (weird ones LOL) and digestive problems that mimic IBS (sooo not fun) and I still can be pretty active. I am wanting to lose some weight cause I know I will feel better and just looking for support, especially with people who have MS. Im going on a cruise in Jan 2010 and want to wear shorts!! hahaha
Hope to chat with u all soon!

Hello! Another newbie here. I was diagnosed with MS in 2007 and had one relapse, but have been fortunate not to have been in the hospital for MS in a year or longer now. I did fall and break my leg in Jan, and the last 2 xmases spent on crutches. It might be due to the MS - fatigue, dizziness, etc type symptoms. Not sure. But I refuse to give in. I joined a gym about 2 1/2 weeks ago and push myself to go 2 days on 1 day off. I started tracking the food & stuff a week ago. I need to feel healthier. I'm hoping some day that I will be out of plus size clothing, but at the same time, as long as I'm maintaining my current health, I'll be happy. My MS is mostly neurological and sensory issues. I forget a lot of things and have a lot of strange twinges, twitches, pains, etc. Mostly invisible stuff, but people can see on certain days I don't walk as well, or I'll seem off. I still work full time, so life gets challenging. Thanks for reading!
Karen

hi all, I'm new to this team & glad to find It. I've had rrms for 33.5 yrs. I feel very fortunate as I was diagnosed rt. away. That was in jan. 1976.I had optic neritis & was on predisone therepy.. In Dec 1993 an ent. dr. gave me my 1st mri. that said I had MS. I had been in denial for most of that time as I felt fine. Had only 3 episodes, that would last a week. I always had a positive attitude & would only give myself a day or 2 pity party. I had the numbness in my hands & feet, but I realized when I didn't think about it I didn't know I still felt that way. Mind over matter is how I dealt.1994 the lottery came up with my name & I started beta seron & amstill on . Listen to your body, when your tired rest, take a cat nap. eat your meals & keep hydrated. Balance seems to be my problem I use my walking stick to be sure I don't fall. I've had a rough yr as I thought I had some stomach problems, but much worse I would of died if i had got to the dr two hrs later. It was my kidney Was bleeding & had a kidney stone. spent 4 days in ICU & 9 more days in the hospital. thanks to wonderful Drs that insisted I come in. so as a previous person on our team had similar problem. I ended up 8 weeks later as my foot & leg was swollen, blood test showed I had a blood clot. another bump in the road of my journey. dealing with blood thinner & your diet what you can't eat much of and can't exercise. I've dealt with, can't find the clot.hopefully it has dissolved. But be hopeful & optomistic & I wish you all well. alymor

Hello DZOUCHA welcome to spark people and MS team.
I joined spark people in march (I think) and read everything I could about healthy choices & food. Once you start tracking your food it becomes easier to see whats not good. I just joined curves myself the end of July. I really like the structure and the lay out of the gym. It is only a few steps for me from a place to sit to a place to stand. I do not even take my walker in anymore. As you get time check out the articles on your start page for good sound advice and good luck on your journey. Debra

Hi Bo_Red. I also just finished a 60mg prednisone treatment. Fortunately I only gained three pounds. It is truly frusterating to work so hard to loose and then in 15 days it comes back. Hope you will feel better soon. If this is your first Pred. treatment you may notice some improvement in a day or two as your body recognizes the lessening inflamation. I hope thats what happens for you. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED what goes on will come off. good luck Debra

I've just finished taking my last 25 pills for 5 days of 50 mg prednisone today. the weight gain was rediculous. I gained back everything I lost. which puts me back to square one. I'm hoping to get back into a regular fitness routine in a day. don't want to strain my muscles before I might get better. so far the pills haven't done anything to relief my inability to do a simple task like taking out the garbage, or walking around the grocery store. it comes and goes, but never know when i might only make it half way and not be able to walk back. I can't wait to work out again. I also take Avonex once a week. havent' had a flare up in 4 years, until now.

Hi! I just joined Spark yesterday. I was diagnosed with MS in 1999. Just recently "retired" and have really put the weight on the past few months. I have joined Curves and seem to be doing pretty good getting in my physical activity, but really need as much motivation as I can receive to change my eating habits. I would love to hear from anyone on the Team!

Hi Gilli, thank you for the note. I just need to share this with everyone that has MS. If I can stop one person from having this happen to them it will be worth sharing.

Take care, Susan

Hi,
Oh my, that IS good advice. I'm afraid now that I have been DX'd with MS, that something like that could happen to me. Always before when I had complaints they always blamed it on something like my weight, arthritis and/or depression. I had to practically beg to be tested for MS! I can see a regular MD assuming that your symptoms were from MS... I'm so glad for you that you were taken care of. That's too bad, though, that now you have permanent MS damage because of this trauma.
Hang in there!

Hi everybody. I was diagnosed in 1992 at the age of 32 but when I look back I probably had vague symptoms since the age of 18. When I join any MS group I have to give this advice. Please don't do what I did and blame everything, like fatigue, on the MS. In 2003 I started to experience an increase in fatigue and muscle weakness and because MS does cause fatigue I just assumed it was a flare up. After about a month of this I woke up one morning unable to swallow and difficulty breathing. I went to the emergency room where they admitted me with the beginning of kidney failure and internal bleeding. I spent five days in ICU getting 10 blood transfusions to get my blood count high enough to do surgery to stop the bleeding. After the surgery I had to spend three months in a rehab hospital to recover. My body went through so much trauma that my MS progressed to the point of leaving me very disabled. So please, if you get sicker, let your doctor know and don't just blame it on the MS

in 97 they thought I had it but wasnt diognosed for sure till 2004 its because I tought I was just lazy because how tired I was and falling downstairs just thought I was clumsy thats why it took a bigger episoed to get me to get re checked and get diagnosed lol it takes alot to get me to go to the dr I hate them lol hate pills too so try to not take any but there are some you just cant get away from lol

That is perfectly okay hun. We all know how you feel. Its nice to be able to hear that and know that its true. I have brain damamge. I forget simple words all the time and I have to give clues to people they can tell me the word. ALL THE TIME and yes its frustrating. I was DX'd in 1999 how about you?

I'm very new to SP. Is there a way to add Wii-Fit to the "My Fitness"?

Me too!!!!! I have really embarressed myself before through posting. Sometimes I dont catch the error and call someone the wrong name or even worse asking someone how their mom was doing when she had passed away only a couple of months before. It didnt hit me until the next day! And then there's the strange words that come out of my mouth. My grandboys think its funny so we all get a big laugh. I even had to edit this post because of errors. Hey maybe we can use this to make others smile.

I get that a lot especially when I am tired. Lately though I have been typing the wrong word. I first noticed with MS that I had typos more, etc. But, lately I type along the sentence and actually type the wrong word. Not just spelled wrong or a typo but a whole wrong word. Spell check won't find them because they are correctly spelled - just the wrong word! I find them when I go back and read (which I ALWAYS have to do now). That's assuming I catch it the second time!

Y E S !!! This unfortunatley is part of my cognitive problems, a big part of why I can not work. The thing thats frustrating to me is; after I
"made up a word" the true word comes and I feel a bit dittsy. It is a more noticable issue when I am talking fast or tired. I could give so many examples but we do not have enough paper.{LOL}. Just
try to remember when that happens its not your fault, YOU are not dumb, Your brain is just mis behaving. People will call it a senior moment. accept that as their way of dealing. They do not know it happens a hundred times a day. Good Luck on your NEW Journey. ............... Debraemoticon

Just a quick question. Does anyone have the word problem...you know, when you can't get the right word to come out. Like last week my husband was blocking the clock and I needed to know what time it was. It came out "Give me the numbers(instead of time), please". So I tried again and got the same thing. This kind of thing is happening more and more. Hubby tries to fill in the blank lots of times but it is frustrating for him too.
