My appetite is the same no matter what I do. I eat 5 times (small meals) during the day and that keeps me satisfied.

So if you are burning that many calories, what does that look like for your appetite? Because I know that any "hard" workout (way less calories burned than zumba) leaves me famished?

I burnt 858 calories tonight at Zumba. Great class. On the days I don't burn as much calories, I really feel it because we are toning more.

I'm glad to see so many report that they burn up to 1000 calories. I wear a Mio watch for tracking HR and Calories and I have thought that it must be off, because I always register between 800 and 1000 calories burned. I am an intense dancer, though.

I am new and only do the DVD;, do not have a fitbot or whatever they are called. I know if I keep up with Beto (the best instructor because he invented Zumba) I Sweat and I never sweat. I think it varies how much you weight. I am 5 feet 1 and 130 pounds and I can't see that I can burn more than 500 calories though I do intense Zumba. I love the DVD's and want to get the new ones. I am going to try my first class soon. Does anyone do only the Wii or DVD's Aloha Maya

I wear a HRM and I usually burn 480-915 calories depending on the instructors. Some are more high impact than others.

I wear a HRM all the time. I do see a difference in the Wii and Live class. I burn about 100-150 calories less on the wii. In class I average 500-650 depending on instructor. Buying a HRM is the best thing I could have done. Lately I have really been watching my HR b/c It does get high if i really get into a song. I try to keep it in my HR zone.

Do you find a big difference between your class and the Wii workout? I just started Zumba Wii this week and need to get a monitor as I have no idea how many calories I'm burning so was curious.

Hey guys - Well I tried to track my calorie burn at my Friday class like I said I would and well it didn't work out exactly as I planned. It seems that when I really sweat (alot), it won't read my heart rate so I tried to keep drying my arm to track something. Finally after 30-35 min of Zumba class, I was able to record something for the last 25 min. So for the 25min I burned 568 cal which to me only tells me that if I was able to read for the entire 60min I would easily have burned over 1,000 calories. He does a lot of jumping and moving around non-stop. It's really a great class. I just love ZUMBA....

Hmmm, I did a 45 minute work out and the according to the SP Fitness cardio tracker I only burned 263 calories! So are you all using heart rate monitors to get an accurate reading? Now this has me wondering how many other exercises am I not giving myself enough credit for...

When her routines are higher impact (lots of jumping) I burn 700-725 everytime. On her lower impact day I always burn 550-600.

I guess the calorie burn varies. I took my morning class yesterday for 1hr and I burned 901calories. That's really awesome but there has been other days were I've burned 550 it really depends what steps she does in class. I have the same instructor twice a week and my calorie burn is never the same. I also take a class with a different instructor and he is more cardio focused but I haven't used my heart monitor for his class. I'll wear it this Friday and see how much I burn. Hopefully it will be more than 901, since I'm always wiped out after his class vs. the other instructor but I love it!!!!!!!!

Ok, so I got my heart rate watch and tried it out at Zumba tonight. It says I burned over 1,000 calories in one hour. Can that be right? I know I work pretty hard, but it just seems like burning that many calories would be an impossibility!

I take Zumba on Sat and Sun. On Sat it is an 8 am class. I burn about 500-525 calories. But Sunday is an afternoon class. I burn 625-650 calories. Both classes are 1 hour with different instructors. I have only attended 4 class and I am still learning steps. So I am sure that will increase when I really get the moves down.

Got myself one of those heart monitor/calorie counting watches this weekend. I'm anxious to get to Zumba Monday night to see how many calories I'm really burning. Feels like a lot! Lost a pound last week. Which is pretty good for me because I just couldn't get that scale to move for the past month! I think it had to with Zumba!

It's a good news, bad news situation. I go to 5 classes a week. I've lost 15lbs. I always burned at least 750 a class. Now that I'm getting thinner and more fit I'm having trouble burning anything above 500. I can't put any more into it without throwing out a hip.

I'm not sure about the calories, I've never measured them, but I've been doing Zumba since the end of July 2010 and so far I've lost over 20 lbs. Sometimes I feel I haven't lost that much weight, but then I see how I can fit into clothes I hadn't been able to fit into for a long time, or I see how my more recent clothes just look bigger on me and it makes me very, very happy. I love Zumba!

I think about a month. Then, about 3 months into it I noticed my pants were all falling down. So much fun to have that be the reason to shop. I would be a "zumbaddict" even without the results.

was this with the Wii or with the DVDs?

I find the DVDs more intense than the Wii, but have only done the DVDs once, so I might have been puny that day HA! emoticon

Thank you for the heart monitor info and the working out while sick info. Yes, it is from the neck up, I think it is almost a sinus infection, had some antibiotic, so am taking that. I did zumba for 25 minutes last night, and tried not to tax myself too much, but i am not sleeping at night because I cant breathe through my nose!!

And thank you also for the zumba/curves information.

I am so glad I found more zumba lovers out here. I am 40 years old, cant dance worth a hoot, and that botty circle, well, let's just say it is pretty funny to see me do it, but at least I try HA!

I just tried my Zumba dvds for the first time today (Cardio Party 55min),(I've taken 3ish classes at Curves) and it works me out just as much as the classes do! Thursday, we did Zumba/Curves Machines for a total of 30 minutes (a full Curves circuit because we do 1m on the machines instead of 30s) and Zumba for 15, but I stayed and did Zumba straight for 30m for the second session.

I don't have a HRM to track how many calories I burn but I'd love to know - I may eventually buy one, but I've lost 105lbs by going by the machines and estimating, so I think I'm alright.

I actually just read a tip on Sparkpeople the other day for working out when you are sick. It said that if the sickness is from the neck up, like a head cold or something it is okay to work out. If it is in your chest though, you should take it easy and not strain yourself.

I got my heart monitor at Target in their fitness section. It's the New Balance one and there is a strap that goes around your chest right under the band of my sports bra and then a watch that you wear that receives and records the info from the monitor. If I wear the strap the machines at the gym pick up the info from the monitor also. It's a real motivator for me as I never trusted that was really what I myself was burning and it makes me work harder to get a higher number, lol :)

Wow, what a wealth of information everyone, thank you so much! I have caught a bad cold, and so I did not do my zumba last night, I might try a small amount tonight, depending on how I feel.

I wonder when you are sick with a cold, if exercising so hard is bad for you?? Just curious.

How do you all know how many calories you burn? I have heard of those monitors, but not sure what they are or where to get one?

Thanks all, again, you are awesome!

I'm 5'4", and started out with my weight loss at 185 pounds. I'm now at about 150 (roughly). I've found that with exception of Zumba Toning, or unless I get to class late, I always burn at least 700-750 calories during class.

My instructor told me that the body continues to burn calories at the same rate for about half an hour after exercise, so I let the counter run while I'm on my way home. Total, I usually burn at least 800 calories.

I do find, though, that the cardio calories I burn in regular Zumba are more aerobic, whereas the Zumba Toning calories, although I only burn about 600 calories a class, are more calories from fat, so either way it's a good thing.

I bought a heart monitor and wear it regularly to my zumba class. My class is an hour long and I started out at 210 lbs (I'm 5'3) and was burning about 820 calories a class. I've lost twelve pounds so I'm down to 198 and burn about 740 now. I did a longer master class that was 75 minutes and burned over 1000 calories.

It's the best way for me to burn calories because it's fun and I love going to class. I found a great instructor who does a great blend of music and I just love it.

wow, cool, thank you!!

I am just doing the DVDs right now, but I tell you my 12you daughter could stop and run a 5K right now without even trying, very athletic kid, and when we were done, she dropped to the floor and just laid there, it was hilarious! She never sweats to the Zumba Wii, but boy she was sweating to the DVDs, needless to say, I was soaked HA! So glad I found you all! We made it 35 minutes into a 55 minute session, will work towards that. Thanks for answering!

Just to give you an idea. I am 5'8" and weigh around 185. Wednesday I did 45 minute class and burned 513, on Thursday I did 57 min. class and burn 583. Granted the class I took had different instructors but it also depends on how hard you really pushed it also. Over the weekend I did 2 different classes in on I burned over 900 in 71 minutes and the other class was 83 minutes and I burned over a 1000.

I am borring a friend's DVD set, last night, I did 35 minutes of a 55 minute class of the Cardio party. My 12yo daughter with it with me! HA! Normally, I do Zumba Wii, but dang, the DVDs are much more intense. I do not have an HRM, and I am just curious, of 35 minutes straight, no breaks, except for the breaks they give you when they are talking and you are panting, I am curious how many calories that burns? Right now, I am 5 feet 9 inches, and currently weight 185. Thanks for any information all, glad I found this group, I LOVE ZUMBA!!
