Thanks Beth! That's a great suggestion.
Actually, 2 of my instructors at the gym have offered to let me lead a song..I always said no, but I fianlly got up the courage to do it twice. The first time I felt OK--but the second time I felt like an awkward dork!! LOL!! But I will just keep trying..

After you learn a dance from the ZIN DVD that you like, ask your instructor if you could lead it in class. Starting with one dance is a great way to build confidence in your ability to be before the class.

the non-zumba-zumba was a lot of step-together, step-together...as you move to the front...then back...then to the side...oh now turn around. most of the moves were very similar to another more hip-hop dance class they have, with maybe 20% (that is generous) zumba music/moves.

i'm a little spoiled i guess...the first instructor i ever had was FANTASTIC!! and she is the one that got me hooked!! then she got pregnant and they brought in someone new. it hasn't been the same since. i just want to be in a class again that you get lost in!! so after i get certified that's what i hope people get out of the class!! a great workout and a great time doing it!!

Interesting topic!!
First of all, I'm curious what the "non-Zumba Zumba class" was like. What did they do?? What kind of music did she/he use? What kinds of steps--or were they just aerobic moves?
Yes, Zumba is supposed to be 70% Latin or International music, and the instructor can incorporate 1-2 other songs in her routine, like pop,hip-hop, rock or even country. (One of my instructors does a REAALY cute salsa routine to "Why Don't We Just Dance"!! I like it, eventhough I'm not a big country music fan). But you WEBSAM is right--there is a Zumba "formula" that they expect you to stick to, even with all the flexibility.
YES!! It's so fun to be certified and a ZIN member!! I did it in Oct and still haven't taught a full class, but it's something I did for me more than to make money. I LOVE getting the choreo DVDs and the music CDs and practicing the routines at home. Someday I hope to have the confidence to sub for my regular instructors at the gym--they've both been "grooming" me to fill in for them when they need a day off! LOL!! It's nice to have a "Zumba mentor" or two!!
I'm also going to contact our local Curves, now that the holidays are over..

I think starting with teaching at Curves would be great, especially if you're not used to teaching or being in front of a class dancing. Great idea!

Good for you! Another place you could call is any local Curves clubs. Zumba just partnered up with Curves and they are introducing a new 30 minute circuit! Members do one minute of zumba then strength train for the new minute. Curves managers are having trouble finding instructors so call around!

I agree, get certified. I feel like I discovered a wonderful secret- getting paid to excersise!! It's the best. And Zumba is a good corporation. They always have a new challenge. You can use their choreographies or make your own. I do mostly theirs and tweek it a bit, sometimes I make a whole dance up. And what helped me lose my weight was 1)Weight Watchers, 2) Zumba and 3) Personal training 2-30 minute sessions a week. The Zumba pays for the sessions so I don't feel guilty either.

I'll tell you there is a lot of non-Zumba being called Zumba. You can't stop it, but you can report it if you want to.

A TRUE Zumba class is comprised of 70% international rhythms.

Go do it! :) The training is fun and you'll love it!

Salsa is great, and I think it is easy, but here's something you should know - it's NOT easy for everybody. I have students who struggle with the pause in it. :) But it's a great challenge to teach.

I think you should get certified too. What a great opportunity too! If there is desire & demand in the neighborhood you will be getting job offers from all over.

In the mean while just enjoy the fact that you are burning calories no matter what the steps are!

Good Luck

It's the Latin music that makes it for me. I don't mind the occasional song by Usher or Black Eyed Peas, as long as most of the hour is Celia Cruz and Juanes and Daddy Yankee!

Sounds like a great idea-Zumba without Latin music is just aerobics....

Go for it. I think you should be an instructor too. I just got my certification on November 7 and I will start teaching next month. Salsa is so easy and so much fun. Go for it girl...just do it.

i absolutely LOVE Zumba! Have done it in the past, then moved and wasn't close to the gym. So got the dvd's at home and love those too...but still wanted to go to a class too. Joined a gym again and went to my first class last night and was utterly dissapointed!!! i don't think we did one step of salsa, or cumbia!! i know they tend to switch up songs, and routines...but how can they call it Zumba if there is little or no latin music or latin dancing??
i was so mad i'm strongly considering going to get certified in february and start my own classes!!
