SHOES for Zumba... I went to www.amazon.com and typed in shoe cover for Zumba. There is a sleeve that you put OVER your athletic shoe that has a felt like bottom. Its perfect to use on hardwood or if you do Zumba at home on carpet. Its actually used in bowling but I read somewhere that its great for Zumba. I bought two of them but I use one and it works perfectly! I think it was about 20.00 and that is a lot cheaper than buying new shoe. It will fit over any shoe that you already have! There is an elastic strap that holds it in place. Makes that shoe slide easily when you're doing spins, etc! You can buy them from Amazon or BOWLINGSHOE.COM! They work like a charm and you don't have to buy new shoes!
Hi AZULVIOLETA6! Thank you so much for the info on the dance classes ~ that's good to know. At this time, I do not feel comfortable with couples dancing ~ maybe in time... : )
MEANWHILE!!!! MY DVDs ARRIVED!!! Yesterday was my first Zumba session, and I had so much fun! Got in 30 minutes of the learning the steps lessons. I'll take it step by step and build up my strength and endurance slowly.
I am so thrilled to have something solid to work on over the cold and rainy months of fall and winter. I LOVE ZUMBA!! It will be fun to watch myself progress as my fitness increases.
I'm starting off with 30 minutes a day. WooHoo!! I'm on my way! Looking forward to getting to know you, Team!

You need a shoe with minimal tread and a pivot point. Three that I have liked are Bloch Apex, Ryka Transition and Nike Musique. There are several detailled shoe threads floating around--you might want to check for them in the Zumba Lovers board.
To the person with shin splints: trying warming up for 10-20 minutes and doing some stretches before Zumba. Once you've pulled those muscles though, ice and rest are pretty much the only solution.
Hi all ~ I just recently joined the group and am waiting for my Zumba DVDs to arrive [5-7 days! can't wait!] In the meantime, trying to get familiar with the forum and some of you!
I have a ballroom dance background ~ and KNOW I am going to LOVE Zumba! Haven't danced like that in years, but I think it will be like riding a bike [which I also just took back up in the Spring and am loving it!]
Look forward to getting to know you!

I used cheerleader shoes for Zumba. They don't have as much of the traction as running shoes so they allow you to slide during the dance moves, but they have enough support so that you aren't in constant pain.
First class last night. Feel very uncoordinated and hope I catch on quickly. I also have shin splints and they hurt like a son of a gun for the first 30 minutes or so. Anyone also experience this and how do you deal with it?

I started Zumba about 2 months ago at the local Y. I just purchased the Zumba fitness collection dvds. Today was Day 1. I loved doing it with the class, but I am no longer with the gym. I will have to get used to doing it by myself.
Re: your question about footwear, how old are your running shoes? I find that for me, I cannot Zumba and feel good in OLD shoes! Without adequate support and cushion in your shoes, you will definitely not enjoy yourself by the end of class!!!
I went through about 10 different pairs of shoes before I FINALLY settled on REEBOK ZIGS as my ultimate Zumba shoe! (Since I do Zumba A LOT! 7 classes per week! I need a shoe that is going to perform! These shoes are AMAZING! They have saved my knees and allow me to continue doing Zumba, which I love!!!)
I have heard that the Nike FREE are also good shoes for Zumba... they don't look lke they have enough cushion under the ball of the foot for me! (I have a tendancy to get plantar facitis, so I have to be careful about that!)
Are you still loving your Zumba???

I have just started doing Zumba DVDs at home. It is so much fun! I'm 281 lbs heavy still so I find it hard to go at full tempo, but I'm trying! I just look at it as a lot of room for improvement. I think I freaked my neighbors out the other day. I had the door open for a breeze and I don't think they've ever seen this fat girl move so fast. I secretly loved the look of astonishment. (I'm 37 and very overweight, so I think it shocks the heck out of some people when I don't dawdle through everything. (You should see the people try to pick up their pace when I'm walking into town and they start getting passed by the fat lady. Some people pay no mind, but others, you can see a distinct pep in their step as they try not to be slower than me.) LOL
I thought I would brave the class first... lol... it was a harsh decision.. and I'm glad I did it! I find it to be a MILLION times more fun in a public environment vs. by myself. It's the only way I can stay accountable. :)
HI there I'm glad you had the chance to go to the class.....I'm also happy that you found it fun and entertaining...I hope you continue to go....I'm doing it via Zumba dvds I don't have the heart to go to a class yet....

So, I've been contemplating joining a Zumba class for several months... but never tried. Until Wednesday this week. I caved and went to my first ever Zumba class at our local YMCA. I never had so much fun in all my life! I am SEVERELY uncoordinated and was laughing at myself constantly ... everyone would go left... and I'd go right... right arm up... I'm still working my feet. But... I eventually caught onto certain steps. I THINK the Wednesday night class was for beginners... or slow learners... because I attempted to go to Thursday's class too... and I was eaten alive. I screwed up so badly! Everything seemed to be much more fast paced... and I was frankly lost. I had also noticed that Wednesday night's class had roughly 50 people in it vs. Thursday's about 15. So, to me ... that was a dead give away this day was more tough. I was going to attend tonight's class... but I opted out for an evening. Instead I will hit the 9:10 class tomorrow morning.
I am however curious as to what shoes would be most comfortable? I have a pair of new balance aerobic shoes... and my feet wind up KILLING me. I can't comfortably do the moves that require you to jump around and without moving to the fullest potential... I feel as though I am not fulfilling my Zumba experience.
