This depends a lot on what each plan offers. When I had to make a decision like this I sat down with a friend who used to work in insurance because it was so hard to understand the difference in plans, but she helped me break it down. We looked up my primary issues to see how they were covered. How do they let you see a doctor, do you need a primary care doc to refer you or does it allow for self referrals? Does it allow physical therapy? What's the vision plan like? Does it specifically cover diabetes or pre diabetes? does it pay for nutritionists? What if I need surgery? Does it cover chiropractic? We ended up calling each plan and discussion potential situations and how they would be covered. In the end, we decided on the plan which allowed for a combination of what you're talking about called Open EPO which allows us to self refer, covers pre diabetes and nutritionists, covers pain management techniques and PT, and covers 90% of surgeries. But everyone's needs are different.
Hope you find what works for you!
